Might want to fix the spelling (sires to sites) of the title so that a search finds the thread. Believe me I am not the grammar or spelling police, but thought you would want it to be found if searched.

The message I just sent to the moderators:
Moderators:
With OP's permission, could you please replace the Quick Summary of this thread with the Quick Summary from the archived thread, http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/finance/765803/m11196546/#m11196546, in order to save having to reconstruct the links? Thanks!
Amazon Conservation Team ($1/mo) - http://www.ethnobotany.org/ (No paper statements/letters, just e-mail confirmations so they still get benefits from $1 donations)

Thanks, SIS, for reviving this thread. Charitable donations are more welcome than ever in this economy.
You can set up recurring donations online or by mailing in a form provided on their site. You can have them charge your card or auto-deduct from your bank account (useful for those rewards accounts that require an auto-deduction). You can also comment online or on the paper form not to send you a confirming letter each month.
By email: "Is there a minimum acceptable amount for recurring automatic monthly donations?" "No, there is no minimum to donate monthly. Most people don't go below $5.00, though."
APEDF "develops programs to defend the human and civil rights of the African community". I don't know what their minimum donation is using auto-pay. Looks like the donations go thru PayPal, and it didn't choke when I tried $1.00/mo.
I added the links from the archived thread back to the Quick Summary (assuming a moderator approves my post). I viewed the HTML source of the archived thread and wrote a little script to convert the links to the right format.
I don't understand why archived threads are so separated from regular threads on here. Why doesn't FW allow a new post to be made to an archived thread (automatically unarchiving it)?

Not a charity, but someone claims he has some data stored in Amazon S3 and is being charged $0.05/month for the storage.

Just tried $1.00 and it was rejected. In fact, quite a few charities which previously accepted $1.00 / monthly according to the Quick Summary have increased their monthly acceptable amount.

Not sure if I'm just making too many small updates to Quick Summary, but the dollar amount for SHARE and V Foundation of $1.00 should now be replaced with $5.00. Also, here's a Charity Navigator 4-star rated one which accepts recurring $1 / month (as of now): https://support.bcrfcure.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=14. It's part of the list "10 Charities with the Most Consecutive 4-Star Ratings."

Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights no longer accepts $1.00 monthly donations.
One thing you guys can do is set a reminder on your phone or something to tell you to buy $1 worth of gas and have it do that to you every month.. Or if you have a car that needs you to do 12 purchases a month, when you're at the gas station, you can make 12 separate purchases by purchasing $1 worth of gas each time.

Cheapoking said: That's the best way to kill a deal. Nice proposition... The decline of yields for Reward Checking accounts (RCA) has many reasons besides people making $1 transactions. It's been discussed thoroughly in the appropriate thread, but *all* rates, not just RCA rates, have been in decline for some time. An FI can close an individual's account at any time or even give them a preliminary warning if the FI doesn't like how the person is using the account. Some FIs already do this.
Banks offering RCA's are dead on looking for two things from the customers:
1. How many transactions are they making during the cycle.
2. What type of transactions and how much are they actually spending.
Making 10-12 transactions (usually the bear minimum), and each of those for $1.00, leaves no room for any bank to sustain the rates at which they offered the RCA. It has been clearly posted/documented here, of where certain banks will close your accounts, by monitoring 1, and 2 above.
At the least, and to fly under the radar, I suggest to stay away from the usual suspects; $1.00 transactions, will kill the deal.
Cheapoking, there is nothing wrong with setting the autopilot, just to make sure you meet the requirements, and using the card, on occasion, for those accounts you want to make sure stay opened.
$1/mo accepted. 4 Stars from Charity Navigator. Researches and lobbies for drug/chemical standards.

Bump in case they're still archiving Finance threads. Anyone know what the decision was? I now have 3 cards and want to keep this an active thread (yes, I know some of you have many more cards....)

There is a site that offers lots of cheap, even under $1, stuff from China with free shipping. Don't know how they do it. Don't think these folks are pioneering quality control in China, but there is a lot for the stocking stuffer. www.DealExtreme.com.
Would be curious to see how many people tried this strategy using primarily the $1 donations, and if their accounts are allowed to stay open. If you could share what bank you use that would be beneficial as well.

At least my currently active RCAs have documented that they would be unhappy to see only minimal transactions to meet their requirements, and want the accounts used as primary checking accounts. I think the automatic monthly charges to charities idea is still good, but since I give $X to charities each year anyway, I'll do some for more than $1 and vary the monthly amounts for different charities. I'll mix those up with other transactions to show broader usage of the accounts.
So for me, the automatic donations to charities is still a good approach, but not a complete one, and not at the $1 dollar level, at least exclusively.

I agree!
Well then thank you, I take the small credit.....I'm back at managing now 3 RCA, I was passive for the last 6 months or so with only 1. Have not had any problems in the past (I used to manage up to 6 at one point in time), making transactions and meeting all requirements w/o having to empty my wallet nor doing anything out of the normal, yet getting the APY as per disclosed by the banks.

I find a problem...if you normally don't give donations, then why would you? IF i donate $12 in 12 transactions per month, that's $144 per year. I get $83.33 per month interest; the $12 lowers my rate to 3.424%. Even itemizing on ScheduleA for yearly taxes will not benefit that much. But, I guess if this is your 2nd/3rd RCA at max $25k, this small donation doesnt matter in the long run. Sad part-- the charities are only getting ~60-75%; their merchant bank, MC,VI,or other, and issuing RCA bank are getting the rest.

That's true. If you just use the card for normal transactions, then as long as they average under $10 you are coming out ahead vs. just spending extra money (in terms of lost CC Cash Back).
MikeR397 said: nk42 said: You can go to cvs or your local grocery store and go to self checkout and buy 12 $1 things in seperate purchase ??And what if you are managing 10 HYC accounts with 100 purchase requirements per month? If you can quickly spend the dollar without a significant time investment, the $10 lost to achieve a much higher HYC rate of return is usually a de minimis loss, putting you ahead of what you'd be earning in a HYS account with a lower interest rate.
Besides, giving to charity is the right thing to do. It's a win-win. (Except for the CC company)
