I have had about $2000 worth of stock invested in one company with E-Trade for about 4 years now. I found out recently that my account has been hit with a $40/quarter "account maintenece fee". The only way around this is to perform one trade a quarter or have over $10,000 invested. I am down $200 because of this fee.

Does anyone know of any other companies (ie. Scotttrade) where I can transfer my money over to that won't charge me any fees like this? If so, how hard will it be to transfer from one to another? This is a long-term investment, and I don't want to have to bother with it on a quarterly basis, or at all.

scottrade will not charge you any fee.

If you don't want to transfer out, I believe if you put $1000 in one of their money market accounts, that would eliminate their account inactivity fee. However, the downside is the rate on that is very low. Verify this with a rep.

I'd also like to say zecco is worth dealing with. Zecco and SogoTrade are the only ones worth dealing with... Zecco gives you 10 trades a month free, $4.50 after, for having $2.5k with them, with no monthly/quarterly fee; and SogoTrade gives you $3.00 per trade with no monthly/quarterly fee, and $1.50 per trade with a $10 monthly fee.

tl;dr: If you trade less than 10 times per month, go with Zecco, if you trade more than 14 times per month, get Sogo with the $1.50 $10/mo plan.

Ameritrade doesn't have any maintainse fees not sure if they charge for transfers though

I also don't think there are fees on their IRA accounts. But in the end, Etrade really sucks (other than my 5.75% CD I locked last year).

Look under promotions for that. This is where it says you get 3 free mutual fund trades a month.
