I can't tell from your post: does your name match what's on record with the SS office? If not, an obvious next step is to contact the SSA and get it fixed.

Also, does your name match what's shown on your credit and ChexSystems reports? Again, if not, this could be the problem.

Both my father and I had the same problem the last time around. I was never sure what was causing it. It was easier to comply with the requests, even though they were significant. One thing I did learn is that you can submit an online utility statement even though they insist on mailed copies. Just white out all the markers that identify the statement as online before making the copy for Citi. If there was ever a stupid requirement, it is the insistence on paper statements when everyone is going paperless.

Make sure you are typing in the complete address correctly. When I tried opening a Wamu account for the bonus, I didn't include the "NW" on my address, since I never do anywhere else and it gets there fine, and it rejected me, saying it couldn't identify me.

They do a random soft pull for I.D. verification, which does not work if your credit reports are frozen. They also pull a Chex report. Make sure you're entering your personal information exactly as it appears on your credit reports, and your Chex report. And obviously, the listed personal information, including the address, should be consistent on all your reports, with no errors.

If funding by credit card, they only accept up to four cards, and one per account. It is not recommended to use a Citi credit card for funding either, because they consider it to be risky and suspicious behavior; and they've been shutting down a lot of accounts lately for similar reasons.

If you aren't trying to fund with a credit card, just go to the branch. Otherwise, check your reports, and keep in mind that if you were already denied, you will likely raise a red flag each time you re-apply, and will now likely have to fax the requested documents regardless, to open an account remotely.

Is there a source for the four cards limit>

Does anyone know how they identify themselves when calling? My wife has applications in for both a saving account and a AA credit card and there was a call identified as CITI bank for her. They would not say the subject, leaving it uncertain which it concerned or who to call back to provide whatever was needed. She wants to go by bank to provide needed information (she is paranoid about scamming phone calls), but you seem to imply that if it concerns the bank account they will not be able to take the credit card and treat it as a purchase (which can provide a few bonus points perhaps).
