Why YMMV? The offer email had some verbiage about offer being available only to those who received the email. But since the code and the offer link seem to be generic, I think there's a chance it'll work even if you didn't receive it.
You've got the Card; now, get 5,000 bonus points! As a valued Sony Card member you're eligible for this special bonus points opportunity*:
Spend $1,500 or more on your Sony Card from July 1, 2009 through August 31, 2009 and get 5,000 bonus points!
Getting there is easy; just use your Card for everyday purchases like gasoline, groceries, summer vacations, and Back to School items. You can even earn points for the bills you have to pay every month by setting up automatic bill payments with your Card!
To be eligible for this special opportunity, follow these simple steps:
1. Go to www.sony.com/sonycard/summer2009 2. Enter offer code ->SCSummer09<- to enroll 3. Use your card for everyday purchases from July 1, 2009 through August 31, 2009
~$50 in bonus points for spending $1500? That's only 3.333%, and there are cards that will give you as big (or bigger) of a bonus for spending either nothing, or a far smaller amount. Not worth it...

I'll pass.
Yeah, careful with this one. They had a similar offer about two years ago, generic code, would not budge on rewarding points unless you received the mailing. CS wanted you to mail in physical mailing, etc. It was a whole lotta stupid.

Extra 3.33% equates to 4.33 points per dollar which isn't a bad deal.
If you use this in place of a 1% card, it equates to 3.33%.
Sony card already provides 1 point per dollar before the promotion.

Relevant FW thread: Sony 10k points/companion ticket offer I actually received the mailing for the above deal, but still had to hound them a bit to get my points. I recall many FWers who tried to hop on having not received the mailing, and most were DENIED.
So I'm going to play it safe and ignore this one, unless I get this email.

RushnRockt, it's a 3.33% bonus compared to a standard 1% card. Try to keep up.
May be you should keep up with what you quoted to begin with. There is the 3.33% there already mentioned as well as pointing out that Sony card starts off with 1 point per dollar reward. Your post added nothing and could be confused as meaning that Sony's card only provides the 5000 point bonus for $1500 spent and no standard reward.
why dont you guys just get the Sony Playstation card?
$100 for the first $300 you spend, then when you spend $1500 in the first 6 months you get another $100 credit, then another $100 credit for another 1500 in 6 months.
Works anywhere, don't need to buy a ps3 or buy on the Sony Store

Actually, the Playstation card requires you to buy a Playstation 3 from SonyStyle for the first $100 credit (source). The Sony card gives a $100 credit for any purchase from SonyStyle for $299 and up and then both cards give you another $200 in credits for $3000 worth of spending in 6 months.
These cards have changed several times over the past few months though, so the offer is highly variable.
And if you play the Wheel of Fortune and/or Sony Pictures Television games daily (answers on the Contests and Sweepstakes board), you get a 15% off discount on the items in the rewards catalog, and the equivalent of 20 cents every day - which can add up, dropping the cost of a $50 gas card down to 4500 points or less.

They recently stopped discounting all gift cards, so you have to pay full point value regardless of what bonus level you're at. It sucks considering you have to give points for shipping too.

Does anyone know if you have to spend $299 at SonyStyle.com? Can you just spend $3,000 and get $200 and ignore the other $100?

I really don't see what's so hard to grasp.
You spend $1,500. You get 1,500 points. You also get a 5,000 point bonus.
1,500 + 5,000 = 6,500
6,500 on $1,500 of spending = 4.33 points per dollar.
Just stick to your 1% card and net $15 on $1,500 spend if you still can't "keep up".
Thanks OP. Worked like a charm for me and I didn't get any special offer emails. I currently have around 68,000 Sony points and every little bit helps. I'm just gonna keep saving these and eventually get an extremely nice TV.
I'm pretty sure I can purchase a Sony product at BB or somewhere else on my Sony card and then just call the rewards center and they will credit those points towards my purchase right???
They have a bunch of nice items at the Sony store itself on-line but waaaay over priced.
you can redeem your points on anything Sony as long as you buy it from an authorized retailer (which is pretty much anywhere except those shady electronics shops in Manhattan)
Thanks OP - I use my Sony Rewards CC as my main credit card and didn't get that notice, so I basically got 5000 points for free. (Also saving up for a nice television).

No, it definitely does not require you purchase a Playstation from Sony Style. I just signed up for the Playstation card this month and received my first $100 credit buying regular things.
Here's the wording from the email I received after getting the Playstation Card:
-----
You've got the card; now, get up to $300 in card credits!
Now that you've become a valued PlayStation® Card member you're eligible to receive up to $300, total, in card credits. Here's how:
$299 on your PlayStation Card within 45 days of your account open date = $100 Card Credit An additional $1,500 on your PlayStation Card by your 3-month anniversary date = $100 Card Credit Another $1,500 on your PlayStation Card between your 3-month and 6-month anniversary date = $100 Card Credit
You will qualify and receive your first $100 statement credit after you make qualifying transactions totaling $299 or more during the first 45 days from account opening. You will qualify and receive your second $100 statement credit after you make qualifying transactions totaling an additional $1500 or more during the first 3 months from account opening. You will qualify and receive your third $100 statement credit after you make qualifying transactions totaling an additional $1500 or more during the first 6 months from account opening.

Can you confirm that you actually saw the points credited to you? Or are you just assuming that they will credit because you spent the money? Thanks.

Not yet - the fine print says it won't be credited till after the promotion ends on Aug 31. I can however confirm that they had a similar promotion about a year ago (extra points for money spent between certain dates), and they did deliver.
