First, in defense of this post.. I thought this to be the correct forum because some people may think they need to go a tax preparer and pay to have their taxes done to get a stimulus check. That said... Please don't shoot the messenger... and if this is in the wrong forum please move. thx

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080324/ap_on_go_ot/irs_stimulus_payment

A few quotes..

"The Internal Revenue Service will open some 320 offices on Saturday, March 29, to help low-income people including some retirees and veterans get the checks they are eligible for under the economic stimulus act passed by Congress in January."
"A list of IRS offices and partner sites providing assistance is available on the IRS website, http://www.irs.gov., or by calling the IRS hotline, 1-800-906-9887. On March 29, people can call 1-866-234-2942 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. local time."

"IRS field officers will also visit nursing homes and similar locations to prepare returns."

"The IRS said that this week it is also mailing out packages to 20.5 million people receiving Social Security and veterans benefits with information on filing a return." NOTE: YES, my FIL received one of these in the mail a couple days ago. It included instructions and a 1040A form.

He is also eligible for the couples rate even tho his wife passed on last year. The instructions said something about as long as he didn't marry or divorce that year he was eligible for both of them.

The only income my FIL has is about $600/mo in Social Security benefits. We expect a check for him.

another note.. When they start sending these they will start with the lowest last 2 numbers of your ss# first. hmm... ours is 00. Does that mean we will be first or last?

ours is 00You will be first. My DH is 00 and whenever we get the "extra" govt. checks like the one everyone will be getting in May we're always one of the first ones to get those. Wish they'd do that more often

I need to call my Aunt for this...she hasn't had to file since my Uncle passed away. Thanks for this information, I didn't hear about it. Hopefully she received her packet in the mail.

Thank you very much of the info bam66, I have to do this for my mother.

I work for a nonprofit. I think this is very helpful info for our low-income clients. Thanks.

Everyone is ever so welcome. Glad this post was useful.

My father in law was NOT going to file again as usual this year. I almost had him convinced to file for this check, I think, but the mailing from the IRS did the final job.

However, the mailing does look a bit funny. Not totally "business like" like the IRS usually sends.

In order to avoid waiting till July request direct deposit if you get a big SSN.

This is very helpful. I got the mail from the IRS yesterday. I'm on SSDI so I didn't think they'd give me money, but they're gonna! I'm filin' online.

Thanks, OP!

This does nothing but make me mad to tell you the truth. Grrrrrr.....Our government is full of a bunch of morons. First someone who doesn't file taxes shouldn't qualify for a tax rebate. Second they shouldn't be doing this at all for even the highest of tax payers. I am all for low taxes, but what I am not for is how they are going to get this money. They will do two things, borrow it from Foreign governments, or deflate the dollar and print it, still it from our savings and paychecks. Either way we lose, especially the next generation. Current generations can't keep enjoying good times on the backs of their children and grandchildren.

A lot of people have said the same thing...

but so far, none of them are going to send their checks back....

Does this check apply to people who didn't work at all?

To clarify: Asking for my MIL. She filed for divorce last year and as of now the divorce is not yet final. Thanks in advance.

Yes she does qualify as the divorce is not yet finalized & she is still
considered married. Your mil & fil will have to file 1040A jointly to
get the $600.00 combined total for both of them even though one only
had income. This info is on the www.irs.gov site & explains it
very well. My dh & I qualify as he's a disabled veteran & gets
DAV pension every month. Thanks Bam for this info as alot of people
are not aware that they qualify for this tax refund credit.

Stimulus Payment Schedule for Tax Returns Processed by April 15

Economic stimulus payments will be issued according to the last two-digits of the main filer's Social Security number. People who use direct deposit also will be among the first to receive the payments starting May 2. Paper checks will be put in the mail starting May 16.

DIRECT DEPOSIT

Last two SSN digits: Payment will be transmitted:
00 through 20 May 2
21 through 75 May 9
76 through 99 May 16

PAPER CHECK

Last two SSN digits: Payments will be mailed by:
00 through 09 May 16
10 through 18 May 23
19 through 25 May 30
26 through 38 June 6
39 through 51 June 13
52 through 63 June 20
64 through 75 June 27
76 through 87 July 4
88 through 99 July 11

People who file a return after April 15 will receive their economic stimulus payment, but probably about two weeks later than the schedule shows. A return must be filed by October 15 in order to receive a stimulus payment this year. See the online calculator for an estimate of the amount you will receive.

A small percentage of tax returns will require additional time to process and to compute a stimulus payment amount. For these returns, stimulus payments may not be issued in accordance with the schedule above, even if the tax return was processed by April 15.

I'm taking that money straight to Vegas and I'm going to attempt to parlay it into $24k at the craps table. Is that doing my part?

alert mods

If the intent of the tax rebate is to get people to spend money in the economy, why doesn't the government just hand it out to all the companies? Or, they could just put all the money into their own stock index fund.

Giving people money who already proved they don't know how to manage money is idiotic. McCain's statement on bailouts was a welcome relief.

I would give it back if it meant everyone else gave it back and the government used it for a purpose for something useful, like education?

Think the government already did that, JP Morgan got a nice $30B early Christmas gift from them.

This is a sure way to get re-elected (well, except the current president).

I will never even have the opportunity to send my check back.

Had I actually qualified for the stimulus package, I would have spent the money on prostitutes just like our elected officials do.
