I saw this in the local newspaper tonight. I haven't called to confirm that the online application is valid for the $100 vs B&M, and I don't know if this is national, so please report back.
Terms: * Open any new personal checking account, establish a monthly direct deposit of at least $250 to your new account and receive a $100 bonus. The first recurring direct deposit must be posted to your account within 60 calendar days of your account opening date. Bonus will be credited to your account within 60 days after satisfaction of conditions. Offer valid for a new personal checking account opened from 4/27–6/19/09 with $100 or more from a financial institution other than Bank of the West. Offer subject to change without prior notice and may be terminated or extended based on response. Offer does not apply to second or multiple checking accounts and/or existing checking customers. Limit of one $100 bonus per household per calendar year. To the extent required by law, Bank of the West will report the value of the offer to the IRS on Form 1099. Any applicable taxes are the responsibility of the account holder. All accounts are subject to the Banks standard terms and conditions and fee schedule. Discounts on loan rates with automatic payment from a qualifying checking account. Loans subject to credit approval.
† If Online Banking is accessed through any personal financial management software, a standard monthly service charge will apply. Free online Bill Pay available only on personal accounts.

No hard pull for me when I opened an acct a few months ago for a different promo. It took some arguing to get the bonus, though.

Does this bank allow to login & see your accounts instantly or you have to wait for a welcome pack in mail...? Thanks in advance for your help.

Some places like to skim off some fees for provided Quicken / MS Money / whatever other money management program files. I don't believe this has anything to do with your normal ability ot access the bank through a standard web browser.

My online application was cancelled and they told me to resubmit. They sent me a new link that doesn't refer to the $100 bonus. This is the new link:
Update: using the new link the application went through and was approved. This is my first account with BOW, so I'll be looking for the link to my other account (trial deposits) and see if the bonus is credited.

Exact same thing happened to me. They had already withdrawn the initial deposit, saying it will be re-deposited in my old bank account.

They didn't withdraw the money from my account. I provided them with the r/n and account number, but the funds are still there. I used a different account for the new app.

It doesn't seem to be very common. M & T Bank is the only bank I deal with that charges for Quicken .qfx downloads.
I do get the message, although they withdraw money from my account and now asking to reopen the account.
Let us know when your get bonus credited. Not sure this new link is eligible for bonus or not.

Like others, I had my original online application canceled. I've just re-applied online for free checking and was approved instantly. They used Chex-Systems-like questions to confirm my identity, so I guess there won't be a hard pull. The $100 bonus *is* mentioned in the app: It's at the end of the fee schedule! Two options for initial funding: ACH or check mail-in; no CC funding. The ACH account must be confirmed through trial deposits with one matching withdrawal (keep that withdrawal in mind if you fund from a savings account or MMA!). I'm looking forward to the bonus!

here's my experience opening the account at a branch...
i went to a branch nearby around lunch time. the advisor there was trying to get me set up for the interest checking account by not telling me the free checking account option upfront. then after i insisted on the free checking account. she said there's an integrated savings account coming with the free checking account AND it requires an additional $5 to open. at that point, i just wanted the whole thing to be done with asap so paid her $5 cash with the $100 check to open the account/accounts.
i think it's better to do it online and avoid all the hassle...

Mine went right through, but their website is down until 5/18 for establishing online banking. I've got my check card (yesterday) and PIN (today).
you can close the account without even calling. I sent a request for closure and included the SSN and DOB. They responded.
they said: As you instructed, we have issued a request for account number 0030xxxxx to be closed. The account status should reflect closed within five business days.
