I've been lookin around online for a joint banking account to open with my son. Does anyone have any suggestions? (interest rates/sign up bonuses aren't needed, but they sure do help :-D)

Do you want an online bank or an accoount that you can access online? If the later then just goto your favorite bank and open a custodial account.

you can search for custodial acct here...
I was able to open up a bank acct with ingdirect with my 6 month old as the primary and me the secondary.
I want to open an online checkings account (Similar to ING Direct's Orange Electric) The problem with ING Direct is that they will not let me and my son sign up because he is only 16 and not 18.

Example - BofA will allow a minor to open a standard MyAccess checking account (the ones with $100 bonus), but it has to be done in-branch... Online applicants must be 18. I'm sure Ing will open an account for him (esp if you are listed as custodian) if you call.
But being 16, I'd think it'd be best for him to open an account at a bank with a local branch, so that he can easily make deposits and be introduced to the banking system face-to-face, and then an online HYSA to accumulate any savings.

Interesting... I was able to open one up at INGDirect for my daughter when she was 6 months old but it was a savings account and CD, not a checking acct.

This is quite opposite to my experience.
ING took over Netbank and they closed all my custodial accounts & CDs.
Reason given: "ING does not support custodial accounts"
I am still looking to open custodial a/cs with another online bank.
How much will you keep in it?
If it is a minor's account, my guess will be that there will nto be much in it.
If that is true, 5% or 1% interest will not make much of a difference.
