Pay down the balances first.

I have noticed some people do not pay down to 0%, have some significant balance and AOR was still a success.
I am not sure about specific number though.
What approach you would recommend: pay down to below %35 on each card? or to some other %?

alert mods

One conservative approach would be to have reduce the number of cards showing a balance, have no card over 50%, and get global utilization under 10%. Take note of the low chase id protect scores.

But let's look at it from a cost-benefit basis, too. Let's ASSUME that you have liquid cash to pay of these cards. How much longer do you have left on the current 0% deals? Probably not that long. Not only that, but the balances are with BofA, Chase, and Discover, ALL of which are banks where you can reallocate lines and do really effective balance transfers... but you can't reallocate limits if the card is maxed out. So you're effectively costing yourself some size on your next transfer with those banks.

To be honest, I don't know why you bothered applying for the 0% cards a few months ago, especially if they remain unused. It's not "o-rama-ey" at all.

markkundinger,

Thanks for the very well thought reply. It is quite helpful.

markkundinger said:One conservative approach would be to have reduce the number of cards showing a balance, have no card over 50%, and get global utilization under 10%.

50% sounds like a good number as well as number of cards with a balance. This is what I will be working on now.
But why 10%? This seems quite low. The numbers I have seen are 90%, 75% 50% and 35%. Have you seen 10% mentioned somehwhere or it is just a very conservative estimate of what banks would see as low balance?

markkundinger said:

Since others reported much higher scores, I just ignored them.
I don't have any kind of very bad stuff on my report (collection etc),
no late payments at all and utilization is under 35%, but the score is around 600?
I thought this was just a weird score model.

1 months to be precise.

The plan was to transfer two big balances from BoA and Chase to Baylor and Citi that have new 0% for 12m. Then apply for Chase and BoA cards, get any new cards with not so big CL but with 0% APR offer and consolidate old big Chase and BoA to good lines with 0% APR offers.

This was partially a mistake, partially didn't go as planned: I need some CL to tranfer balances from two card with expiring offers. My mistake: I applied for too many cards. One card would have done just ok.

I'd go with the iFly instead of Nat Parks. iFly gives a $15 statement credit on first purchase or BT. Nat Parks is supposed to give a bag but I haven't received anything yet. I got the iFly credit shortly after I made a purchase. Plus I got my first magazine last week from the free subscription!

This matches what I have, so I will try to consolidate
and try to get a cap on the BT fee from a retention dept.

How about the BofA NEA Rewards - 12 mos, 0%, $30 fee cap. Not sure what they'll do since you already are carrying a BofA balance but I was instantly approved, they reallocated from an existing BofA card and ACHed the money straight into my checking account.

Where did you get this card list? Have you been checking other A0R's? If so, look again.

Anyway, try the Citi Associated Bank – 12 mos, 0%, 0 BT Fees. It doesn't count against the Citi total since it is co-branded. They have been handing out generous CLs also. Two more cool things - make sure you personalize in order to figure out if you have been approved if you don't get an instant (props to swishyx) AND the 12 mo BT is good for 12 mos from the date you initiate the BT, not account open.

EDIT: meant to put 'in addition to the AT&T Universal' - not instead of...

I would say scratch the HSBC, find something else.

Better yet, try the BOA Platnium Plus, 12 mos, 0%, $0 fee Link to BOA $0 fee 12 mo 0%

akor said:Fifth Third - 12m, %3.9 for life $99 capI would not recommend doing this. My rents have it. They are pretty stingy on CL's and you can only make payments to the card electronically with a 5/3 account. Again, I think there are better cards out there to use up your inquiries. Search other's AOR lists for a better AOR list.

The terms come up 3% fee with $10 min no max for me. Do you think the site determines your zip code and adjusts accordingly?

I see that for cash advances but the TOC that pop up for me says "Standard Balance Transfer Fee: None"

Edit: I am in North Carolina (?)

Shows as:

Standard Balance Transfer Fee: None.
Standard Cash Advance Fee: 3% of each such transaction (minimum $10).

Where were you two months ago, MikeR397?

Nice find Mike on the "new generic" platinum plus card. Seems like it was intended to be targeted, and a pity the limit seemingly maxes at 15,000, but I'd give it a shot if I was applying for stuff.

I think it is intended to be targeted. My wife got this card through a targeted offer, and sure enough a $15K limit. Denied on CLIs a couple of times since. They do keep sending no-fee BT checks with every bill. Would be handy to transfer this balance to new card and then draw the balance up again.

As per MikeR397's recommendation I am updating the list of cards I will apply for:
- skip HSBC
- skip RBS
- add a very very nice BOA card!

Thanks Mike!

I did see that card.. unfortunately a month ago I was denied when I applied for it. I applied for four cards: Citi Drivers edge, Baylor, LifeSpring and Citi Associated Bank. All inquries were on TU...
Now I am hesitant to apply for it because it is so sensitive... What's your take: should I apply for it again?

Regarding BofA NEA Rewards cards. It looks very good, but a) it "requires" NEA membership, i.e. you have to be a teacher\student and pay the dues. There is some thread where people speculate of possible AA againt you if you apply for the card, then they check if you are a NEA member ...figured out you are not, and kill all of your accounts with BOA
I think I will just appy for BOA card that MikeR suggested, no membership required.

Regarding iFly. This is what I found - 9m, 1.9%? Could you post your link please? Thanks dougneb!
