Alliant is a very large credit union and I know they will do everything possible to keep our interest rates where they are presently. But the headwinds right now are especially strong. We shall know this outcome in the fullness of (not very much) time.
At the point where they're paying .95%/.90%, does it really matter? I think most of us are with Alliant for their fast transfers, good bill pay, large ATM network, convenient remote deposit options, great customer service, and history of market-leading rates. The fact is that no one is paying high rates right now, so whether it's .95% or .75% doesn't make much of a difference to my bottom line. The time to watch will be when rates start to rise again. Then we'll need to see how quickly Alliant keeps pace and whether their rates continue to lead the pack.

I share your consternation regarding low interest rates in general. And I agree with your observations regarding the very positive and helpful features and services attendant to being an Alliant member.
That said, I'm sure you can realize it's a large and varied group here. So while a still lower Alliant interest rate might not be pivotal to some, it could impact others differently.
Also, and importantly, if Alliant is able to hold the current interest rate in June, given what I am seeing elsewhere, it will be another huge feather in Alliant's cap. We will know soon. It won't be very long.
For me, recently, customer service and fees have trumped rates. Alliant is among the best, if not the best, on these counts. When I needed a cashiers check for closing, it took me longer to get to a branch (~10 minutes) than to get the check once I was in the parking lot (~2 mins from my car to the counter and back). Most commercial banks charge $5 or more for the instrument...at Alliant its free of charge. And I also got a phone call the next day when that was deposited to make sure I hadnt lost it or it wasnt cashed fraudulently. Which other bank goes that far for its customers?
The one beef I have is that (most of) their branches are accessible only to United employees. Even though they have a branch in Sears tower, its not accessible to anyone else that also works in Sears tower but doesnt work for United.
tjguitar85 said: anyone know if we can get foreign currency at one of Alliant's co-op credit unions?
Just out of curiosity, why would you need to do that? These days the best thing to do is to hit an ATM once you arrive in the country. I just used my Alliant convenience card (ATM card) in India. Worked like a champ.
Anyone noticed the new version of eDeposit+ that Alliant has recently installed ???? What a steaming pile of poop.
Issues:
They added a batch interface (so you can scan multiple checks "easier"), but it forces you to add up the total amount of all checks you want to deposit in that batch at the start. Did I time-warp back to 1992 ?
The new interface is totally confusing. For most of the process you click Next to go to the next screen. However there is a "validation screen" buried in the wizard, and on that screen you have to change things and then click Update (not Next). Clicking Next appears to do nothing, and if you click it twice you lose your validations.
No longer gives a printout of the check on the "deposit receipt"
You can enter a description, but it is for the entire batch (not each individual check). And as a bonus, the description doesn't even end up on the posted transaction (just on the receipt if you choose to print it).
Whoever does UX (User Experience) design for this app at Ensenta (the actual developer) needs to be taken out behind the shed and shot.....
They took a very simple process in the last version and made a big hot mess out of it.

I haven't noticed.. I haven't used the desktop product since the iPhone/Android apps came out.

Can you deposite checks via iphone? i dont see this option at least for the savings account.
Ken over at depositaccounts.com is reporting that as of June 1, Alliant's rates will be cut to 0.80% for savings and 0.75% for high yield checking. I wonder what this will mean for their CD rates, which have not changed since January of this year.

I'm still completely happy with Alliant's service, website, and overall features/value for my money but it's still disappointing to watch rates drop so frequently after how stable they were last year.

Thanks and green. Very much appreciate your heads up.
As I posted earlier, I anticipated a reduction for June. To be frank, though, I did not see coming a rate reduction of this magnitude. Things (in general and not at Alliant in particular) appear to be going from very bad to even worse.

This was...2 weeks ago? 3 weeks ago?
If I want to open a checking account with them, will they do an additional hard pull? They do a hard pull when you join, not for each account. I got a hard pull when I applied for Alliant's checking acct several months (if not years) after I joined. As I recall, their policy was that no additional hard inquiry was necessary if they had pulled your credit within the past 30 days. However, I've found Alliant's secure messaging system to be quick and fairly reliable, so I'd suggest sending them a secure email inquiring about their current policy.
Alliant has little choice but to lower them, given the continuing low interest rate environment. It is still one of the highest yielding savings accounts without fees and without required opening or minimum balances.

Ok. They did not do a hard pull when I opened my checking account. I called and opened over the phone so I could ask.
I've been an Alliant member for maybe 4 years. I got a hard pull recently (Equifax, I think? Not sure without checking) for starting a VISA with them, but that's to be expected since it is credit. Aside from when I first joined, I don't recall getting a hard pull form them for starting deposit accounts.
Argh...the new eDeposit+ is garbage. GARBAGE. I got a check in the mail this afternoon and try to deposit it online, stupid website tells me I've deposited it previously. I dont know what its doing to validate, but how does a product ship with such a huge bug?
It worked for me as well, but it seems way slower than the old version. Also, the first time I tried the CSS didn't load on the page you submit at so I had to guess at the button and ended up clicking the cancel button so I had to start all over .

I agree. It keeps telling me all the Staples rebate checks are "too short". LOL

Good thing I got an android phone so I didn't have to experience this mess, didn't have any problems depositing two $350 Staples checks a couple of weeks ago with the phone.

I dont think my deposit had anything to do with image size. My scanner worked fine in the past without issues on the previous version of eD+. The check looked good on the scanned images. I was able to read off the MICR numbers at the bottom that banks care about.
I called their CSR and the rep said the limit for eD+ is 1500 and my check was over that amount. So I went back and looked at my eD+ history and I noticed that I was successful in depositing a check that was over 2k late last year. So thats not it. I tried the new iPhone app and it is "pending administrative review". Now I'm stuck until Tuesday.
I had no luck getting the Android App to process my $350 dollar Staples checks for Alliant, it has had no trouble with more regular formatted checks however. Apparently is it YMMV.

Huh - I've had no issues so far with checks of all sizes depositing thru the Android app.
One suggestion... place the check on a dark table (I use a wood coffee table) and ensure nothing except the check is visible in the camera's field of view, hold the phone very steady, then take the photo. Works every time.
Ken is writing there about quick ACH transfers. Alliant is mentioned in the comments which follow.
There is also a post down below which is highly critical of Alliant. The poster reveals he isn't even certain of the two hour time difference between Chicago and the west coast. I found that poster's views quite humorous.

Yup. After the train wreck of this morning's employment report, and given the ongoing calamity in Europe, I'd not be shocked to see our Alliant rates go even lower. Things are not great.
FYI - TIAA-CREF MM is still paying 1.25% (although who knows for how long). I like Alliant and will probably never close my account, but I moved most of my Alliant cash there.
Short term (12-23 mths) CD rates have also dropped from 1.00% to 0.85%. It's actually shocking to see that Ally now has higher rates on savings and CDs than Alliant, although I would not be surprised to see a rate drop there in time as well.
Question for folks here...kind of an odd one. I can't remember, but does Alliant's system normally ACH out an automated, matching credit and debit when it checks the routing and account numbers for an account at another bank or CU?
In other words, if on Alliant's website I click on the "Transfer Money" tab, then the "Manage Transfer Accounts" link, then the "Add New Account" button, then fill in the info. for my other account - does their automated system send BOTH a debit and credit that exactly match, which is the model that many banks and CUs use? It seems to me that Alliant used to do that, but today I had a situation where the "target" bank apparently received just Alliant's debit but no credit. Curious.
I called Alliant, but they said basically "that Department is too busy to take phone calls right now", so I had to leave my number for callback tomorrow - so of course that drove me to a whole new level of paranoia.

I think so, but I'm not 100% sure. It's been a few months since I linked to anything from the Alliant side of things.

Yes, they did both at least ~6 months (not sure exact timeframe) ago when I set mine up. I actually had the opposite situation for one account where I got a credit but the debit didn't go through because (unknown to me at the time) the linked account didn't allow ACH withdrawals. IIRC Alliant didn't officially seem to know what to do about it but I had one rep tell me not to worry about it.
