I know...but it just seemed like a bit of a strange statement since we know what the history has been with them regarding rates...
As far as his actual question...he really should check with them to find out why that is with his particular account, either by calling or e-mailing during regular business hours...
I can't figure why his limit would be dropped...i don't think the small balance would have changed that...so he would really need to find out what his particular situation is...

Did Alliant quit making direct deposit available a day early? My paycheck has always been visible and available on Thursday but it isn't showing up today.

Grobe said:   Anyone notice a dramatic decline in their transfer limit? I have been a member there for a few years. At first it was $10,000 a day. Then they increased it to $25,000. But for the last couple years I have only had $100 or so in a savings account (after they dramatically cut their interest rates). Today I tried a significant transfer into Alliant (I was planning to transfer it out in a few days), and they said my transfer limit was $1,000.

When did they change their policy?

Don't want to be seen as turning a molehill into a mountain. I support Alliant and have my money there. But these are very tough and trying times for both financial institutions and savers. Alliant has an objective it must place at least as high as its desire to serve members well. That objective is: self preservation.

So I hope readers here will continue to post instances of backsliding, whether real or perceived. Sometimes we cannot see clearly a larger picture until sufficient pieces of the mosaic are in place.

I just noticed that I now modify joint owners to account online -- used to have to sent in a form. Just went to the "options" tab for an account and there is now a link for "manage joint owners."

You used to be able to access your direct deposit before it was actually deposited??

I can usually see mine a day in advance, but I've never been able to access it before the deposit date.

I never tried accessing it on Thursday but it show available in my balance. This week it wasn't even visible until about 9am central time. That is why I was wondering.

I have 2 coming in for February...(my first DD of my pension check to Alliant instead of BOA as it was before and also my first Social Security check in about 2 weeks)...
I'll post back when each one comes in and let you know my experience...though i suspect it will be the same as others have mentioned...

edit: yes...worked the same for me as it does for everyone else...my pension check shows in the "pending" column today (1 day early) but it isn't actually available today...as it is not reflected yet in the available balance...so looks like it is the same for everyone when it comes to direct deposits...tuesday it will post and then it will actually be available for use...

I have the Schwab 2% Visa, fwiw.

Anyone know if Citi will flag an opening deposit to Alliant as a cash advance?

It most definitely hit as a cash advance.

Stupid me, I searched this thread twice and I didn't see that someone else had it coded as a CA as well.

Did I miss the advance rate announcement for February? Looks like they're staying the same.

I don't think anyone asked. I guess anything sub-1% is largely uninteresting to the masses.

Agreed. I actually did call and inquire. Have been so busy I forgot to post that rates are unchanged for February. But with rates this abysmally low, it makes scant difference and is of very, very little help.

I guess in these horrid times any rate>0% is a decent rate.

I have two checking accounts, at Alliant and PNC. Alliant pays 0.95%, while PNC pays 0.01%. On an average balance of a bit over $2K, Alliant is paying me almost $20 per year more than PNC would. So, it passes the Chipotle test almost three times over.

I was unaware of the annual timeframe for the burrito test. This would have made even PNC's old $0.05/debit transaction windfall pass.

chase screwed me over today.... I had recently opened up a new savings account so that I could deposit my cash and transfer them to my alliant account but they "forgot" to tell me that the account was NOT approved even though I received an email that it was. I had initiated two ach transfers from chase to alliant and was charged TWO return of deposit fees... do you think I can get these reversed?

*update* I contacted Alliant and they graciously reversed those two fees =D I LOVE this credit union!

Alliant rocks but, OK, you have an "I need to be able to deposit cash securely" situation.

What I do in your situation is quite similar to what you did. The only exception: I use as small a bank as I can find. I deposit the cash then suck it out (via ACH) of the local bank using my Alliant hub account. There is never any fee and the money is in my Alliant account the next day.

Really, the only thought I can offer is: Don't use a big money center bank at your end. They, all of them, are poison. [JMHO, of course! ]

i['ve been doing it for a while now. never had any problems and get instant access to my money. i also deposit cash in another credit union account and don't have any problems there either.

Is Alliant a co-op member? If they are, all you need to do is go to any other local co-op member to make a deposit.

Has anyone experienced any recent anomalies with Alliant's bill pay service? My payments to my Chase credit card accounts have always, without fail, been posted to my account the afternoon the electronic payments were sent out by Alliant's bill pay provider (i.e. the day after the funds are withdrawn from my Alliant account). Oddly, I had a payment that was withdrawn from my account on Thursday night, and the payment was not posted to my account Friday afternoon as expected. And still nothing today. It hasn't actually been that much time yet (this being only the second business day after the payment was processed), but I've found it somewhat odd as this is contrary to my past experiences with Alliant's bill pay and Chase.

Please be so kind as to keep us updated. This is important and critical stuff. If you read some of the above posts there are scattered reports that something might be happening at Alliant. I don't know what or even if. So please keep us in the loop. People care about such things as this, i.e., the timing of money movement.

I just had this happen with a payment to Chase. Payment requested for 2/2/12 and posted by Chase on 2/6/12. I expected it to be posted on 2/3/12 as it has been in the past (next day). All other recent payments to other companies have been posted as usual.

A couple months ago some people were reporting that they were getting $5000 immediate availability from edp deposits, vs. the previous $2,500. Maybe it varies by customer or other factors, but here is another data point, from two edp deposits I made into savings today (Sat 2-11-12): a $15k check immediately followed by a $5,000 check.

For one check (presumably the larger one) $10k is under a hold that expires Mon 2-20 (which is a holiday); and for the other check $2500 is under a hold that expires Mon 2-13.

Hard to tell for sure what the edp hold rules are from this. Maybe for the first check deposited in a day $5000 is available immediately and the rest in 9 days. While for subsequent checks deposited the same day, something similar to the old rule still applies: $2500 now, $2500 more in 2 days, and the rest in another 7 days. The reason for the "something similar to" fudge is that the old rule was $2500 now, another $2500 in 2 business days, and the remainder in 5 more business days -- so the day counts aren't exactly the same.

I have been using presidential for deposits and bill payments. Lately, their interest rates are low compared to other banks. Also opened an account with Capital One for emergency savings.

Do you guys suggest consolidate these two accounts and use alliant instead? Also probably move HSA from wageworks(as they started charging 5.95 monthly fee).

Edit: Any account opening benefits currently going on?

rated:

Alliant doesn't really have specials or bonuses because their rates are so consistent and attractive that it isn't necessary to attract lots of members...and they have LOTS of members...i think they are about the 7th largest CU in the entire country....lol...

If you want top rates and consistently high rates, Alliant is hard to beat...

rated:

Actually alliant was having a $100 bonus when I opened in late 2010...I didn't even know there was a promotion going on when I signed up.

Is Alliant still charging a fee after the first 8 ATM transactions? I was all ready to sign up, but the signup page for Foster Care to Success says: Alliant charges a nominal fee after eight transactions have been performed in a month at non-Alliant ATMs, including CO-OP Network, Credit Union 24 CU Here, Bank of the West, Allpoint and Alliance One ATMs.

Transfers to my Charles Schwab account are quick and easy and keep my interest rates high.

Go ahead and get your Alliant accounts...the fee was dropped about a year ago...it's unlimited now...unlimited balance inquiries, transfers and withdrawals at the atm machines....
And of course, alliant charges no atm fees on their end and whenever you use any of the surcharge free networks (the one's you listed) no fee on that end either

They probably just forgot to update that page when the last revised fee schedule came out early last year...

How user friendly is Alliant's online bill pay? BofA has a great online bill pay but I no longer use it as my regular checking acct. Switched to Cap One awhile ago, but HATE their online bill pay. How does Alliant's compare to say BofA, Ally, or ING?

Thanks!

rated:

Alliant's billpay is function but not the greatest, I think. It works more than well enough for me (send payment on this date functionality) but it doesn't have the fine-grained control that I hear the others have.

rated:

The bill pay is limited but i believe they are looking at adding some features.
