When times get tough, sometimes the best way to make money is to find new ways to reduce expenses.

I'd like to bring back Dave Hansen's excellent thread specific suggestions for living frugally without hardship, which has long been archived. Dave's point is to reduce expenses by being smart, not through extreme self-denial.

Related to this also are the threads:

living frugally by saving energy.
saving money on groceries
What do you guys do on the side for extra $
Your Telecommunication Cost - and how to reduce it

The first one has excellent suggestions for reducing your heating bill this winter. The last one needs to be updated. Please post any related threads in the quick summary.

I'll start out with two suggestions:

We use Voicepulse "local unlimited+200" service for our (voip) landline, for $15/mth. Local means your area code+any area code that borders it. After that, you get 200 national long distance per month, which is more than enough for us.

We just got an energy audit through our utility company. Following through with suggestions for insulation and sealing, the state of New Jersey will rebate us 20% of the cost, and up to 50% if we put in a new boiler. The blower test with the energy audit found all kinds of leaks where I had not thought to look. It should pay for itself in 3 years.

buy the "new" second hand things

there are plenty of "new" items sitting in your Saver's stores or available on craigslist

you might find brand new ties with the tags still on them for $5
or kitchen appliances that were never opened because people received them as gifts
or maybe even a pair a dress shoes that were never worn

it is funny to complemented on things you bought at the thrift store

Agree with on on all but the tires.
They do go bad, so if you purchase "new" tires look at the produced date

Germanpope said "TIES" not "TIRES"...... Should be safe with secondhand ties.

I'd like to see the price of bottled water come down below the price of a coke. I refuse to drink either, but maybe we can boycott bottled water (unless the tap water is not safe) and make this happen.

Not as long as there are twits out there willing to pay for someone else's tapwater.

So when I go to McDonalds and want a hamburger, I order a cheeseburger, hold the cheese.

I will have to notice that.

You top posted, so this may be hard to follow.

I buy 2nd hand tires for my truck. OVERSIZED tires for my tuck ar 400 bucks EACH, brand new... I get take-offs (from people tha ttried them but don't like them) from a local recycler... he charges me less than 30 bucks EACH... monted and balanced!

Speaking of cheap mechanical.... I NOW work on my bike myself, since the labor rate hit 99 bucks/ hour. Oil, tranny, primary fluid changes, etc are dirt cheap. I just bult the exhaust myself, at 1/4 the cost of the dealer (eBay parts, and my labor (about 2 to 3 times as long as the dealer, but sense of accomplishment comes for free with it!)).

I still let the dealer change oil in the diesel truck.... cost to me for 12 quarts of oil and the filter are EQUAL to what the dealer charges me... so the diffence is ME getting dirty for 2 hours, or WAITING at the dealer (sipping coffee) for 1 hour).

I ride the bike to work as much as possible (cutting commute in half, dollar-wise)... and I take my OWN LUNCH (search for that thread....lol).

Lol. Near me cheeseburgers are 1.09 but the doubles are a dollar. So I guess you could order a double but hold the extra patty and slice of cheese if you really wanted just a cheeseburger. But now that would be a waste wouldn't it?

Same here. But for some reason I still buy the cheeseburgers over the doubles. I guess it's worth paying 10 more cents on each visit to save the tens of thousands I'd likely spend on triple bypass surgery if I went for the doubles.

One tip is that when I eat out in restaurants, many meals come with a side (i.e. potatoes, fries, rice, etc). I often want two different sides, all of which are usually priced differently. I'll choose the more expensive of the two sides to go with the plate (since it's already included) and order the cheaper side dish ala carte. It's common sense but you'd be surprised at how many people don't follow this rule.
