Works fine if you are expensing the gasoline in your business. Otherwise the gas you buy is a nondeductible expense and the gains on the hedge are taxable.

On the flip side, if gas prices did go down, you'd have a loss to apply elsewhere on your return. So just buy a few extra shares of UGA to cover the tax burden.

Use GasBuddy to find the cheaper gas outlets, invest in a more fuel efficient vehicle, and study the concepts on CleanMPG to squeeze many more miles out of every tank.

No need to make someone else rich with speculative gimmicks.

So is anyone else going to give it a shot?

What about when our congress forces Saudi to reduce oil prices and congress forces oil co execs to reduce prices and bush opens up coastline

Gas prices will go down.

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

UP UP and AWAY.

Peak oil is HERE

Sadly, you couldn't be more wrong. They may drop down for a little while, but gas will be $5-6 plus within a year or two. World demand and our reliance on foreign oil will be the end of our low gas prices. Gas is controlled by people that hate us..... We need several hundred nuclear power plants now. Sadly, that won't happen either because the knee jerk anti nuclear reaction.

This deal seems to risky for me. Just buy the etf.

Whoa.....several hundred? The latest nuke project in Tampa, FL was projected initially to cost $5B, that moved to $10B and now they are saying it will come in at $18 billion.

Several hundred plants at $18B equals a lot of arithmetic, don't cha think?

We spend $18B every two months in Iraq. If the war had ended 4 years ago, we would have been able to build 24 nuclear plants with the money saved.

That's not even including cost reductions from bureaucratic streamlining, economies of scale, and technology improvements.

I'm personally not sure about several hundred, but ...

Here's some more arithmetic:
20 million barrels of oil per day imported into the US at $140/barrel = $2.8 billion dollars of oil per day = $1.022 trillion of oil imported per year at current cost. Ouch.

I'm going to give it a shot. I signed up yesterday.

Also, for those considering ways to improve their MPG, I've snagged about a 22% increase in MPG (local driving) in my car by keeping my car in neutral to slow down, and when sitting at red lights. That's in a 1999 Civic, but it should work for any automatic or manual car.

alert mods

By using a calculator and some simple math:

If you drive 15k miles per year and get 20 mpg in your SUV, it would only take a rise of 1% (yes, ONE PERCENT) in gas prices (at $4 per gal) to recoup your initial $30 annual fee. As long as you're responsible and keep track of your spending by not going over, you save $$$ if gas goes up more than $0.04 per gallon (in this scenario).

You conveniently forget to include the opportunity cost of losing out on 5% cash-back with your credit card, and the $1.95/transaction recharge fee.

I believe I mentioned that in my first post. Still, many people nowadays don't have 5% gas cards. Plus, if this site lasts long enough, with gas prices increasing it wouldn't take much even with a 5% card. You can get a 2% back on everything card which means prices need to rise just 3% (or at $4.50/gallon, 13 cents). That's not that much and it might be effective in the very near future.

Call me conservative. I still prefer my steady 5% Cash Back from AMEX Simplycash on gas purchase. Like several posters have mentioned, this company can go out of business very fast (hello screwy Sunrocket??? I still have some several months of prepaid service....he he he). When it's out of business, I don't think we will be getting our gallons back.

I'm glad you guys saw this - I was just coming here to post this actual (I know - a mod posting in finance? Unbelievable.)

I commute to work at FW, so this deal caught my eye. My Subaru Outback gets okay gas mileage, but after the horrible winter we've had, I want to hold on to a car with All Wheel Drive - no hybrids for me yet.

I'm really on the fence about this deal. I'm just starting out from college, so I don't have loads of money laying around - so it sounds like a good deal. But then again, I'm raising an eyebrow or two to some of the fine print.

One point the article made was if gas went down, you could just save the miles you accrued through the plan for whenever they go back up. Given the current economic climate, I really don't see this place going belly-up unless gas prices go down, which I don't think will happen at least for the next couple of months.

I'm really tempted to try this, so if I do decide to, I'll glad be another one of Finance's "guinea pigs" for this deal!

BBB Comments and Analysis
This company first came to the Bureau’s attention on July 1, 2008. According to the company's website they are offering a gas card program allowing consumers to purchase a chosen number of gallons of gasoline at the current average rate in their area. The company further claims that by investing its members money in a hedge fund the card will be good for future purchases at participating gas stations even if the price of gas should increase. There is an annual membership fee ranging from $29.95 to $39.95, depending on the program you choose. Florida corporate records show the company is located in Miami, Fl. The company’s website FAQ states that “the card is currently accepted by more 95% of the filling stations in the United States”, however on July 2, 2008 the BBB was informed by MyGallons founder Steve Verona that their negotiations with US Bank’s Voyager program have broken off and they currently do not have a vendor to process transactions with the gas stations listed on their website. Other reports indicate that similar programs instituted in the Northeast last year for pre-paid natural gas purchases resulted in several companies leaving their customers holding worthless paper. The BBB encourages consumers to carefully read and understand all of the terms and conditions of this offer. This information can be obtained from the company website: www.mygallons.com. This report will be updated as more information becomes available.

The following grid displays the number and responses to complaints over the last 36 months:

Complaint Experience
We have received no complaints against this company.

Government Actions
We know of no government action taken against this company.

Advertising Review
The Bureau is concerned that the company's advertising contains a material omission of fact. Specifically, while the website proclaims that any gas station in the US that accepts credit cards will accept the My Gallons Card, however the company has informed the Bureau that no contractual agreements to process the card have been made as yet.

Other Considerations
We know of no other matter or practice relating to this company that may assist you in your consideration of this company.

You know I just have to laugh, mostly at myself. Earlier this year I got screwed over by an internet company and if I had just looked at the BBB website I wouldn't of used that company. At the time I had said I was going to check any business I do online with the BBB to avoid it in the future. While I didn't sign up for this I was thinking of it and I didn't even think to check it on the BBB even though I went there for other companies.
