Friend says they read several posts about experiences and whom they pull for above and other southern CA credit unions. I have done numerous searches but did not find. Have you seen?

I agree, this post is better directed at a site like creditboards.com. But, if you wanna know, I am a member of 6 California Credit Unions, one of them in San Diego. Every time I opened an account, they ALWAYS pulled from Experian and sometimes Equifax. But, I'm not a member of San Diego CU or Cal Coast CU, though. I didn't like what they have to offer. USE Credit Union seemed to have better deals when I was living in San Diego, but at the time I opened my account their membership criteria was very restrictive. I think now, all you have to be is a San Diego resident to open an account these days.
IMHO, the best credit unions are Navy Federal and USAA, both of which I am fortunate to have. If you can't get that, then PenFed is next in line. Do a search on the FatWallet boards on each to see what they have to offer and what other people did to join, especially with PenFed.
