The terms on this link do not say the initial purchase has to be a Playstation from Sony, it just says "Your first single sales receipt purchase equal or greater than $299 ("Qualifying Purchase") must be made by 3/31/09". The Playstation is seemingly just an example of something you *could* buy to meet the requirement.
I am confused about whether the $299 to get the first $100 statement credit has to be spent at the Sony website, or can it just be spent on anything anywhere as long as it is a single purchase over $299?
Glitch99, when you click on apply on the website for the 2nd offer, this is what it says:
"write down your new account number, CVV2 and expiration date and/or print the application confirmation page, as you will need this information register your card and make your first one-time online qualifying purchase SonyRewards.com before you received your card in the mail"
so does this mean you will not even receive your card in physical form until you make a qualifying purchase at Sonyrewards.com?
It's confusing, and the fact that the statement is full of grammar errors makes it more so.

It's confusing, and the fact that the statement is full of grammar errors makes it more so.No, its unrelated. Its Sony wanting to boost Sony.com sales.
Its in their best interest to allow you to make a purchase from Sony.com immediately. Remember, most applying for this card are at the Sony.com site, and they dont want you to have to wait a week to buy from them. They want you to buy NOW, so as long as your application passes the initial screening, they'll let you buy with it right away and work out the details (like credit limit) later.
Its been a standard Sony thing for a long time, unrelated to this or any promo.
thanks for the info. I'm just wondering what the catch is on this deal. by my calculations you need to spend about $3300 in order to get $300 in statement credits. That's like a 9% Cash Back rate. Does anybody have experiences with this card? I've heard a couple rumors that Sony is a pain to deal with as far as getting your rewards so that has me worried.

I don't know what you mean by a pain. The $300 in "card credits" are just regular credits to your credit card account. They are subtracted from your balance on the card or (if you have no balance) are carried as a credit until the next time you make a purchase and applied then. Some people have reported luck in calling Chase and asking for a refund check if they have a negative balance, but YMMV.
If you are referring to the rewards program (which is separate from the $300 card credits), you can't have them in cash. You can redeem them in Sony Merchandise or gift cards to places like Sears/Kmart, Macys, Gap, ARCO/BP, Barnes and Noble, Pottery Barn, and about a couple dozen more. The Sony merchandise can be purchased from their rewards catalog (usually full MSRP) or you can buy it from any Sony authorized dealer with your Sony card and mail in a copy of the receipt -- they will credit your Sony card account. I've had no problem whatsoever redeeming points. Unlike some other points programs, points are always worth one cent.
If you want to go to their web site, you can earn a bunch more points by playing their Wheel of Fortune Bonus Round game and their Sony television trivia game and by answering their polls (the current poll is "Where do you play your DVDs?") and by building a wish list. If you have a Sony card, those points can be spent just like points you get from using your credit card.
But if you think that's too much hassle, just take the $300 in card credits and don't use the card again and forget about the rewards.

The questio is if it needs to be from Sony, or if any merchant will do.

The point is to get you to use the card enough to make it a habit, so it'll continue to be your primary card even after getting the promo credits. And if you are buying from Sony.com (thus the ability to make a purchase before you receive the card), there's a margin on the merchandise that can absorb some of the expense of the promo credit.
thanks for the info. I will be using the card a lot if I can be guaranteed 0%APR on all purchases for 12 months. The wording on the website has me a little bit confused on whether the 0% APR is only on purchases over $299 and/or only Sony purchases.

There you'll find the typical T&C sheet.
ok. I noticed in the app they ask for your work phone #. I'm debating about applying because I think my boss would be annoyed if I put his # down on a credit card app, and even more annoyed if they actually called him.
TrueValue said: do they actually call your work #?They will if you run up a large balance then stop paying. That's why they want to accumulate as much contact info as possible. They aren't going to call up your job just to say hi.

"Your first single sales receipt purchase equal or greater than $299 ("Qualifying Purchase") must be made by 3/31/09". It seems tricky for the "qualifying purchase" part. I did not find any explanation of what purchase are qualifying one.
one thing that is not clear to me is when the purchases start counting towards the first $1500 threshold. if you make a $50 purchase before you make a single $299 purchase, does that $50 count towards the first $1500 threshold? or do you need to make the single $299 purchase first?
TrueValue said: BrianGa said: hellyea81 said: any ideas for spending 3k in six months? my bills are never that high.Search Finance for the US Mint Coin deal.
gift cards might be another idea, but I'm not sure if they'll allow it or if it might count as a cash advanceIf you purchase something from a merchant, it is a purchase, period. It doesnt matter what you purchase.
The grocery store doesnt randomly decide to call your purchase a cash advance just because you bought a $250 gift card; how the transaction is processed/the network it is processed through is what determines the type of transaction. The ongoing fear of surprise cash-advances is mostly paranoia.
WombRaider said: Regarding the $1500, could I run transactions thru my buddies paypal? Then have him just pay me back minus the transaction fee?Sure. But it will cost you about $50 in fees to do so (and that's assuming he gives you the money back).

thinking of applying for this card soon, so I wanted to bump this

yes it appears the terms and conditions may have changed, but it's hard to tell. when you click on the OP's link there is a little "1" and "2" in superscript text (like an asterisk) on the page, which should lead to more details. However I clicked on the links in the lower right hand corner that says "pricing and terms" and "terms" but could not find more details about whether you have to buy a playstation, or whether it can just be any single purchase over $299
This brings up another question I'm wondering about credit card applications in general. When you click the apply button and your application officially zips through cyberspace, can they change the terms and conditions on you while you are waiting to hear if you are approved? If so, will they let you know the new terms and conditions in real-time?
does anybody have experience applying for this card? what FICO scores are needed and what current utilization on your credit card is too high?
to receive $300 bonus offer must apply by 2/28. Do you think Chase will extend the offer beyond that?

Is there a time limit for the $300 credit after you spend $3000? 6 months from activating the credit card? I am assuming the $3000 does not have to be Sony products, right?
1st $100 credit after first single purchase of $299 2nd $100 credit after $1500 in purchases in first 3 months 3rd $100 credit after $1500 in purchases in 2nd 3 months

see following link for someone's personal experience. It looks like you dont even have to buy Sony product to get the first $100

I believe that for 3rd $100 credit, you don't need to do $1500 charge in 2nd 3 months. You can do it in first 3 month. The fine print says for 2nd $100 you need spend $1500 in first 3 months, for 3rd $100, you need spend another $1500 within 6 months anniversary. So literally it should be fine you spend the 2nd $1500 in first 3 months period.

thanks for clearing that up. Do you happen to have the card? I was never quite sure if this deal keeps changing during the promotion.

Yes. I have the card. I got it about 1.5 months ago. I have got the 2nd $100 and am trying to get the 3rd $100 ASAP. Although I am not 100% sure whether they're changing the deal, but from what I've observed, it seems that they only changed the application link a few times. For the T&C, it keeps almost unchanged. Again, this is from what I observed, I don't guarantee it.

Try to get into this card with the good deal for a product you are looking. I have applied for this card for DSLR-A200K camera. They have offered this camera for $317 with $100 Cash Back after the purchase. $200 credit after spending $3000 in 6 months.
I did not get the approval immediately. I have had to wait for a month to get the card. Though the camera deal date is expired, as soon as i registered sonyrewards showed me the camera for $317. Apparently one needs to apply for the card by the deal expiry date. Sonyrewards will honor the price for 45 days after the approval of the card. I got the camera 2 weeks back. I am still waiting them to charge my credit card and $100 credit. Now, i am spending first $1500. Hopefully i will spend $3000 in 6 weeks and get $300 Cash Back. That will make the Camera free.
You can also register for 5 Sony products and accumulate 2500 rewards points.By using these points one can participate in some activities. There are some petty activities to accumulate more pints but they might not be worst your time. I have used $1500 points to buy the camera and got it for $299. After spending $3000, i will have close to 4000 rewards points which can be used to by gift card.
There are some threads in SD where some guys are accumulating points and getting some gift card with 40% discount.
rustum, very interesting info, thanks. I didn't know about how the rewards points worked. One of the reasons I thought they changed the terms and conditions mid-promotion is that I thought that the original offer had 0%APR on purchases for 12 months. Are you getting 0%APR on purchases?
I hate to bump an old thread but has anybody seen a current offer like this? The links in the OP now lead to a worse deal where you just get a $50 card credit.
