Got an e-mail yesterday saying that they'd give me $50 to open an Electric Orange checking account and use the associated debit card 3 times.

However, when I try to open the account (via www.ingdirect.com/electric50), the reference code is apparently invalid.

Anyone else having trouble with this?

I also received the email, with both $25 (www.ingdirect.com/electric) and $50 promotion. Both reference codes are invalid.

How about we post the codes so we're ready to use them when ING fixes the glitch?

I only got the $25 offer -- reference code EM226

What is the reference code for the $50 offer?

$50 code for me was EM227.

Here's a Bronx cheer for a company that sends out an offer that is invalid the VERY NEXT day!

FWIW, I sent them an e-mail asking whether the reference code really is supposed to be invalid already.

It works now.

It didn't work for me online, but I was able to open it by talking to a CSR. She was very surprised about the promotional - perhaps it's just really, really new?

Yep, works now for me too.

Question for anyone who has done this promotion:

If I pay for my groceries and choose the "credit" option, but the cashier doesn't make me sign because it is under a certain amount, does that still count towards the three transactions?

Also, is ING a hard pull on your credit report when you open a savings account?

I got the $25 offer a few weeks ago and it worked fine. They say I should get my money on 10/22.

Same here with the 25 money should hit on the 17th.

Yes, this should count.

edit: Opening this account was EXTREMELY easy because I already had an ING savings account. Took about 3 minutes.

Too bad ING keeps lowering their rates... otherwise I might have actually used this account.

If you open their checking account, it is a hard pull because of their overdraft protection.

That sucks.

Was it even worth the $50 for whatever hit I take on my credit score? Probably. How far can it bring it down?

I'll have to go back and check but I don't remember my credit monitoring service reporting any hard pulls at the time.

Someone who just opened account and has 3 agency credit monitoring, please take a look at your reports. Is there hard pull or not?

I opened up an Electric Orange account last night and an inquiry with Equifax showed up on my credit monitoring today. I was hoping to avoid a hard pull since I already have an Orange Savings account with ING. I think the hard pull was because of overdraft protection; but I couldn't find any way to opt out of it during the application process.

I just tried. I have an account and everything was going fine until the end

ING HARD Pull for Electric ORange Checking

INGDirect said: Do you pull my credit if I apply for Electric Orange and the Overdraft Line of Credit?

Yes, as part of your application, ING DIRECT will obtain information about you from a consumer credit reporting agency (a “hard pull”) to confirm that you are eligible for Electric Orange.

Bah. Disappointing. I guess my credit monitor must have missed it. I don't remember off the top of my head which agency it monitors.

Oct 17, 2008 Cha-ching! Your bonus is now posted 25.00

Pretty funny.

I remember Bank of America offered $100 bonus for opening a checking account last year. Waiting for similar deal again

Is this Electric Orange promotion open to existing customers? Only new customers?

Or only existing customers without an Electric Orange account?

Should online purchases count as "signature-based purchases"?

Did this offer already expired since it doesn't recognize the code?

Update: Nevermind, the code worked fine.

cure said: Should online purchases count as "signature-based purchases"?

This is what it says under Account Type:
Electric Orange Get a Bonus! when you click on the Bonus!

How to get your Electric Orange Bonus
· Activate your Electric Orange MasterCard@ Debit Card.
· Use your Card to make at least 3 signature-based purchases within the first 45 days. After you do that, your $50 Bonus will be automatically paid to your Electric Orange, 50 days after your account has been opened.
· Keep in mind, only one Electric Orange per customer.

What's a signature-based purchase?
It's a Card purchase made without using your Personal Identification Number(PIN) when paying. A majority of transactions don't involve a PIN and are considered signature-based purchases.

Examples of signature-based transactions include:
· Any purchases that require your signature(choosing 'Credit' instead of 'Debit') when checking out.
· Internet, phone or mail order purchases.
· Using your Card for automatic bill payments like your cell phone, cable or utilities.

I noticed something strange, I opened 2 accounts today and made sure the EM227 reference code was there.

1) Account #1 is my mom's and under Account Type, it shows Electric Orange Get a Bonus!
2) Account #2 is my own and under Account Type, it shows Electric Orange

With #2, it seems like the offer is not part of the account but the only difference is that on my account, I had to call ING Direct Customer Security who verified the information twice and then it allowed me to continue the application process.

Anyone else who used the reference code EM227 and only have Electric Orange instead of Electric Orange Get a Bonus! showing under Account type?

Thanks OP!

Thanks OP, just waiting for the card to come to get my $50!

Just got an email that I was approved for my $25 bonus, even though I signed up for the $50 code. That is SHADY. I am calling them now, will let you know what they say.

I called up, told that that I had used code EM227 and the woman on the phone said it was a known issue, she looked up an internal memo, and that memo advised her to immediately deposit the other half of my bonus into my checking account. So, I already have $25 of the bonus, and now I am just waiting on the other $25 on the pre-determined date that ING emailed me about.

ING REVERSED the adjustment that they made earlier in the day. According to ANOTHER phone rep, they will be giving me the full $50 on the 45th day after the account was opened. She said the other rep should never have deposited the money in the first place, since I am on track to receive the $50. If that reversal didn't take place, I would have ended up with a $75 bonus. I have no confirmation that this full credit will be given, but she says she notated my account -which I then confirmed with another rep by calling back.

BY THE WAY - earlier today, I came here to tell you guys about my success in getting the CORRECT bonus added to my account, but in that previous (NOW EDITED POST, DUE TO A TYPO), I had mistakenly said I had signed up for a $25 code. In any case, it has been clear from the beginning that I signed up for a $50 bonus. Check out my post from October 15. http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/finance/869221/m12896133#m128961... I said "is it even worth $50 to take a hit on my credit score" - meaning I had used code EM227, and was concerned that even $50 wasn't necessarily worth the potential hit on my credit score for the overdraft protection. Just wanted to be clear that I was not in any way, shape or form trying to scam ING.

I also just received an email from ING that I'll be getting a $25 deposit. I signed up using the $50 promo code. I'll update once I've confirmed that I got either the $25 or $50.

Called the CSR. He said to go ahead and wait and see what posts to my account ($25 or $50). I told him that I signed up through the ingdirect.com/electric50/ link and used the appropriate promo code. He was pretty clueless about the whole thing and kept putting me on hold to talk to his supervisor. Basically their answer was just "wait and see whatcha get." =(

Are either joint accounts? From previous bonuses ($25 for opening a savings, etc), I figured that the primary account holder determines who the account belongs to as far as bonuses are concerned.

Strange, I thought I posted here last month. I was one who got a $50 offer, then a few weeks ago I got an email saying I qualified for my $25 bonus. Customer service said to wait and see, so I did, and my $50 bonus was posted this morning.

Saw the update on the other ING thread ($20 bonus) and hadn't checked my account in a while. I signed up for the $50 bonus back on Nov 3 and received the bonus (Cha-ching!) on Dec 20 - thanks OP!

The site is still up, but when I go to open it says the EM227 promo code is no longer valid. Is there a new promo code?
