I thought I'd revive the archived thread that tells what banks do and don't do hard pulls when opening a checking and/or savings account.

It might be especially relevant for people who are interested in doing the bank bonuses for opening an account.

Everyone please feel free to contribute!

If you KNOW that a credit report is not pulled, that also helps.

  • 1st USA Bank - Hard pull from TU

  • ING Direct Bank - Hard pull for ING Electric Orange Checking Account

Chase pulls TU for new account holders.

BOA does a hard pull when you open in branch, even if you already have a CC with them. Don't think they do a pull if opened online.

I didn't get one when I opened a Chase checking online last July. I have a Chase credit card at that time though.

Fidelity credit cards --issued by FIA-- do a hard pull. Forgot to ask which agency 6/09.

Ing didn't do a hard pull on my savings account, but then again, I opened my first Ing account several years ago...

Hard pull and chex for wells fargo. Soft pull and chex for capital one.

According to this article, the following:

hard pulls for
Ally Bank (formerly GMAC)
HSBC Direct
Etrade Bank

soft pulls for
American Express
Ing Direct (savings)

I'm pretty sure E*TRADE does NOT do a hard pull for their online savings account.

I updated QS to show that sometimes BofA does two hard pulls when opening one account. It happened to me, and I've seen reports of it happening to others too.

I just opened a GMAC account in April (right before they changed to Ally) and there was no hard pull.

I'm also pretty sure I didn't get one for either E*Trade or HSBC Direct, but it was a few years ago when I opened them.

Anyone know if Pacific Resource Credit Union (in California) does hard pulls?

Thanks

Folks ,
Could someone please hell me here with the terminolgy used. What are hard pulls, soft pulls and chex as used in this post? Thanks.

Hard pulls - The banks pull your credit report in a way that shows up as a "hard credit inquiry". Usually you get this when you apply for a credit card, mortgage, car loan. Hard pulls hurt your credit score, at least for a few months.

Soft pulls - The banks pull your credit report but you are the only one who sees that. No other creditor pulling your report should be able to see a soft pull. Soft pulls do NOT affect your credit score, good or bad.

Chex - Banks usually make an inquiry on ChexSystems, a credit bureau for banks. It shows how many banks you've tried to open accounts at. Too many ChexSystems inquiries, and a bank may turn you away (for various reasons -- you might be a check kiter, a fraudster, a money launderer, or less excitingly, someone who's not going to be profitable and won't stick around -- in other words, just there for the opening bonus or high interest or whatever benefit they're offering at the time).

anyone have any experience with any of the follow banks?

California Bank and Trust
Cathay Bank
Union Bank of California
Keypoint Credit Union
East West Bank
Comerica Bank

NASA Federal Credit Union - hard pull Equifax 7-2007 (just fell off my report 8-2009)

Two more points:

M&I (Marshall & Ilsley) was going to do a hard one and let me walk out without opening a checking. I remember a few years ago they were going to pull a hard one just to open a safety deposit box.

Associated Bank (branch mgr.) said they would only pull Chex. I may test it out to get their $50 bonus, and will report.

Community National Bank - hard pull Experian 8-2009

thank you for the link slc39.

I have something to add: Wachovia free business checking. No hard pull. Chex system pull.
