Credit Fraud w/Physical Card Archived From: Finance

I'm sure lots of people at one point have experienced credit fraud--I have at least 4 times over the past 10 years. Maybe someone has an idea of how it works.

I called Chase about a $560.00 charge on a visa for Giant Food in MD (I'm in Philly) and was told that there were a few attempted charges with the card in the space of two days. The Giant one went through and they said the card was present. But I still have the card in my wallet.

Does this mean the person/people made a copy with one of those copying devices? Also, I think it had to be the parking garage where I parked my car the day before, because all the other charges were places like Target and grocery stores and online payments.

Has anyone ever really found out HOW their card or info was taken?

anywhere you use the card can be potential places where your card info was taken

all it takes is 1 swipe

The only time my card is not in my possession and is not visible to me is when I eat out at restaurants. That's a good way to make an illegal swipe or some kind of process they can use to make a copy.

Why are you sure that we have experienced this???

Speaking only for myself, I have never had any CC fraud..... this is after VA lost my records, multiple banks I deal with have lost CC records, and laptops with my info have been 'lost'....

There's a story I saw on TV about somebody installing some sort of "card scanner" right next to a gas pump's card swipe slot and didn't get detected for several days. It might be something similar to that.

Taking grumpy pills today?? 4 years ago my elderly parents had someone get the #. Yes they do scan the bar (it's like audio tape that head reads when swiped). Then they take a blank card, write to it and done.

Likely the buys on it are from places like certain auto pay supermarkets (wal mart) and gas where no clerk is present to check the card's embossed #'s

1st thing on monday is file a report with the cops for theft. Then deal with the company. Keep telling yourself that someone sole money from you. The card co will move much faster that a cop is evolved (CC companies rather you PAY for monitoring what a scam). In our area most people know others and the cops have little to do with crime so they have time for these things. Good luck.

You get that free 1 a year - stager the 3 companies not all at once.

Lastly, set up an online account if you haven't you can set alerts to send email to your cell phone or computer when a limit is reached or alert you that it's in use.

I would check with the CC company to determine what exactly they mean then they say "card present". Sometimes this means the person simply entered in the 3 or 4 digit cvcc like you do with some online purchases. They can usually tell whether the card was entered in manually or whether it was a swipe.
