Query: Upgrade My WaMu Platinum Card?

Has anyone else received a (probably targeted) letter saying that WAMU has upgraded their Platinum MasterCard?

The letter I got says I have my choice of a lower rate thru August on purchases made thru May, or 1% Cash Back on new purchases (which will be paid at the end of the anniversary year).

Nothing in the letter says or implies that they will replace my card with an upgraded one, and it wouldn't matter much if they did because the card is less than 18 months old.

What makes me nervous (OK, paranoid) is the statement that I have to "enroll" in the program by calling a certain phone number. I reviewed other upgrade threads here and found that other banks require calling for these upgrades, so that's OK. I'd like to know if anyone has enrolled in the WAMU upgrade and if there are any downsides?

I just threw the letter away. They should come up with better idea to trick me into using their card.

My 'upgrade' comes in the form of a new BT offer every 3 months. It's for 1.99%, but of course there is an uncapped fee with it so I just throw it away. I agree they need to come up with something better.

I have what seems to be a permanent 1.99% offer for around 8 months, but with 5% BT fee ($150 cap). Perhaps I'll use them one of these days, if the offer persists.

As far as the "upgrade", I remember getting that (and stating that I had to use my other WAMU card or it would be cancelled), and after I did use it for a large BT and paid it off completely a short while later, they reduced my CL to under $500. Gee thanks

I believe the offer is for a straight 1% back on all purchases, indefinitely. Well worth the phone call or log in, even though it hardly gets used. No downsides.

I too get hounded with their we've just upgraded your account! bullpucky. They're always a day late and a couple of percentage points short, forever trailing in the footsteps of better offers I've just taken advantage of. Last year it was Wow! For three whole months we'll let you get 3% on groceries . . . after being approved for a Chase Freedom card with this benefit built-in DUH.

I'm just waiting for the WAIT WAIT! For two weeks we'll condescend to let you earn 5% on groceries . . . now that I have an Associated Bank card with a 5% Grocery rebate feature built-in. I won't even waste the ASCII on their BT transfer offers with unlimited fees. Their vanity is staggering.

There is one and only one reason why I even keep my otherwise-worthless WAMU card: BUYSMART
Ah the luxury of 20% off Target, Home Depot and Lowes giftcards. I do a brisk business trading these little guys, as my Private Trading partners know . . .

Does not seem like a good deal to me. There are still 0%, with smaller BT fee offers around.

Got my new "upgraded" WAMU Platinum Protect card today. I was notified last week my existing card was being "upgraded", I didn't request it. Same number as my current card.

Better sit down before I go through the upgrades.... Are you ready?

Lost luggage reimbursement up to $3K.

OK, you can relax now. That's it. Please try to maintain your composure.

The full list of benefits includes what you'd expect from a platinum card but nothing more...
- travel/emergency assistance
- extended warranty up to 1 year
- car rental collision damage waiver (secondary coverage)
- purchase protection against theft (but not from vehicles), or protection against damage due to fire, vandalism, "accidentally discharged water or certain weather conditions". Coverage up to $500/claim.
- travel accident insurance up to $500K
- and the aforementioned lost luggage reimbursement

Still includes FICO scores.
