This is meant to serve as a checklist if you're moving. My wife and I are moving and our current list has 40+ contacts to get in touch with. This general reminder list has served us well. If you have more suggestions, post them here. Note: List updated 3/28/08.

Don't forget...change your address with the Post Office to make sure you don't forget an old account you used to do regular business with (i.e. ING HYS). Also, make sure you have enough insurance coverage for the move as well as your new dwelling. Update your car insurance with your new work driving distances. Be sure to inquire about service deposits (i.e. power, water, etc.) that you may have paid when you moved in. Get new checks with your new address on them and set up new services (electric, gas, cable/satellite, internet, waste service) in addition to cancelling the old services. Check to make sure your cell phone works where you will be moving. Good luck!

Or you could pay $120/year for a mail rental box that forwards the mail to you, set all your statements to electronic delivery, and just get the few crucial snail mail paperwork forwarded to you once a month for a few dollars.

1) Maintains Privacy
2) Maintains same longterm address on credit file
3) BBB approves

If you have a cell phone, don't forget to check the signal at your new address. Some providers (T-Mobile and Sprint do in my experience) will let you out of your contract if you move outside their service area.

If you make the address change at the post office, a lot of these will be automatically solved.
But don't forget to tell your Nigerian friends where to find you after you move.

No it won't, that just forwards your mail for you for 6 months. After that, your mail would again be delivered to your old address.

Great post, OP, green for you~

Actually, a lot of spam (and all the free magazine subscriptions) followed my trail after I moved five months ago. A few days ago I even received a letter from USAA (I guess) telling that they were notified by USPS about my move.
Of course I updated my address with the banks and credit card companies.

1. Some, but not all, insurance companies cover your items "during transit." If they don't you might want to consider a rider or if you're using a moving company, a policy through them. Imagine hiring movers and having the truck driven off a bridge. Without looking into insurance, you may unknowingly lose everything you own.

2. I'd rather pay a few extra dollars to make sure I'm classed correctly so that there's never a dispute with the insurance company if I need to file a claim.

3. Definitely check to see if you paid deposits because some are refundable.

4. There's a time and place for checks even today. It may not be the grocery store line, but it's nice to have an automated means to generate proof of payment (i.e. scanned checks from the bank). I personally prefer my information be accurate. I might think twice about this if we didn't have an account that gave us free checks.
