Closing a Chase CD

I recently moved to an area where the nearest Chase branch is well over 100 miles away. My Chase CD matures in the upcoming month, and a quick Google search reveals numerous complaints about the difficulty of closing a Chase CD over the phone (still ended up being auto-renewed, etc.). I'm guessing it isn't possible to do online.

Has anyone closed a Chase CD recently? Do I really need to drive to a Chase branch?

Do you have checking or savings with them? If you do, you could call the banker that opened the CD for you and ask them to transfer the funds to your other account. You should be able to see online instantly if the funds were transfered.

I closed a CD on phone and got the money into chase checking account today morning (this was a Wamu CD earlier but now moved to Chase)

Thanks! I also have a Chase checking account (converted from WaMu along with the CD). I'll try that.

I recently closed a Chase/Wamu CD over the phone. The representative asked a few verifying questions and closed the CD without any issues. The balance was transferred into the checking account and a pending transaction appeared online almost instantly.

I'm in the same situation- opened one of those wamu 5% guys when they were going under. I received a call from a chase personal banker trying to get me to come in so she could talk investment strategies. Told her "no thanks", but could she put an instruction on my account to have the balance transferred to my checking on maturity. She indicated I would have to visit a branch once it matured to do that. Thinking that she was just bitter that I didn't want to talk to her about investments, I called the old Wamu 800 number to try to request the auto transfer on maturity (which I was previously able to do when I had prior Wamu Cd's) and they also indicated that I'd have to visit a branch once the CD has matured (FYI... 10 day grace period).

For those of you who were able to get them to close it over the phone, did you have to push them on this or did you just get a CSR who actually spoke english?

First of my 5% WaMu CD's matured today, Called this morning and requested it be put into my Chase/WaMu checking account. Less than an hour later it was there and available. Went right over to Citi and opened another 2.25% 18 month CD. No loss of interest at all and very happy with how seamless it was

I'm kicking myself for not opening more of those 5% APY 13mo WAMU cds.

What number did you call? Was it the service number from the Wamu/Chase Checking statement?

If your Citi online rate is the same as the in-branch rate, why didn’t you just open the CD online or by phone? I think the Citi in-branch rate for my area is 2.30% APY. Any bonus rate for Citigold accounts?

Does chase do free transfers to non-Chase checking accounts?

Called 1-800-935-9935, was the number on the Renewal notice, Was then transfered to a specialist who did it in a matter of seconds. We don't have the 2.30% in MA, I checked last week when I did my first 2.25%. Branch is less than 5 minutes from me so easy to go in plus I need to open under my trust which can't be done online. Willing to take this so so rate because of how local it is and very quick and easy to open since they have my trust documents. No bonus rate but least gets me extra thank you points every month and extends the period I can be a Gold Customer. Have almost 3 months before my next 5% CD matures

Thanks for all the information. The Chase phone number matches the one on the Savings Account statements. I haven’t received any maturity notices yet. I’ve only received the $125 offer to “activate” my Wamu/Chase checking account. Not sure why the account needs to be activated.

Using Chase's ACH System they let you pull into them for free..but $3 for pushing out to another bank....though if you pull from Chase using an outside bank or brokerage, then of course, there would be no fee....

Wow, I can't wait to ditch Chase. As soon as my CD matures I'm going to close all of my accounts.

This was my exact experience. Called 800-935-9935 (off their Contact Us link on the website when I'm logged in), said I wanted to close a Chase/WaMu CD and move it to my Chase/WaMu Checking. She said she will need to transfer me to a specialist to complete my request. Ask me some security questions, then put me on hold, waited less than 2 minutes, came back introduce the specialist and asked me if I had any questions before she dropped from the call (I MUCH prefer warm transfers) and then said goodbye. The specialist verified what I wanted to do (first line rep told her), had my acct #s & everything ready. I said yes and she said if I use online banking it should be up immediately. I logged out of Online Banking and then back in and lo and behold, the transfer was a "pending transaction". I thanked her and ended my 5 minute call. This was on Wednesday around 3 pm Eastern.

EDIT to add: Wednesday was my maturity date. And the balance transfered to my checking was a few pennies more than the balance + uncredited interest listed for the CD in Online Banking.

I have one maturing on 09/02 and don't have a Chase checking account. So, I guess I either have to pay a $3 ACH fee or open a checking account???

if you don't have any other deposit account with Chase, you have no accounts for them to deposit into for you to either ach out or write a check....so obviously, you would need to open a checking account....Only other alternative is to have them snail mail a check to you...or have them close it at a branch and make up a teller's check....

The CD I closed by phone several months ago didn't have any problems. However....

My CD matured 8/18 and I called that day to xfer to savings account. They said it would take a couple of days. I noticed 8/24 that xfer had not occured yet. I was sick that day and so just called again instead of going into the local branch. They said they have a record of the request but said this time it could take up to 2 weeks from the request date. I expressed concern that the CD will roll over. They said it is not a problem since my request was in before the rollover date. I just checked and it is still not xfered yet. I guess I'll need to call again or go into an office to complain.

Do any banks allow you to transfer matured CDs to checking/savings accounts at same bank via automated telephone or online so that you
have control and don't have to depend on them?

Yes.

Yes.
WaMu used to allow you to close a matured CD online and pick which account to transfer the funds to. It was quite convenient.

Are we allowed to call the day before maturity to state that we want to close the account on maturity date?

How long is the grace period for Chase?

Grace periods seem to vary.
An old renewal notice for a Wamu CD mentioned 7 days to close it. The customer service represenative told me to call back after the CD matures when I tried to place an advance closure request.
A more recent renewal notice for a Chase CD mentioned 10 days. I have called to close the CD on the date it matured (didn't try calling in advance).

Chase is 10 calendar days.

Followup on my Chase CD that didn't get transfered for 2 weeks. Just called and apparently original telebanker didn't fill in the form correctly. 2nd telebanker didn't notice the mistake and assumed it took a long time to process. The current telebanker was confused why transfer had not happened yet. She checked with her supervisor who found the issue with missing info in the transfer form. Since it was their mistake, they said they will waive fee since CD is matured and initiate the transfer which should take 1 business day. So, to the OP who asked if it is okay to call to transfer CD. It should be okay. If it doesn't get process in a day or so after your call, you might need to call again but you don't need to go to a physical branch to take care of it.

You should be demanding that they pay 5% interest from the day of maturity till the day they transfer, Like you said, They admitted it was their mistake

My Chase CD is maturing on Sept 10th, and i want them to deposit the cash into my Chase Checking Account....I know you can do this by telephone....i was also wondering if you can also do it by secure e-mail from the online banking?

No

I'll just call then...thanks

i requested a check to be sent since i dont have a chase savings/checking account. its been 2 weeks still havent received it yet.. is this normal?

too bad you didn't have a chase checking account...all i had to do was call them on the day of maturity, and they connected me to the department that handles it, and they had the money in my checking account within the hour! I was totally amazed how fast it was.....

i would call them and ask them to see if the check had been mailed....might take a while to process when they mail checks to your home residence....tell them you were concerned about that it might have gotten lost in the mail, so you needed to know when the check was mailed to you....
