If we can buy them from the mint, why can't the e_bay buyers (serious question)?

at 300, maybe some combo of CashBack/gift cards/ebucks it works out(I doubt it)

Or maybe they just don't know where to buy it and you just hope someone bites.

I was thinking both the same things, but most of the auctions linked seem to reference them being sold out on the mint website. The first one even had a picture of the box from the mint. I would think most people would at least look for the site and see that they can get them cheaper if they wait 2 weeks. But I guess this isn't $1 coins, they're not face value. People are buying them for whatever reason they have and are willing to pay a little more I guess. Either way, it might be time to re-open my account.

Oh here we go:

US Mint said: A limit of one (1) coin per household is in effect for the first week of this product’s release. At the end of this period, the United States Mint will re-evaluate this limit and either extend, adjust or remove it.

R.I.P.

i didn't even use this that much, but it was a heck of a deal.

EDIT:

Turns out this does not work...

I thought free shipping only kicked in on purchases over $500? After paying shipping fees on a $250 order how much profit is to be made using a 5% card?

rated:

As far as I remember shipping was free even on a $250 order, though it was shipped through a less desirable USPS method.

The real question for highrisk is have you actually tried this yourself? Based on a missing detail in the steps I wonder. E-Gift Certificates are intended for online ordering/checkout, and $1 direct ship coins are now ordered through a special mailed in form which specifically states check, wire, and money order are the only acceptable payment methods. So did the Mint allow you to use an E-gift certificate on the mailed order form?

rated:

I admit I have not tried it, but I don't see why it wouldn't work...just personally for me it isn't worth the time (I never did the original coin ordering program either), but wanted to share an idea with others who it is worth their time.

Yeah unfortunately I can personally verify that the Mint will NOT allow you to order direct ship coins using egift certificates as dl73 indicated, unless anyone has personal experience testing this otherwise IMO there is no point in discussing this further...As you stated even if it were possible (which it isn't) it would be a huge hassle for little gain IMO...

rated:

Yes, I noticed this option an posted it months ago... and it is a no go... I tried. Doh...

rated:

Tried months ago as well, definitely a no go.

Ended up using the gift certificates to buy gifts for family instead.

No, I could care less...like I said I never even did the original coin ordering program NOT WORTH MY TIME...I just saw this thread and was browsing the page and saw that and wanted to share my thought. If I did not do the original coin ordering program, why would I do this one...?

Sorry, but move along troll...

Wait, so it wasnt worth your time to order any coins, but it was worth your time to research and come up with some half-assed way you could claim keeps the program alive - not to mention, pimp buying $20k mint gift certificates at a time - with absolutely no clue if it was even a viable plan? Yes, there's definately a troll here, but it ain't me.

Wow, this is hard. Who is the real troll? First candidate just joined and is talking out of both sides of his/her mouth. Second candidate has been here for years, has almost 10k in posts and has helped to many members to count. Ya, this is real hard to figure out!!!

I'm still not sure... Do either of them live under a bridge?

Guys, you are killing me here. I see there are new postings, so I think, "Maybe the coins are back!" Then I read the posts and see there is just another argument over who is a troll. Don't get me wrong, I have noticed Gitch99's substantial contibutions here. I don't think he's a troll.

And now this post will raise and then dash the hopes of thousands. Oh, the irony!

My response was solely in regards to his post (which he subsequently deleted) stating with an implied certainty that you could pay for a box of directship coins with a $200 GC and $50 cash, and then suggested that you load up with $20k of such GCs since the fee was fixed at $5 regardless of quantity. It deserved to be called out, lest someone actually follow the advice and get stuck with thousands of unusable Mint GCs.

I blame SegaRob as the one who revived the thread in the first place.... It was almost to the point of finally being archived.

I requested that the Mods lock the thread. Thanks to the OP, gatzdon, and all those who contributed to this thread. This has been surely the easiest and least expensive way to exploit rewards and Cash Back credit cards, and deserves to become a FWF legendary deal.

ETA: Really, Mods, this deal is as dead as this parrot, and further discussion is fruitless.

rated:

For those who agree that this thread should finally get locked, please green this post; otherwise, red it. Thanks!

It should def get locked as the deal is not coming back and I get excited when I see new posts here.

Hey, the Bible has a couple of folks who rose from the dead. Perhaps the US Mint will relent as those dollars keep piling up in warehouses............The FAT lady hasn't sung just yet!!!!!

I wouldn't have bumped this thread, but that last post is only an hour ago, so I figured what difference does it make.

In another thread, I did post more details, but here is the primary source of my info.

http://www.usmint.gov/downloads/about/annual_report/2010AnnualRe...

Seignorage due to the "Direct Ship" program for 2010 was around $60 Million. The Mint has a net profit of only $55 Million for 2010.

Without the Direct Ship Program in it's former glory, the mint has to figure something out to remain profitable. My guess is that they will write this year's performance off as due to the change in Mint Directors. Next year, circulation has to pick up big time, or look for them to find some other way to pump out product.

Remember this though, all of the Mint's seignoriage is at the Federal Reserve's expense. In the last 3 years, I don't think we heard much out of the Fed about this. It was really more the media than the fed that killed it. So there is hope, but it will probably be much more discrete whatever they end up doing.

rated:

Oh and I do vote for locking the thread. If something big happens, it will be worthy of a new thread. We don't need people posting more disinformation here.

The deal is definitely dead and probably so at least until Obama appoints another Director to the Mint (currently the position is vacant and I doubt the Deputy Director would be so bold as to reinstitute accepting credit cards for the direct ship program).

If some new development occurs, it would be worthy of a new thread.

Personally, I doubt we will see anything occur until Obama appoints a new Director. Currently the position is vacant and I highly doubt the Deputy Director would be bold enough to bring back accepting credit cards for the direct ship program.

Edit:
Sorry for the double post, the first one gave me an error and when I refreshed, it wasn't displayed.

Well-written, Gatzdon.(referring to your 2:54 P.M. post).

Let's not forget George H.W. Bush's famous words: "Read my Lips;No new taxes"......

Governments specialize in inflating their way out of debt and/or raising taxes. The Direct Ship program may be in "suspended animation", but.........,"Where there's life, there's hope"..

Hey guys,

I just bought $100,000 in AMEX gift cards to purchase coins. I'm gonna be so rich!

But even if it does happen, it wont be in a form that would make the details in this thread useful.
