I'm trying to enroll my AMEX Blue Cash account in the direct debit payment program (automatically pay my balance every month). I'm trying to use my Fidelity mySmart Cash Account with check writing privilages. I recieved a letter back from AMEX saying that money market accounts are not allowed, however, this account is a Brokerage account with check writing privilages.

For the account number, I used the method on Fidelity's website (399000005 + Account Number), which has worked for every other bill I have. Has anyone had any luck getting this to work? My next step would be use the account number written on my Smart Cash checks (771 + account number).

You should go back in time and wait on posting this topic until you find out the answer to your Plan B.

I had some similar difficulty enrolling my own Blue Cash account for the AMEX "direct debit" program using an HSBC Online Payment Account. Since the HSBC OPA has no checks at all, I tried just sending in the enrollment form with the routing number, account number, and a brief explanation.

No dice. They mailed me a new application form and a letter indicating that a voided check was required. I'm not sure why their policy is so rigid in this area -- I've made similar EFT arrangements in the past without providing voided checks.

Ultimately, I worked things out by emailing AMEX customer service. A representative wrote back indicating that if I faxed him a letter on HSBC letterhead indicating the routing number, account number, and my ownership of the account, that would be sufficient to process the original "direct debit" enrollment application already on file. I did so, and it was set up in short order.

I would imagine you should be able to get something similar from Fidelity and go from there.
