I haven't had a phone call yet either, although I did call with some questions and exchanged e-mails. I'm still waiting for a response for a clarification of the notarization and credit inquiry issues.

Any bets as to how many applications they've received since 12/31?

Hello,

I have some questions and I asked these to the bank, but have not received a response. I am sure the FWers know answers to most of the ones below and will be helpful. Please respond.

1. Please define Point of Sale POS transactions i.e. if I pay for groceries using the card, would that qualify me for that month for the high rate (assuming the other 3 conditions are met)?
1a. The online FAQ / flash advertisement says that the PoS transactions are with the debit card (don't know whether PIN entry is required), while we FWers talk about 10 debit donations to different institutions. How does that help qualification since that technically it may not be involving the use of the debit card?
2. Do multiple PoS transactions at same / different store done on the same day get counted as one or multiple PoS transactions for that month? i.e. First transaction for onions, second for tomatoes etc in one grocery trip I DON"T intend on doing this, but sometimes nearly month-long international trips might make me do this...
3. How much is the charge to order checks?
4. I don't get any utility bill except my cell phone bill (I rent out a room of a house and the landlady gets the utility bills on her name). Would I still qualify? Should I ask the landlady for a receipt (I should be asking each month anyway...)
5. Quick Summary says that the bank requires the documents notorized. Does the bank pay for the notory fees (I don't think so)? Is there a possible work around the notorization requirement (hassle + time)?
6. Any educated guesses on:
6a. how long might the rate last
6b. what might the new rate be
7. Lastly, is there any referral bonus?

Bottomline is that for almost all the 10 transactions is the only main issue, while some might have queries about the notorized process for qualification.

No flames please. At least one of these question(s) would be applicable to at least one other FWer...

Regards,
PS: Happy New Year!

1. A "Point of Sale" (POS) transaction is generally a transaction with your debit card, either PIN-based or signature-based, made at a physical location, such as a store. You can use your debit card which has a Visa or MasterCard logo to make an on-line donation, but the on-line donation isn't a POS transaction.

2. Multiple transactions get counted as multiple transactions. (Couldn't resist saying that.) They can be on the same day, in the same store, etc.

3. I don't know how much the check fees are. Perhaps you can call and report back.

4. I've no idea if FABaT considers your cell phone bill as a utitility bill. Again, I'd call and ask.

5. You would pay the Notary fees, not the bank. I don't know yet if getting the documents notarized is really required.

6. Your educated guess is as good as mine about the how long the rate will last or if it drops, how much, etc.

7. I'm not aware of any referral bonus. Again, you should talk with a CSR.

Still no e-mail or call so I tried to call CS this morning and get a recorded message to leave phone number for call back. The last time that I called on 12/31 I was transferred right away to a rep. hmmmm. As glxpass mentioned, how many applications did they receive? or better yet how many $$$$ did people put down for initial deposit especially given that the first statement cycle is free of requirements.

Bank deals posted this early on 12/31. This thread was created at 12:35pm 12/31 and I'd applied before 2:00pm still no call. Either they are completely swamped they are rethinking allowing non-local.

Received a call a few minutes ago from the CSR who I'd spoken with and had exchanged e-mails with earlier. She told me that she had not received my on-line application yet. Fortunately, I had saved the application to a PDF file, so I e-mailed her, attaching it. She hadn't seen my most recent e-mail to her, because she is swamped. It's possible that they are so backed up, it's taking a while to get to all the online applications. OTOH, it might not be a bad idea to have your online application available as I did and see if you can fax it or e-mail it to them -- when eventually you get in touch with a CSR. Here are some other things I confirmed:

* They indeed need a copy of your driver's license that's notarized. They in the midst of deciding this on 12/31, and that's why there was some confusion about whether or not it was required.

* Same goes for the copy of the utility bill.

* They might or might not do a hard credit pull besides using ChexSystems.

The notarization and hard-pull possibility all derive from the fact that it's the first time they're offering this product to out-of-staters, and I get the impression that they're being supercautious about dealing with people that they can't see in person.

My application has been approved so now I'm waiting for the package in the mail which will include the signature card. The package will probably arrive late next week then it take another week for the bank to receive my documents and check. So then I have about 2 weeks of the first cycle grace period without having to meet requirements or I could time it so that I can have most of Feb as my first cycle. Or I could send in proof of ids and a check now before receiving the package which probably expedite the ordering of the debit card as well if common practice based on other banks is that debit card will only be ordered after receiving the initial deposit. Some banks will open the account before receiving the signature card but I don't know about this bank.

Other thing that still bothers me is the requirement of 'point of sale' debit card transactions. This is phrased differently from other reward checking accounts which only states 'debit card transactions'. According to a CSR that I talked to, online purchases would qualify but I'm sending an e-mail asking the question again since I would feel more comfortable having it in writing.

I've never heard of having a photocopy notarized. Well, the nice notary didn't bat an eyelash when I asked him to notarize SBoT's signature slip with no document attached. On the other hand that was a signature he witnessed.

I just got my phone call. One interesting thing to note - the CSR said the account has been available since the beginning of November. We need to step up our game, people! Can't let these deals go unnoticed for 2 months!

The account has been available, but I was told that they just decided to allow national availability. That's why the initial uncertainty about notarizations for people not applying in person; they're making up the rules as they go along.

Just got the phone call. Applied online on Dec 31st. Nothing new, except the CSR said they _would_ do a hard credit pull.

Blech

Dear FirstNet Checking Applicant,

Thank you for your recent application for our new FirstNet Checking Account. We regret we cannot open your account at this time due to information received from ChexSystems, Inc., a consumer reporting agency.

§ Excessive Recent Inquiries

ChexSystems did not make the decision to disapprove your account application and is unable to provide you with the specific reasons why the decision was made.

Yeah, this bugs me, too. Please post the response you receive from the bank.

The FAQ mentions something about using the debit card at an ATM and whether this counts. (It doesn't, of course.) Perhaps they're using the term "Point of Sale" to distinguish between a purchase and an ATM withdrawal. My guess is they wouldn't care if you bought something online versus something in person - the merchant fees are similar, correct?

Got the same message (Excessive Recent Inquiries)...

No call for me yet, Maybe putting $100k as initial deposit scared em off?
My denial will probably say, Excessive Rate Wh#re

Sounds like they're looking for excuses for not opening accounts. Since I've opened several deposit accounts recently, I expect I'll get the same message. Out of curiosity, for those who received this message, how did you get it? Phone call? E-mail? Letter? Thanks.

Shouldn't be. My initial deposit is more than 100K.
