I was looking into getting some insurance quotes and it turns out that they want to do a credit check to give me a quote. I was put off at that because I thought those inquiries would be hard. However, according to http://www.insurancescore.com/inquiries.aspx

"Inquiries that don’t count toward your Fair Isaac insurance score.
Your own credit report requests, credit checks made by businesses to offer you goods or services, credit checks made by insurance companies, or inquiries made by businesses with whom you already have a credit account do not count toward your Fair Isaac insurance score. Credit checks by prospective employers also do not count. These types of inquiries may appear on your credit report, but they are not included in your Fair Isaac insurance score."

So are insurance quotes soft inqs? If so you could just get a bazillion quotes for b*

Any thoughts?

I think it would be easier to use Chase ID protect, TrueCredit, or any other the others for a small fee. Are you really planning on 100+ insurance quotes to b* everything?

Also, thanks for the post though, I thought that insurance inquiries are always hard pulls, so I'll look into it myself when the time comes.

Well, there is a minimum amount of time do get all those bumps with those services(1 per day per service). This way - at least in principle - it could be done in a day with those 100+ quotes. In reality, you would combine the approaches to get b* as fast as possible.

cheers

Wow.

Those insurance quotes take forever to fill out. Make sure you use the autofill from the google toolbar or something to save some time.

Wow.

How problematic is this with big automated systems? If I get an online quote from GEICO, is that really going to give my ssn to the agent working on it after pulling my credit? Or does the system just grab my score and let a computer handle that? I would appreciate input from anyone who works for an insurance agency and prepares quotes.

Good point.

My wife and I got hard inquiries for a quote from Ameriprise. When I called to complain, they assured me that although it is a hard inquiry, it is coded as auto insurance and does not impact bankcard score.

Wow.

Not to mention the amount of spam and phone calls from insurance agents...

I am not dealing with Ameriprise. I just needed Delta partner activity (+500 miles).

alert mods

I'm bumping this up because, like the poster above, I took advantage of the Delta miles offer from Ameriprise. I am fairly new to managing credit scores, but I was under the impression that an insurance QUOTE would never generate a hard pull, for the simple reason that no credit was offered. Should I dispute the inquiry with Equifax? Please bear with me, I am a newbie .

alert mods

Same here...just got a hard on EQ...called them to dispute and they verified it is NOT coded as an insurance inquiry but rather a credit inquiry that will impact score. They refused to allow me to dispute it and insisted that I contact Ameriprise to deal with it. WTF?

alert mods

I'll contact them again tomorrow. I'll keep everyone updated as to what happens.

Well? What happened?

alert mods

People with good credit are safer drivers and lower insurance risks. Fact.

alert mods

Well, A. maintains that they performed a pull with 'the insurance quote flag' so it would not show up as a hard inqury, therefore says it's a credit bureau error. I sent a dispute letter to the credit bureau, we'll see.
As to the credit/risk correlation, I am one of those insanely peculiar people who firmly believe that the correlation is made to maximise profit margins for the insurance cos, not to be 'fair' - which brings us higher insurance with points on your license, etc. So you see, I have a fundamental issue with how the auto insurance system works in general, but that is intensely OT.

alert mods

Well! I just wanted to give everyone an update: I sent a dispute letter (form thing from myFICO.com, nothing fancy) to the CB and as of yesterday, the inquiry vanished. I guess I can count that as a success?
