Just received a mailer from Chase about the 4th quarter bonus categories - my offer is 3% on discount stores, electronics stores, and bookstores. Don't know that everyone will be offered the same amount; 3rd quarter there was a wide variance in the threshold required to earn the bonus amount.
Gave it a shot and got the message that the system couldn't enroll me. Then it took me to a page promoting a $20 statement credit and that one couldn't enroll me either.
back when they were giving me 3% on department store puchases, i questioned them why i didn't get 3% on stuff i was bought from Target. the answer was that Target was a discount store.

Would Dollar Tree, 99 Cents Only, or Big Lots stores be considered discount stores?

Usually Target (along with WalMart) is considered a discount store for credit card categorization purposes, not a department store. Department stores are stores in which you can shop and pay in various departments (i.e. Macy's, JC Penney, Sears, etc.)

got reply from chase freedom CSR
OFFICE MAX: Combination catalog Staples: Stationery Wal-Mart: Discount stores Wal-Mart SUPERCENTER(super WalMart): Grocery stores TARGET: Discount stores The Home Depot: Home supply warehouse
chase do not have a pre-compile store category, you have to provide them your own transactions to find out store category
can any one find out if fry's, Office Depot and best buy is electronic store or not?

I have two Freedom cards with last 4 digits* 1111 and 2222. I received two mailings with this offer, for cards 1111 and 3333. I don't have a card ending in 3333, even though the offer was sent to my correct name and billing address. Chase CSR is clueless and wants me to fax (fax!!?!?) copies of the offers. I don't want to spend too much effort on this since they're both primarily sock-drawer cards now. I checked my credit report to be sure there were no unexpected accounts or other unusual activity.
Has anybody else received this offer for a card with the wrong last 4 digits? Should I be concerned, or is Chase just totally inept?

Yes to the first question. Unsure about the second.
Man, lame. My Chase Freedom is just in the process of getting "upgraded" to Ultimate Rewards starting 10/31. I just got a mailer telling me about the 3% categories mentioned above, so I signed my card up on the website. After sign-up, the message says I'll earn 3% for every dollar I spend over $1500 in the quarter, with a $30 reward cap!
The mailer I got didn't say anything about the $1500 tier and the $30 reward cap. This makes this rotating 3% for 09 q4 essentially useless
Edit: mine says I'll get 3% CashBack on discount, computer/electronics, and bookstores, but only for every dollar I spend over $1500, subject to a $30 bonus cap.
I suspected they were going to have different purchase requirements for different people - they did this in the 3rd quarter too. I am really surprised at mine; most of my spending on this card is in these categories, and my confirmation page shows no minimum purchase amount to earn the 3%. So this will pay back for me, given as how this quarter includes Black Friday

looks like different deal for different people
you mention "every dollar I spend", so maybe they change your deal to 3% on all purchase over $1500, not just limit to 3 category?

I also got mysterious notice with a card last 4 digits I did not recognize. Computer would not take this data.
I suspect it is old card or card whose number was changed, but this should not happen.
Does look like different offers though, since offer did not arrive for all family members with cards.

Mine seemed to provide for all purchases, but limit of 3000 points. Used on qualify purchases it apparently provides for 3.3% since this seems to be in the 10/10 Exclusives program.
Fine print seems to state you can lose the offer if the rewards program is changed, so if they fnally upgrade the card as promised to the 3% on 5 categories, it looks like this offer and its points would be gone.

I received the same offer (/freedom42) with bogus 4 digits. Signed up with my real number and it was processed. Then two days later I received the same offer for my real number!

On a Chase Business Card, I get 3% on Office Supply Stores. Both Staples and Office Depot count in that category. So I doubt Office Depot will count as an electronics store.

For a former Chase Freedom card (3% back on top 3 categories) my last 4 digits was correct.
For two from Cash Rewards cards (5% back on EDP), the fliers had inccorect last 4 digits.
On a Chase Business Card, I get 3% on Office Supply Stores. Both Staples and Office Depot count in that category. So I doubt Office Depot will count as an electronics store.
thanks!

I have the 3% back on top 5 categories program (with chase checking account), and have not received a mailer regarding the "upgrade" plan yet.
However, just yesterday I received a mailer saying I can get 3% back on discount, computer/electronics, and bookstore categories from Oct-Dec if I enroll it.
I'm not sure if I should choose to enroll this Oct-Dec program, will my original 3% back on top 5 categories be changed into quarterly bonus categories program?
Or, are these just the extra categories I could qualify for the purchases since the original 15 categories doesn't have discount, computer/electronics and bookstore categories?

Is WalMart categorized as a "discount store"? In my transactions, it's listed as "(other)".

oh god, i can not believe what you said is true!!!!!
so i shop at my target some time June when there is bonus on grocery, so i email chase before promotion begin on Sept 27 inquire about the classify of this target, they email me back:"06/29/2009 TARGET = Discount store earns 1%"
now when i receive my new statement, i found out my Oct 6 transaction at same target almost at same check out place did not get bonus, they email back: "WalMart & Target transactions will qualify as long as they are properly identified. It could be possible that one WalMart may come through as a Discount Store and another might come through as a Grocery store. It's at the individual store level or based on the checkout lane. For example one lane by the grocery section could be classified as Grocery."
the check out lane i use last time on June is even more near grocery section! how can this time be qualify as grocery now?!
terrible chase, they just make the way you can not argue with them any more, they will say just because you go to the wrong lane!!
ahcool said: Will enrolling in this program negates your 3% reward on gas station/Drugstore/grocery?
you still have that option? chase stop my bonus program on grocery automatically

Target appears to be giving 6% back (advertisement scrolling at bottom of screen) when you link through the Chase site and use a Chase card. When combined with the 3% for discount stores. This adds up to 9%.
