I have been an authorized user on my parents card for about 8 years now. Because of that, at age 22 I've got a great credit history length and FICO score. However, at some point in the near future I would like to disjoin from the account and be separated from it, but I do not wanna lose the length of history associated with it. Is there a way to split the card or take my name off the card and have another issued saying I've been a member since 2000?

So the question is...What is the best way to separate myself from that particular card without losing the length associated with it?

Thanks,
Chris

I don't use the card, but my parents do a couple times a month and while they are responsible, I want to separate myself from it because you never know when a mistake could happen that is out of my control and it will effect my credit. I want to keep the length of being 8 years or so but not have it associated with them.

BTW.. I don't even have the card.

what did the credit card issuer say when your parents called and asked them?

Well, being an authorized user is the only way you will have an 8-year-old account on your report. Be it your parent's account or anyone else's, you will still have the same risks regardless.

However, if the account every becomes bad, you can dispute it as being 'not yours' and it will be removed from your report. And if you remove yourself as an AU now, the account will probably remain on your report un-updated for the forseeable future - which seems to address your concern although it will eventually fall off your report and you will loose the age.

The rules have changed as of last year. Being an authorized user on someone else's account no longer benefits ( or detracts in the case of a being an authorized user on someone's account who is a bad payer). See Will your credit score improve if you are an authorized user on a credit card account?
