That went from OCD to CHEAP/PARANOID real fast. I'm OCD because I: 1) keep an extremely detailed, elaborate excel spreadsheet, which I update on payday 2) keep a flow chart projected out 3 years with each month's debits and credits to know how long until I will have $X saved 3) always tip so the final amount is an even number 4) make a certain number of stock trades and have several accounts to maximize my executions per commission$ I can relate to organizing my currency and +/- account for my expenditures over the last 2 years. I'm pretty sure what started all of this was Staple's FA52R (Free After 52 Rebates) Acer Laptop we all did in 2007. Honestly. The economy hasn't been the same since. |

I got 3 (2, 3, 10). However, in the spirit of each point, I should have probably gotten closer to 11. Here's why I didn't qualify for the others: 1- Why would a cashier give me bills and coins back? Within recent history, I've used cash for approximately 1-2 US transactions per year, so not enough for me to notice the difference. 4- Since interest is compounded daily, it is difficult to remember the number of cents in my accounts each day. 5- Living in the twenty-first century, I don't receive paper copies of most financial records so I don't have anything to throw out. However, I never delete them from my computer. 6- Why would I owe someone money? If I owe them money, that means I must not have paid for it with my rewards credit card and I should slap myself. They should owe me. And yes, I expect exact change when they pay me. No rounding down and I don't give change. If they don't want to pay with exact change, that's their prerogative and I'll be happy to accept their favorable rounding. 7- What is a stamp? Why would I pay for one? Why would I have a cable bill? Cable is a waste of money. Since the advent of online billpay, stamps are a waste of money. If, however, for some awful reason I did need to pay for one in a similar situation, I'd certainly be splitting the cost. 8- What is a change jar? Why would I have one? See 1. However, in the odd situation that I need to deposit cash, you bet I count it beforehand. 9- WTF? Why would I have a $20 bill? When my money starts out in savings, why would I transfer money from savings to savings? Hiding money in the underwear drawer means it isn't earning interest, which is bad. |

This is a fun thread, interesting answers. 2. Yes (and I also have been known to iron my bills) 3. Of course. 4. Yes 5. Most of my financial records are records of my businesses. Some of those go back 30-plus years. And yes, I go through them from time to time - every few years. 8. Yes, I count everything before I deposit it. Who doesn't? 9. Well, yes; I have kids so I keep some $ hidden where they can't find it. If I forget where I hid it, I just ask the kids - they know everything. 10. Yes. As someone said, it's my money! |

2, 3, 4, 8, 9 I'd say I qualify as OCD under the OP but the FWF specific lists pertain to me more. I am just now starting to relax on micromanaging my finances. |

tripleB said:I am taking it upon myself to create a new top 10 list to make this thread more applicable to the average FWFer.
1) You use Rewards Credit Cards for everything, even when you have the cash available to pay immediately.
2) You shuffle through your wallet to find the Reward Card that gives the most rewards per purchase. If you accidentally left that "correct" card at home, you hold off on the purchase until you have the "right" card.
3) You know the exact balance of any reward points on all your cards and know exactly how many dollars you need to spend to earn the next redemption.
4) You begin an unsolicited 10 minutes conversation on Rewards Credit cards with your friends when you notice them purchasing things with cash or non-rewards cards. Included in this conversation is at least one back-door method of obtaining credit union eligibility for something like Penfed.
5) You ensure ALL of your credit cards are using the same PIN number for cash advances, even though you have NEVER taken a cash advance from an ATM and never plan to. You panic when you find a new credit card does not allow you to set your own PIN.
6) You have the CCVs of each card memorized so that when a cashier looks at the back of the card and is unable to read it, you recite it from memory.
7) You have all your credit card accounts arranged neatly into Yodlee by subtype: Rewards, 0% BT, Emergency.
8) You havnt paid for anything in cash in many years and never plan to use cash ever again (excluding H&B purchases).
9) You have organized the due dates for each Credit Card billing statement to maximize their efficiency. For example, Schwab 2% rewards are given at the end of the month after the cycle closes. Thus you arrange the cycle closing date to be the 28th so that you get the rewards in 2 days. If the cycle close date was the 1st you would have to wait 30 days to get the rewards.
10) You find yourself explaining maximizing reward card usage to people who dont care and stop yourself halfway through the conversation when you realize they arent listening. Oh Crap! 10/10 TripleB is a visionary! |
