I used to use my Citi ATM card when I traveled, since there's a Citi in almost every major city in the world. However, after this thread where Citi apparently has begun charging fees for using their own ATMs abroad, I'm looking for a new solution.

Are there any banks that let you use ATMs (their own or otherwise) abroad without charge?

Countrywide Bank does not charge anything for using ATMs of other banks - whether in the US or abroad, and waives ATM charges from other banks. Of course there is a monthly limit on how many such charges they would waive - I think it is $10 . I believe there are plenty such banks, especially those that do not have their own ATMs

Are you sure about that? I don't see anything about no fee ATM use in this thread for the SavingsLink:

The description of their money market account says this, "Utilize an ATM to make unlimited withdrawals up to the maximum daily amount.Plus, conduct up to six other types of withdrawals or transfers each monthly period, three of which may be by check," but doesn't say anything about what ATMs you can use?

What banks do you use? Check their websites or call customer service. Several banks have "sister" banks in other countries that don't charge a fee. Or at a minimum, you avoid the "double fee" incurred by that bank and your home bank.

In Mexico, Santander Serfin
In China, China Construction Bank

These are the only places I've used my ATM card recently.

I was not referring to SavingsLink - I have the Money Market account , that pays 3% interest these days . I recently used the ATM card to withdraw money during my trip to the United Kingdom, and was very impressed with the conversion rate I got; and of course, no fees. I agree that this policy is hard to find on their website, but I called and asked, and like I said, I have used it in Canada and the UK, and so far no fees.

No forex fees with UFB Direct and BankDirect. (You can also earn American Airline miles with both).

I also have Citi but used BankDirect abroad recently.

Schwab High Yield Investor Checking. No FOREX, rebates ATM fees.

Please think twice before you use your Captial One credit card overseas. I usually use Citi or AMEX card, but because of the foreign transaction fees and all, I decided to give a shot; so I opened it and Crap One gave a credit line of 20K. I used Captial One to avoid the foreign transaction fees when I was travelling overseas; however, I don't think it was a right thing to do. What happened was that I was overcharged for my hotel stay in Brazil. The bill was $120 more than I expected. Of course, I disputed charges and the long story short, the way the CrapOne handled the dispute was the worst I've ever seen. I should have used Citi Mastercard or AMEX. Whenever there is a dispute, they really do their job. Now I understand why a lot of people in this board call them Crap One.

Anyway, I'm so pissed; however, is is so sad that there is not much to do against the credit card company.

I don't believe Countrywide reimbursses ATM fees from other banks. Does anyone have any documentation on this?

I've recently used my Bank of America card without any transaction fees and with a pretty good exchange rate and thought every one should know:

Canada: Scotiabank
Peru: Scotiabank

So basically it looks like this will work at any Scotiabank location across the world.
