Key Privilege checking requires $25k minimum balance. The 1350 retails at $300 so expect $75 in extra tax (from 1099-INT) and you won't want to leave the $25k on that checking account (low APY) so expect another $25. So total cost is about $100 for the 1350.

For the nuvi 1200, retail is at $200 so only about $50 in tax due. And no minimum balance on account so you wouldn't have to close the account right away and can avoid the $25 fee. So total cost is about $50 for it.

The 1350 has lane assist, larger screen, and speed limit display is addition to the 1200 regular features. Same maps and TTS for both.

Key Privilege checking requires $25k minimum balance; but the monthly fee is waived for the first three month.

From my past experience with iPod Touch and Garmin Nuvi 265WT, key usually send out gift within 30 days of meeting the requirement. I have avoided paying the monthly fee in past by using the first three month effectively.

If you open the account, try to meet all the requirement within 15-20 days; so that they send out the gift early. Once you get the gift - request them to convert your privilege account into FREE CHECKING ACCOUNT. Keep the free checking account for another few months to meet 6 month requirement to avoid Early Closing Fee.

So you jump through hoop after hoop, and they may send you the model you want, sometime next year. Yawn.

This is a good deal. I did it for the IPod. And they come thru.

Don't they send out a 1099 too?

I got a Garmin 205W from them recently and it was sent very quick. BEWARE OF THEIR FEES!!! I got nailed for $150 in fees from them. They are also unwilling to negotiate fees. If your statement gets returned to them they cahrge you! $10 or $20. I don't remember. $32/ over draft, after 2 over drafts it goes up to $37. They also charge you $28.50 every 5 days the account is negative. There are many more fees. I got hit with an overdraft. I went to the ATM and withdrew some $. Turns out I was $0.85 short so they charged me $32 even though I parked my car immediately after leaving the ATM to return the money (after seeing the negative balance on the receipt). I have a $6500 overdraft on my credit union account and got used to not having to watch my money so closely.

I admit I messed up. I do think their ATM should warn you it is going to overdraft you and ask you to accept it before it dispenses the cash. I would rather be rejected. Anyways just be warned that they hope you will mess up and when you do you no longer have a "free gps". They also do not notify you that you are overdrafted except for by mail. That way you have assessed at least one $28.50 fee before you get in. I also paid overdraft fees for $2.50 over on a gas purchase and another one for buying my wife an ice cream in the gas station. Irresponsible to not watch my bottom line I know. Irresponsible of the bank to charge a new customer so much they leave also. Why else would they have to lure a new customer in for a "free gps". IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT LIKELY IS.

Edit: Oh yeah as mentioned above they have a $25 fee if you close you account before 6 months. RIP OFF! It is a good deal though if you are very careful.

Thanks Patelji... I haven't had an account there for over a year, so I think I can do this again. I'll call up my old branch and verify. My old iPod from KeyBank is still going...

Or better yet, once you get your debit card in the mail just go to the branch and have them turn off the -$10 authorization limit they assign to all new debit cards automatically. Or is it the automatic overdraft limit they assign... dangit. I've worked for 3 banks over the past 10 years, and I'm getting them confused in my head. I can't remember if Key allows your debit card to go negative, or you checking account to go negative, or both.

You get 3 free months of the KeyAdvantage account. So after 85 days, switch it to the Key Express Free Checking account -- any banker should be able to do this with a simple form. Problem solved.

You are opening up Checking Account to get free GPS -

SO WHY IN THE WORLD YOU ARE USING THE ACCOUNT FOR OTHER THINGS. Just make the required transaction and forget about that account until you receive your GPS. Once you receive your GPS, call them and ask them to convert your account to FREE KEY EXPRESS CHECKING.

This is what I did when I requested iPod Touch and 265WT GPS from them.
I am now waiting for to open another account with them when they offer upcoming iPod Touch during Thanksgiving time.

Offer not valid for CA? I get this when I put my zip:
We do not offer this product in your area. You can edit your location or visit www.KeyDirect.com for information on products available in your area.

How are ppl getting around this? I coldnt apply for the previous offer due to similar issues.

Between me, my wife and daughter we have had zero problems. If you cant manage your acct you should not have a checking. Maybe you should just have a credit card. We dont have a overdraft protection

Sent you a PM.

So, I have a question for the group:

Can I open account with old address in one of the eligible states and then immediately do change of address to the current address in non-eligible state?

Would that work, what are the ramifications if any.

Should have sent you the PM...

This is the way folks have been participating.

No one mentioned the Key Privilege Select Checking, minimum open deposit is only 25 bucks...all fees are waived first three months and you are only charged an early closure fee of $25. This account will get you the Garmin 1350. is there a downside to this account I am missing?

thanks a lot, I should have thought of it

will give it a shot. Fortunately, I was in OR before so it was a non-issue then.

IIRC the only difference is minimum balance requirements: $25k in privilege, $100k in privilege select. And the privilege select refunds unlimited ATM fees, whereas the privilege refunds up to $6.

But if you're just going for the offer and not wanting to use this account, it doesn't really make a difference.

If you have a significant amount on deposit with Key already (but not in a checking account) or you have a mortgage or a home equity with key, it makes sense to get privilege/privilege select because you probably meet the minimum balance requirements already.

For this offer though, the minimum balance restrictions don't matter right? The Key Privilege Select Checking to get the higher end Garmin requires 100 grand minimum balance ($25 opening deposit) or you get charged monthly maintenance fees. However, monthly maint. fees on this account are waived for 3 months. Then, early account closure is only $25....I would think the early account closure and then the fee for the card is more than worth it for the higher end Garmin.

I think both Key Privilege AND Key Privilege Select both get the high end one, and the Key Money Market and Free checking accounts get the low end ones.

In the past, one of my friend in VA used his old address of NY to open the account and later called him to change his MAILING ADDRESS not the original address so that he can receive all the papers at his VA address. It worked for him and actually, this is the suggestion provided to him by one of Key CSR.

For the people that have opened a acct. Is there a option to fund the new acct. with a credi card?

Donedealzz said: For the people that have opened a acct. Is there a option to fund the new acct. with a credi card?

No, You can not fund the account with Credit Card. You can use EFT from other bank account.

No, You can not fund the account with Credit Card. You can use EFT from other bank account.

um...yes you can...and I just checked my cc account and the charge just posted.

How did u do it? Don't u need routing number and acct number. Where do you enter CC number??

patel99 said: How did u do it? Don't u need routing number and acct number. Where do you enter CC number??
Why RED, just asking a question because I did not know that you can fund the bank account with CC.

I participated in Last year's IPOD promo. I don't exactly remember which date I opened the account. But I think it was around this time last year and I closed the account in Feb-2009.

Am I eligible for this promo? Should I go ahead and try for this GPS anyway? What do you guys think?

So I filled out the online application form for "Key Privilege Checking" last night... how long does it take them to actually fund the account (I gave them routing & account nos. for another account), send the cards, etc.?

PS - it said that if you funded the bank account with a Credit Card it would be treated as a "Cash Advance" by your credit card company, which seems right (bank doesn't want to pay 3% to Visa/MC just to fund your account).

I'm confused by the wording "Automated payments exclude Key Bill Pay". So how are you to make an automated payment without using Key Bill Pay? Is Key Bill Pay a different service than the "make a payment" tab on your account?

Does this mean that direct deposits from a linked bank account will not qualify as a direct deposit, and only the following qualify?

Direct deposit transactions are limited to: payroll, Social Security, pension, and government benefits.

Don't do it. They will reject it if you had Key Bank Account in past 12 months. You can open the account in someone else name (wife, daughter, son, etc.) if you really want the GPS.

Automated Payment = Payment you make at your Credit Card, Utilities, etc's website using Key Bank account. So, If you have online credit card account opened, go to your credit card account, add key bank account as a payment account and then pay $100 two times on credit card's website.

Key Bill Pay = You make payment to anyone using Key.Com site using Key Bill Pay service.

In Past, I transferred some monies from my Online HSBC account to Key Bank account using ACH transfer. They accounted as Direct Deposit; however, make sure that your bank (not key bank) offers FREE ACH transfer. Sometime, they charge $20 for outgoing transfer.

So what kind of account everyone is opening? Express, Privilege, or Advantage?

dp1 said: So what kind of account everyone is opening? Express, Privilege, or Advantage?

It depends on what GPS you need.
Privilege requires $25000 balance requirement otherwise $25 fee. First 3 month of fee is waived. Last time, I opened this one and kept only $400 in the account for first three months because fee is waived for that period. I received the GPS within 1 month of meeting the requirement for it. Then, I am in process of converting the account to FREE Checking Account.

Is there any way to confirm once you have "met the requirements?" I opened the privilege account, made two $100.01 automatic payments from the American Express card site, opened a rewards account, and did a debit transaction. Something I'm missing? Should be receiving a GPS in the mail any day, right? .
