Like many people, Cap One has had me at $500 for a long time, while I have other cards close to 20k. It's my oldest card, but I feel like it's a blotch on my report with such a low limit.

I called and asked about converting my card to one with a higher limit (The Super Duper Ultra Miles Card for Professionals has limits between $5,000 and $30,000 for example) but she didn't know anything about converting or upgrading cards. She sounded very cynical when I first suggested it, than she asked her manager (I presume) and said it wasn't possible.

I thought I read in FatWallet somewhere that you can change cards and keep your history and account number. Would someone please clarify for me if it's possible and how to do it?

Thanks!

Chad

P.S. I did do a search, coulnd't find an answer.

from whats been said in the past, Cap One seems to have 2 distinct tiers, subprime and prime cards.

the low limit cards are in their subprime segment, and if you are issued one of these $300-500 garbage cards, it will not increase to the large CLs or be converted into their prime products

yeah if you are a low limit person no dice. always will be. even if its a platinum card.

but you know i got some really good offers on this card (5700 limit yuck!) like 2.9% for life with zero fees. which is not too common lately.

Capital one seems to be very reluctant to trust any one single person with more than a few hundred dollars of their hard earned money at any one time....

You could be making a mountain out of molehill here.

Thanks SIS! That makes it much clearer to me.

Lorcha, about double the age. Other issuers don't mind giving me nice lines, so it's probably not a huge deal to have the low limit. I just wanted to find out if there were a way to increase it.

Call them again, tell them how you are planning on using the card everywhere and you need better line/apr/rewards/etc. CapOne is currently running a program where they are trying to get people to use their card daily, I've received numerous invitations for that and I am sure they will like another customer as well.

Cap One was my first credit card and it was a real mistake getting that card.
I do not know what my limit is, but I kind of made the mistake of cutting up that credit card without cancelling it first. I really shouldn't have listened to the reps advice on not cancelling the credit card. I guess the good part is my credit card is very healthy.

Well, if you actually want the card, tell them to issue you a new one, your mag stripe doesn't work anymore because you've swiped it so many times (or some other suitable BS). If the line is still active, then they will do it.

Also, why say it was a mistake? CapOne was my first as well, and thanks to them, I have real lines from other issuers. My first card happens to be one of the above mentioned subprime cards (which seems to be split into two, actual subprime vs no credit history). For awhile they wouldn't up me past $500, but recently due to their new initiative, its now $1000.

I wont say 100% no they wont do it. But I have not found a case where they have done it.

I however much would want to kill the account, I have a subprime. it was the first card that gave me credit after my mess. And the limit got bumped from like 250 to 500, to 2500, but with a 39/yr fee. The card after that, that I wish I did not open was the best buy/hsbc card. low limit, 1000, and I think its still sub prime.

my 'newest' card is a sony chase from last year, at 4k. chase seems pretty prime to me.

however the cap1 card is nearly 4 years old. the other 2 are just a year. so to drop it would be a big hit.

I did get my fee wavied for the card this year.

hsbc are trippy; they've given me junk, good cards but then closed them due to inactivity; denied me;

now i have their neiman marcus product; it is quite interesting; they are bound by the rules of NM. free same day rush payments; OTP charge my original OTP was $3000 (weak) but i got to $4500 in two months with $7000 actually charged once; they consider every purchase on a case by case basis "like AMEX". they always answer quickly no automated system ever; they call you back if you leave a message. I disputed a charge because it was never shipped (lost in warehouse) no questions; no reason for dispute; disputed charge posted same day. Better than any other credit/charge i've ever seen in service especially for a store charge. i still place them in my head like crap1 subprime but its just wierd how they operate on a totally different level with this merchant.

with crap 1 i asked the higher-up credit analyst about product conversion and was told no no never no. After about 4 years i got approved for their 20K limit no-hassle prime rate card. I don't really use it except for the intro rate period 0% no fee.

get gobs of junk mail on both cards but haven't seen my crap 1 gold card in many years. probably buried by now lol. i never did like their website and terrible customer service.

oh yeah the APR on the gold is like 18% the APR on the no-hassle is prime; they will not absolutely budge. i've asked. several times.

strange folks they must have their way. p.s. the crap 1 gold was originally one of those starter $49 deposit $500 limit secure cards for people with no credit. I got the $49 back.

Only reason i keep the card is they report limits now and its the oldest active tradeline so no point in shortening your oldest open line or average history.

the model of the company changed alot during the subprime years ; i think they got bit too hard and now focus more on the prime market.

Mine had been raised to $750 after one year (I think I had asked for a CLI - don't remember very well), and last month, at 3.5 years since I got it, it bumped to $2.5k by itself.

I contacted them for something similar and they were willing to merge two cards including balances and credit limits provided both were with the same name. They were willing to merge a company card and a personal card provided both used the same SS#. They were NOT willing to merge a personal card and a small business card even though both used the same SS#.

I started out with a Capital One high school card years ago. The initial CL was $300, which a few years later was bumped to $800 after I talked to a supervisor. Then, last year, they upgraded my card to a No Hassle card and the credit line went from $800 to $15000, even though I barely used the card on an annual basis.

So it looks like card promotion is possible, and in my case, automatic too. Oddly, they never asked me for my income, so I don't know how they decided to give me the $15000 line. Perhaps that they based it on other 5 digit lines that I have in my credit report.

The Crap One card is one of my wife's oldest cards (13 yrs) I think $1300 line forever. Recently, they have been very aggressive with offering to upgrade to the NO Hassle card. This is even with the 30 day late due to an added annual fee on a shoeboxed card. I'm going to have here call in and see what they will offer her for a line. Will update when I hear back.

Our daily use card is a Capital One prime card. I think they got it via an acquisition long ago, though I don't remember the original issuer. I believe it was a rewards card for Egghead Software.

It hasn't always been our daily use card, and while the limit of $18k is plenty, it's actually on the low side for cards we've ever put to use. And Capital One was unwilling to raise the limit when I asked this summer. I was stunned - the balances get over $10k when it's got nearly 2 (busy) months worth of use on it.

But they were happy to update the rebate program when we asked - automatically applied every month and a 25% annual bonus.
