Is there a benefit to waiting a month before or should I just downgrade it now?

Why bother, you can always get it downgraded to the non fee version a month before it renews.So that you have better chances of obtaining another Chase card in the future.

FYI they refused to downgrade me, I had to cancel. I called back twice, but same story
