- I don’t plan on requesting BTs during the application stage. Will wait until cards come in and reallocate where I can to save on fees.
- Planning on keeping utilization <70% on any one personal card and <50% overall.
- I'm including a good mix of business cards and will be reallocating to them whenever possible. Not too worried about utilization on those.

Suggestions on cards to add/remove/replace?
I have the Citi Professional card listed even though I already have one. Will that be a problem? answer: YES

update 1/31: Considering National City Visa Business for a large credit line – 0%, 6 months (maybe 12), ??? fee? (site did not let me apply)
update 1/31: Changed link to Citi Business PremierPass to $0 fee BT card (thanks Rorer714!)
update 2/5: Submitted applications. Results updated.
update 2/8: Chase Disney & Chase Freedom approved. Requested online CLI to $12k on both cards and granted.
update 2/11: Received email approval for Citi PremierPass Elite.
update 2/10: Received email from Cardbenefit.com notifying me (3) AMEX cards approved and $165 will be credited to me.
update 2/12: Reformatted post for eligibility
update 2/13: Recieved Wells Fargo card in mail. Citi Pro and Citi AMEX Plat denials.
update 2/14: US Bank card came in the mail. Citi Business PremierPass email approval (no CL given).
update 2/20: All app decisions in.
Further updates will be done in posts.

I dont know the status of that $6k balance on Advanta, but it may be worth considering payign it off and closing the account, so you can add a new Advanta 15-month offer.

I would highly recommend requesting large BT's on the application (especially with National City). I would do it as much as possible. You can almost always call the issuer soon after approval, tell them to cancel the BT request after you get the large line, and then just ask for checks to be mailed. I have seen much larger lines on average with most companies when requesting large BTs.

Also, I'd add the national city business card. It typically gives large CL's (20-35k) and despite saying 6 mo promo with no fees, mine is somehow extended for 12 months. Make sure to request a large bt.

One warning, they will fax/mail you a page you must sign and fax back to them before getting approved. A little bit of a pain, but worth it for the lines they give.

I did consider that but it would make things a bit tight moneywise. I forgot to mention it's at 2.9% so I wouldn't be losing too much.

I was afraid if I'd request a 20k transfer they'd do it but with a 20k CL. Good to know you can cancel it and redo it. I think I read someone saying 20k is the most they'll transfer at once so I'll give that a shot. Thanks.

I respectfully disagree. This may cause a logistical nightmare and there are no guarentees that the line will be any bigger.

I've done 6 AOR's, as well as been personally involved in about 4 more. From first hand experience, I've seen major differences (with similar vital stats) between asking for large BT's on the app and not asking. I'm not saying you can't be very successful without asking by any means, but any issuer that allows you to call up after being approved and ask for a CLI will have a higher tendancy to give you a higher line if you've requested a BT on the app.

With national city, I know someone who worked there and have used the BT request to get many higher lines. For example, my first card I was approved for 10k line, I called and asked for a CLI, they said "do you want to do a BT?" I said yes, for $25,000. They gave me a $30k credit line. They explictly said that they can give higher lines if you are doing a BT. I think the reps even get a bonus for doing it.

Just use Excel to keep track, be methodical with your progress. If you have a HELCO you can BT to (16 digit card), that is the perfect situation.

For their business card, I'd recommed requesting $35k.

I was also concerend about "asking from 25 BT and getting 25 line" problem, so I asked for $22,100 BTs on many cards, and ended up getting $23,000 credit lines. I think this is evidence in and of itself that requesting them does help higher limits.

However, one note of concern, is that while you have execelent credit, and a good credit base, your HHI will likely not allow you to get the mega sized new lines. I've seen most of the lines above $20k go to those with HHI of $200k plus. Regardless, don't let that stop you from trying!

Good luck.

I will agree with you that while profit maximization is obviously the main goal, you do need to keep things within your own level of orgainzation. One mistake (ex: writing a AMEX check to yourself) can slam you with hundreds or a thousand $ of finance fees. Make sure you don't get overwhelmed. If organization isn't a problem, and you don't mind spending time on the phone cancelling, then I'd recommend asking for BTs.

You can just let the BT's go through, rather than cancelling, but that actually tends to take longer sometimes than requesting the check. Furthermore, many times the receiving card will put a long hold on your transfer if you don't have a balance on the card, which is not a good tiem when you lose 2 months of potential interest.

Good find. Thanks!

You might want this one, 0% 12mo NBTF.

Citi Drivers Edge

Right now I have 2 personal, 2 business, and a professional card listed for Citi. I don't think I can add another. I ended up putting the Citi Platinum AMEX on there instead of that one since the 15k thank you points would be guaranteed while I haven't seen others get really high lines on the Drivers Edge to make it a better option. Thanks though.

Pulled the trigger on the applications this morning. Started out great with 2 nice instant approvals but pretty much everything else was deferred.

Only instant denial was from Discover Business (no reason given yet). Penfed went from "deferred" to "denied." Reason given was "insufficient income for credit line request." I had asked for $25k on the app since I would assume they would just give me a lesser line if they thought that was too much. Should have probably asked for $15k. I might call them to reconsider depending on how the rest of the results go.

I'll keep updating the original post as results come in.

Exact same thing happened to me, asked for $24k, same response. I communicated back and forth regarding my HHI, but they eventually denied me just the same. I don't know what their deal is with their "guess what CL I'm thinking" game, but I don't like it.

Good to know, thanks. I'm sure I read your 2.0 thread a couple times through since our HHI are not far off and I shouldn't made a note of that. Maybe I'll just leave this one alone. I wasn't impressed with the customer service in their mortgage dept. last year so I probably shouldn't expect much better here.

I had 80,000 HHI listed when I applied for that Penfed card and was approved for the 25k limit.

Both Discover apps denied. I called regarding what the reason was. (in case this helps anyone)

Discover personal rep simply said they were not willing to extend me more credit because of the $12k line I currently have on a card. She said it doesn't help that my utilization is >50% on it. (this is a 0% for life card)

Discover business intially declined me based on the fact I have no business profile so they went off my personal profile with Discover. After telling them a bit about my business, they will now resubmit my app with new info and will get a new response in 7-10 days.

No go with Discover business. Denied again after they said they would reconsider. Curious to see what reason the denial letter gives.

2 new accounts showed up in my Yodlee account this morning. Chase Disney and Chase Freedom both with lines of $9,400. They were both near the bottom of my list so I'm a little surprised (pleasantly) they gave me those lines.

update: requested online CLI on both cards. Approved! Both cards are now at $12,000.

1 reason to build biz credit!

if you are applying for biz cards now you really need biz credit, days of easy credit are gone.

I reformatted the original post for legibility.
A big pile of mail came yesterday. It's like Christmas!

AMEX Starwood - $6,200
AMEX Plat Bus FreedomPass - $3,000
Chase Disney - $9,400 (CLI increased to $12,000 couple days ago)
Chase Freedom - $9,400 (CLI increased to $12,000 couple days ago)

Denial letters:
Discover Business (already knew)
Discover More (already knew)
Chase (could be either of the United Miles cards or the Business card, doesn't say)
RBS (they could not verify information; I'll call them today)

I'm really tempted on trying for CLI on the 2 new AMEX cards but I don't want to be greedy. I now have $48,400 in available credit with them. Does it up my chances of a FR with them if I have so much available credit?

dvm395 said: RBS (they could not verify information; I'll call them today)
Uh oh, that happened with me a year or two ago. Be ready to spend some quality time with your fax machine and on the phone. But I got the card eventually.

Financial Review is a very personal subject. There are three common approaches:

1) Avoid it. Don't use the CLI, and proceed gingerly (or not at all) with BTs.
2) Survive it. Do whatever you want, but make sure your verifiable income (tax form) matches what you said when you applied. (My personal choice)
3) Fail it. Max out everything, take the money, and run. And don't worry about the closed accounts.

2. That's what I'm leaning towards right now. I was honest on the apps so I probably shouldn't worry. The way some people talk about it here, the Financial Review sounds like Michael Vick's dog is going to come after you.

It all depends, if you didn't fudge then go for the max. Some fudge, some don't. I like choice #3, after you pay them back you will be their friend again. Not worth it on personal cards, it will hurt your score to much.

The last AMEX card (in:LA) arrives in the mail as well as a Wells Fargo card with a $9k line. 2 denial letters from Citi for the Professional card and AMEX Platinum cards. Both letters state I already applied for the max amount of Citi cards.

I plan on activating the AMEX cards today, requesting CLIs, reallocating most to the In:LA card, and calling to request a BT check sent out to me. I know I can't make it payable to myself, but I believe I can have it made out to my wife to be deposited into an individual account she has, correct?

Wells Fargo included a BT check so I'll deposit $6200 into my WAMU Savings for now until I open a Countrywide account as well as maybe a Salem Five Direct account.

It's highly desirable that the person you write the check to has a different last name. If your wife does not meet this criterion, reach out to inlaws or use a reliable friend.

Thanks, inlaws would work fine too. I guess it's better be safe.

Wait, didn't you apply for 2 personal / 2 business / 1 professional card? That's the traditional "max", so I would expect denials for other reasons.

Were these instant denials after which you got the letter? Had you applied for citibank cards in the last few months? Did the letters of declination say anything about too many cards in a certain period (60/90 days, etc)?

Both were initially deferred. Haven't applied for any Citi cards for about 2 years. Yes, I do believe it said within 60 days but I'll check when I get home.

I already have a Professional card from them so I wasn't sure I would get approved for another but the reason given was definitely too many applications submitted.

update:
Citi Professional denial: "Already have maximum number of accounts allowed" or something like that (already have a Pro card with them)
Citi AMEX Plat denial: "Too many applications submitted in last 60 days"

At my credit union, I can make the check out to the CU and they then deposit it in my account. Would something like this work with AMEX?

I remember reading that if the account is associated with your name in any way, AMEX will treat it as a cash advance. With most other issuers, it is ok to do.

Called RBS because they were "unable to verify information." Turns out they just wanted to know how many months exactly that I've been at my address since I put down 1 year on the app. That's all they needed and said they'd have a decision within 7 days. Finally got around to activating all the cards in my posession so far.

Called BofA and like others have said, they are pushing balance transfers hard! I first asked for a CLI on the NEA card. 2 minutes later my line was at $17,000 (from 10.7k). I moved $2,000 from the other BofA card I was approved for and ended up doing a direct deposit to checking for $17,000 (89% util). It goes against my original plan of keeping a personal card under 70% but they just made it too easy.

Spoke to Wells Fargo CSR and had them DD $6,200 (69% util) into checking.

Asks for online CL increases on the AMEX cards (didn't go too crazy) and received the "7-10 day" response. Will wait for a response before doing some reallocation and a monster balance transfer.

It seems the monster BTs are what you need to becareful of, with AMEX. Good Luck!

Thanks Brian. Yeah, I sort of borrowed from yours. Too bad the new GUI makes it look worse again.

UPDATES:
Been a bit too busy to post but I updated the original post. Received decisions on all but 2 cards so far.

- So far, almost $120k in new credit with CL of 4 approvals still not known. Very happy with the results at this point.

- Today I reallocated all AMEX credit lines to the In:LA card which gives me a CL of $45,400 on that card. Called AMEX to have them send me BT checks. They specifically said it can be made out to anyone as long as the account it's being deposited in has no relationship to me. I will be writing it out to my bro-in-law just to be safe. Plan on going to 69% utilization here.

- Called National City and they will be sending a check payable to me for $6,900 (69% util).

- Called Chase to see what was up with the rest of my apps. Both business cards were approved with lines of $11k. United Miles personal was considered a duplicate app (she said I applied for 1 too many Chase personal) so it was not considered. Will wait to receive the cards and then do some reallocating.

- Yesterday, Wells Fargo called to verify I intended on having $6,200 go into my checking account. All is now good.

Final application results:

- Opened a Fidelity account with $10k after registering for both the United Miles and $100 bonuses. Not sure whether I need to deposit an additional $10k to get both bonuses.

- 25k TYP showed up today. I made the required $500 purchase on the Citi PP Elite card just 2 days ago! That was quick.

- Sent in a check to Salem Five Direct to open an account there. Will open a Countrywide savings account today.

- Not very happy with National City so far. I asked them to mail me a BT check for $6.9k a couple days ago. They said it would take 7-10 days to arrive. Noticed this morning that the amount is already reporting through Experian and dinged my score 50+ pts! Other than the $500 on the Citi PP Elite card, that is the only balance reporting so far. Didn't expect such a big drop.

The RBS is a personal card though.

I was in businesses mode, don't matter i'd just put everything I could on it. Cable, garbage, food, gas, medicine etc., My insurance company has even started taking credit cards with no fee.
