I know this is a bit different from the usual CNN Money foreclosure boo-hoo stories, but it annoyed me nonetheless.

On Food Stamps and Still Hungry

Two things about this article pissed me off...

The Washington resident's $280 monthly food stamp allotment doesn't last very long these days, even though she gets a free lunch at a culinary training program at D.C. Central Kitchen. By mid-month, Bean is often reduced to eating canned ravioli and peanut butter and jelly so she can afford to buy milk and baby cereal for McKiya.

I eat PB&J literally every day for lunch...and I have to buy it with my own money. And my work doesn't even provide a free lunch...where's my cnn article?

. said:Sylvia Ford is one of them. The $135 she gets each month lasts two weeks, leaving her dependent on food banks such as Bread for the City. A year ago, the single mother of four grown children could afford lemons. Now it's only lemon juice. Gone are the occasional treats of shrimp or crabmeat. Instead it's stews or soups that she can string out over several days. "I'm just trying to stretch it more," said Ford, 55, who is unemployed but volunteers at the food bank. "I have to come here to get a bag of food to make ends meet."

Maybe she should get a paying job?! Or maybe her 4 grown children could help?

What are they buying? My wife and I spend about $200 in groceries every month.

"Gone are the occasional treats of shrimp or crabmeat"

The horror.

Is it just me or is canned ravioli *not* a cost effective food item to be buying?

Agreed... we go thru about $240 per month for two adults... I guess coupons and sale items aren't compatible with food stamps.

On Food Stamps and Still Hungry?

Whenever I see someone paying with food stamps at the grocery store, the purchaser rarely looks anything even remotely resembling hungry.

My wife and I spend ~225$/month on food and we eat plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and meat...

You guys are completely missing the point. These poor individuals have had to cut back on necessities, such as Ben & Jerry's ice cream, prepackaged dinners, and chips and soda. Have some compassion -- they might have to start shopping store brands!

And after paying for the food with food stamps, they whip out the cash to pay for the beer and cigarettes.

The canned stuff from Chef Boyardee and stuff is pretty cheap, like a buck a can, I used to eat that for quick meals myself heh.

I do have to say, I'm in college and I never watch ANY television at all because there's always something better to do. So I limit the biased news I get as well as advertisements and I swear I spend less money because of it and also analyze real world events better and draw my own conclusions. I was just talking to my roommate about this the other day and I think I'm gonna continue to not have cable after I graduate. It really became apparent the other day talking to my parents who were quoting facts about the "evil oil refineries that are making record profits off of our suffering". I had to do a double take, and was like, where in the world did you hear that? The answer, of course, was the news. I then had to explain to them that refineries are making the lowest profits in years since they haven't been able to pass the increase in oil onto gas prices, and they want crude to go down just as much as everyone else. Just something that really struck me in the past week that I thought i'd share.

Maybe instead of depending on food stamps and a food bank, they should buy a newspaper for the coupons. Even better yet, use the libraries computer to check out the latest CVS coupon/reward bucks dealios. It seems that the ones who use the food stamps usually buy the expensive junk food to fill their carts. You can fill a cart with food for less than $100 with coupons or get 8 bags of groceries for less than $20 at the local produce markets.

In order to receive food stamps, there should be some sort of required reading or 2 hour class. Shopping 101, How to cook my own food, Coupons - what are they?

If only the government followed such advice ---

God, I WISH the gov't would make them buy store brands with their foodstamps/WIC. I have been buying store brand formula for my last 3 kids, it really burns my a** to see the chick in front of me turning in her WIC checks for brand name,w hich easily costs double the money. Formula is gov't regulated, store brand or not, not like its worse quality. Welfare system is SO out of whack (like you didn't know that already)

And yeah, we manage to feed our family of 7 for $450 a month or less (granted 2 of them are infants and fairly cheap to feed), what the heck are these people buying. They should make them take a bargain shopping course before doling out the food stamps...People not getting assistance are getting creative with cutting the food budget, those on assis. should have to do the same. No crabmeat or shrimp....for the love.....

This quote irks me...

Phyllis Bean, who is in a culinary training program, skimps on her own meals so her little girl can eat.

Aren't parents supposed to make sacrifices for their children? Isn't that a basic requirement of being a parent?

Good Grief!

Moral hazard. Why conserve when it's free?
