An interesting article from The Consumerist about how easy it was to hack Sprint accounts.

My guess is that Sprint uses a type of Lexis Nexis service for the so-called identity verification.

I imagine the same logic used on Sprint also applies to any other company that uses Lexis Nexis or similar service.

Identity theft is nothing new for this forum, I just thought the article was interesting reading.

Why call him, just turn on his call forwarding and let him call you LOL

This is nuts. I just tried it with my own account. The weird thing is that they let me create an account when I already have one set up. I would think it would be really easy for them to point out that an account for my number already exists!
The best part is the identity questions they ask.
The car choices for me were cars I've never heard of. One of them was just "El". An other was "Zagato"
So I purposely answered all three questions incorrectly, and it just asks me three more questions. Answered the next three wrong, and 3 more come up. So I guess you can keep guessing and guessing until you get 2 of 3 correctly.

WTF?

one more reason to flee from sprint.

dead, no longer works.

It does look like they have a lockout period after an incorrect question, but still... you only need to know 2 out of 3 I.D. questions. It asked me the name of a property that I once owned. I've never owned a property, and everyone who knows me, knows that. The car question again was ridiculously easy to guess. And then the year of the car wasn't particularly hard to figure out since I probably never owned a car that would require a car loan that was made earlier than 1995.

It does appear to be a weak ID check.

Decision .... decision .... should I get some free phone from sprint and sell it on eBay ?

I mentioned this in another thread: asking for verification questions is weak security, especially if the answers are internet-searchable.

Also, as many of the mentioned examples demonstrate, it is easy to guess the right answer, especially if the thief has some kind of relationship to the victim.

One of the major banks on the East Coast asks: "What sports team do you love to see lose?" Like 40% of the answers aren't Yankees.

"What's your favorite ice cream flavor?" WTF WTF WTF????? Like 70% won't be Vanilla or Chocolate.
