The terms on this link do not say the initial purchase has to be a Playstation from Sony, it just says "Your first single sales receipt purchase equal or greater than $299 ("Qualifying Purchase") must be made by 3/31/09". The Playstation is seemingly just an example of something you *could* buy to meet the requirement.
I am confused about whether the $299 to get the first $100 statement credit has to be spent at the Sony website, or can it just be spent on anything anywhere as long as it is a single purchase over $299?
Glitch99, when you click on apply on the website for the 2nd offer, this is what it says:
"write down your new account number, CVV2 and expiration date and/or print the application confirmation page, as you will need this information register your card and make your first one-time online qualifying purchase SonyRewards.com before you received your card in the mail"
so does this mean you will not even receive your card in physical form until you make a qualifying purchase at Sonyrewards.com?
It's confusing, and the fact that the statement is full of grammar errors makes it more so.

Its in their best interest to allow you to make a purchase from Sony.com immediately. Remember, most applying for this card are at the Sony.com site, and they dont want you to have to wait a week to buy from them. They want you to buy NOW, so as long as your application passes the initial screening, they'll let you buy with it right away and work out the details (like credit limit) later.
Its been a standard Sony thing for a long time, unrelated to this or any promo.
thanks for the info. I'm just wondering what the catch is on this deal. by my calculations you need to spend about $3300 in order to get $300 in statement credits. That's like a 9% Cash Back rate. Does anybody have experiences with this card? I've heard a couple rumors that Sony is a pain to deal with as far as getting your rewards so that has me worried.

I don't know what you mean by a pain. The $300 in "card credits" are just regular credits to your credit card account. They are subtracted from your balance on the card or (if you have no balance) are carried as a credit until the next time you make a purchase and applied then. Some people have reported luck in calling Chase and asking for a refund check if they have a negative balance, but YMMV.
If you are referring to the rewards program (which is separate from the $300 card credits), you can't have them in cash. You can redeem them in Sony Merchandise or gift cards to places like Sears/Kmart, Macys, Gap, ARCO/BP, Barnes and Noble, Pottery Barn, and about a couple dozen more. The Sony merchandise can be purchased from their rewards catalog (usually full MSRP) or you can buy it from any Sony authorized dealer with your Sony card and mail in a copy of the receipt -- they will credit your Sony card account. I've had no problem whatsoever redeeming points. Unlike some other points programs, points are always worth one cent.
If you want to go to their web site, you can earn a bunch more points by playing their Wheel of Fortune Bonus Round game and their Sony television trivia game and by answering their polls (the current poll is "Where do you play your DVDs?") and by building a wish list. If you have a Sony card, those points can be spent just like points you get from using your credit card.
But if you think that's too much hassle, just take the $300 in card credits and don't use the card again and forget about the rewards.

The questio is if it needs to be from Sony, or if any merchant will do.

The point is to get you to use the card enough to make it a habit, so it'll continue to be your primary card even after getting the promo credits. And if you are buying from Sony.com (thus the ability to make a purchase before you receive the card), there's a margin on the merchandise that can absorb some of the expense of the promo credit.
thanks for the info. I will be using the card a lot if I can be guaranteed 0%APR on all purchases for 12 months. The wording on the website has me a little bit confused on whether the 0% APR is only on purchases over $299 and/or only Sony purchases.

There you'll find the typical T&C sheet.
ok. I noticed in the app they ask for your work phone #. I'm debating about applying because I think my boss would be annoyed if I put his # down on a credit card app, and even more annoyed if they actually called him.

TrueValue said:do they actually call your work #?They will if you run up a large balance then stop paying. That's why they want to accumulate as much contact info as possible. They aren't going to call up your job just to say hi.
"Your first single sales receipt purchase equal or greater than $299 ("Qualifying Purchase") must be made by 3/31/09". It seems tricky for the "qualifying purchase" part. I did not find any explanation of what purchase are qualifying one.
