Doing a Balance Transfer with a zero balance card to get the credit, does it work?

I applied for a Chase credit card and they have a 0% BT rate ($75 max fee). I'd like to take out $11k and put it into one of those high yield checking accounts to bring in the interest, but the phone rep said that they need an actual credit card account to do a balance transfer with and that I can't write a check to myself.

So would this work?

1. Transfer $11,000 from a zero balance card to Chase credit card
2. zero balance card now has -$11,000 credit
3. Request $11,000 to be credited to me as a check
4. Chase credit card now has a $11,075 ($75 fee) balance at 0%

Don't do that. Especially if you are thinking of doing it with a BOA card. Call back and get a different rep. You can get a convenience check from chase and you can write it to yourself.

yep.

I WAS planning on doing it with BofA or Wells Fargo (better history with Wells). At worst, they can just refuse the BT, but I don't think they have someone sitting at the desk overseeing this type of stuff. I'm hoping the zero balance card issuer would just have a computer recognize that an account has a negative balance and automatically cut a check to the customer.

Ok, if that's what you want to do, but be forewarned. They don't have an auto computer to cut the check. BOA is notorious for getting pissed off at this type of activity. The worst that could happen is not that you'll be denied. They'll almost certainly close your account.

If you have to ask, then you shouldn't be doing it.

If you read most of the AOR threads around here, they generally say to do the BT to your debit card. I haven't tried it, but I'm setting up for an AOR and plan to BT to my BofA visa debit card.

I remember reading somewhere that BT'ing to a debit card did not work? Maybe it was just a specific issuer, can't remember.

The check that comes with a new Chase card can (normally) be deposited directly into your own bank account. Read the terms that came with the check, that trumps any CSR response.
