Received a certified letter from Key bank today. Citing a Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), they have some questions they want to ask me, that were not asked during the account opening. I am on the fence as to who to contact as they gave me two options, contact my "Relationship Manager" at my local branch or I can call an 800 number for there RISC Office Compliance Department which is in, I assume Ohio where there head quarters is. I do not want my account closed yet as I am still waiting for my GPS and i am still 30 days out I believe...but if I do not contact them within 30 days, "my account may be closed"...If I had my GPS, i would let them close it no problem as that would make this GPS deal even sweeter because I won't have to pay the early closure fee. The account itself was used solely to deposit coins and then pay my credit card from the account....but it was not used very heavily and this letter got generated almost 2 weeks after my last visit to them...If I was going to trigger a SAR, I figured my summer time deposit activities would have done it, not the light usage I have been doing. We'll see I guess. I am leaning to going in and seeing the local guy as he may be more lenient than the woman who works at this all day. |

I called the local office. Local Guy (LG) looked through some e-mails to find the name of the person from the RISC office to jog his memory what the letter was about. LG then called the RISC person and told me he (LG) was just supposed to setup an appointment for the RISC person to call me back. I set it for the next day, but have never heard back from the RISC person or the LG. My problem is I threw away the letter once the appointment was set. Any chance you can PM me with the # to the RISC office?
I'm in the same boat as you. 30 days out on my GPS and don't want to miss out on it. OTOH I would love to try and convince Key to still take my coins so I don't mind calling their RISC office and giving it a shot. Like you said, from the letter it seems like I have to call or else have my account closed anyway. Although I also don't believe Key would just close it. I had a previous letter from a local branch saying they were closing my account but they never did. I've made several deposits since and my GPS is still on schedule when I call and check on it. |

I caught up on the FlyerTalk thread this weekend. I am now convinced that there are some there with no sense of self-control. These are the same people who hastened the demise of the AMEX traveler's check loophole by buying the maximum amount daily on multiple cards. I know goose is tasty, but I'd rather get golden eggs for an extended period.... |

I know goose is tasty, but I'd rather get golden eggs for an extended period.... Track back a few pages in this thread and see plenty of folks who have been cooking the goose here on FW too.
And of course, a number of people have shown cooking skills on both threads. |

Nonaii said:karatz said:From WFTV.com Man Pays $21K Property Taxes In Coins Frank Alford Says It's His Way Of Protesting Higher Taxes Further down is this quote "Alford, a retiree with two hip replacements, loaded what he estimated was 400 pounds of coins and then headed inside to the treasurer's office to settle up. Deputy clerk Bette Buechler did a quick tally of Alford's property taxes. When asked if the office has to accept the Susan B. Anthony coins, Buechler said, "I think I'm understanding if it comes in pennies, we don't have to.""
a penny is legal tender. someone is not paying in lottery tickets, antiques or solid gold bars. they're paying with a legal tender coin. what is the possible recourse for a citizen if the government does not accept its own legal tender?
wow. it's *my* understanding that just because a government employee is lazy doesn't exempt that government employee from doing their job. i'd love to see the follow up on Ms. Buechler (and with a name like Bette she's gotta be older than dirt) understanding. See my post above. |

mimi6789 said:I just came back from Huntington Bank for an one-hour interrogation....
The bank lady, the bank security guy, and more interestingly, one FBI agent were present during the meeting.
Basically, they wanted to know where, why, how I got these coins, and where, why, and how I deposited these coins. They also questioned a judgement shown on my credit report.... They also questioned lots of my personal finances, my usage of credit card patterns. They also questioned whether I am a coin collector because I told some tellers that I collected coins (they must have reviewed the bank surveillance tape or interviewed the tellers).. Lots, lots of questions, even after I showed them my mint coin purchase receipts.
The punch line is that me depositing the large amount of coins at different branches has raised suspicion of money laundering or whatever other (illegal, they did not say that out right) activities... The bankers said that they recommend me to contact them in advance before depositing, fill in a form, likely called currency transection report (not sure what is the correct name of that form), and deposit the coins into one branch, rather than multiple branches.
Boy, I was not expecting such an interrogation session, I thought the bank was simply wanting to see evidence of where I got these coins from. I was a little nervous and felt offensive at the beginning (because the bankers invited FBI agent to be present in the meeting, because Mint is one entity of federal government), but the meeting went OK at the end, I think, but I am not so sure. I have tried to cooperate as much as I can and as truthful as I can. I might have rumbled a few times, because I was not expecting such a long meeting. It seems that my intention to help circulate these coins at different branch is hunting me... Now, I have a record on FBI database... Not sure whether this is a blessing or not for me or my family. My kids will be going to college soon, I just don't want any of these to be on their " record". I guess, my understanding of what FBI does is very limited.
So, just want to give you guys a heads-up if you are confronted in the near future. Somebody else posted THIS in another thread here at FW (don't remember whom or which thread, so credit goes to that poster), anyways; Personally, I learned a great deal by watching the long video. |

I received the form letter from the Mint today. I'm thinking of framing the letter along with a 5x7 of a stack of boxes full of dollar coins...ah, memories. |

I think I have only bought and deposited about $30K of dollar coins, so I am definitely not one of the big players in this scheme. I have made substantial efforts to put these coins into circulation in addition to using them to make money. The debate over what constitutes "killing the goose" is amusing to me. The only people who have expressed any interest in these coins for purposes other than getting rewards or Cash Back are collectors. No one is thrilled about these coins as an alternative to the dollar bill. Discontinuing the dollar bill is the only thing that will get these coins circulating. This program we are exploiting is serving the goal of someone at the mint to get these coins out of mint hands. It will continue until all of the coins are out of mint hands. Then they can pretend for a while that they got them into circulation. The first (and perhaps only) priority is to ship the coins out. As long as there is no limit on orders, each person will exploit this at some level below what would cause unbearable embarrassment. That level is obviously different for me than for the truly big spenders, though I have certainly sustained more embarrassment than others. And for those who do not embarrass, the limit will be set by what their banks will tolerate. If you find a cooperative bank, as some have done, I truly cannot blame you for seizing the opportunity to make $1400 by a massive deposit one hour before the armored truck shows up. And every coin not grabbed by a collector is going to take that same trip, sooner or later, and with virtually no time spent in circulation. So I am not going to lose any sleep over whether the purposes of the mint are served by what we do. The purpose of getting the coins into circulation was doomed from the start. The farcical purpose of getting the coins out of the mint is served equally well by every shipment, regardless of the purchaser's intent. |
