I am trying to open an online checking account. It asks me to answer some questions from my credit report to verify my identity . I answered one question wrong and it would not proceed. I tried again and same thing.

Now, I have figured out which question I am answering wrong , but when I try it a third time it immediately rejects the application. Do I have to wait a day or week before I can try again? Or I have been "blacklisted" for answering the questions wrong twice? Has a fraud alert been placed on my credit report by any chance?

You have probably been blacklisted for being a dumbass... Just kidding.

It sounds like the system worked, though. Would you want someone opening an account as you without a simple verification test?

I doubt there has been any fraud alert placed on your credit report. No fraud has been committed, thanks to the test.

Can you apply by phone? Oh, and take your time with those tests - know how much your mortgage payment is, who services your car loan, etc.

I hate those tests. Even though I know what's what, I still worry that just might be off by a few $$ or something.

Me too, the most recent one I took asked for my mortgage payment with answers in $5 blocks. I always round off the $ amt and had no idea, $5 is a bit ridiculous.

Depends on the bank. If you did it at ING then you're probably out of luck

I guess I'll wait a day or so and try again.

Pull your credit report. Use the data as it shows up in your credit report.

If you already know the question you've missed before, then just call the FI and have them verify you over the phone or to reset the online questionnaire.

Chances are they are asking you about mortgage payment, loans amount, addresses you've lived etc....only you should have answers to those.

Recently I was asked what street that I had lived on....none of the answers applied to me except possibly the answer of P.O. Box 223. I had P.O. boxes previously & had to look at my credit reports from 10 years ago to determine that I did in fact have that P.O. box #. How rediculous....who remembers there P.O. box #s after one has closed there P.O. boxes? And since when is a P.O. box a street name that anyone lives on??? So yes, one needs to be prepared to answer those questions that are not self evident as to the answer.

I had them ask me once if i once lived in X County, Y County, or Z County...

Problem was I lived in X and Y at one time... But there is only one right answer

I have never been asked a question with a correct answer to choose from. Almost a dozen accounts opened in the last two years and all my answers were "none of the above". Until Ally turned me down a couple weeks ago, must be that was the right answer.

PM me your info and I'll try it from my computer.

This is to prevent someone other than yourself is opening an account under you.

Are you sure it was you opening his account??

Another problem occurs when the credit info such as address or job info is wrong. Transunion has been the worse.

Just an update on this. I called the bank and they were most unhelpful. Basically saying tough luck and there is no way for them to 'unlock' me. So I then emailed the online people who developed the online bank account application. They said:

" You will need to work with the bank to discuss your information and to further troubleshoot. We apologize that we could not be more helpful; however, for security purposes we do not have access to this data to review and troubleshoot any further. "

I believe the system they are using to check the identity is chex ( sp? ). Never heard of them. Anyone got a website for them?

submit a traditional application.

Order your Lexis-Nexis report and all three credit reports...chances are the information was pulled off of one of those. Lexis Nexis request page can be found here.

A couple of years ago I applied for a US Bank checking account online. They opened it but closed it two days later. I called them up, and they wouldn't discuss the issue. After several more contacts, they told me I needed to apply in person at a branch, and that I could not apply online. A short time later I did go into a branch to open an account. No problems at all there. They liked me so much that they also opened a Visa card for me ($7,000 limit that is now $12,000) with the same soft inquiry they used for my checking account. The representative at the branch told me they also ran Chexsystems, and I had no problems there.

To this day I don't know why they wouldn't open the account online as they wouldn't even listen to me (they would never tell me why). Something spooked them. I remember in talking to one person on the phone before going into the branch that he did say there was a note in the computer in capital letters that said "DO NOT REOPEN!" which he has never seen before. Anyway, all I'm suggesting is if you can't open the account online and are confident that there should be no reason you can't have an account with them, just apply in person, as banks are less suspicious of fraud if you do.

These things always ask me about my student loans. The only way i know what the answer is to them is i have been asked it so much and luckily its the one that sounds federal (even now i don't remember the answer).
