but what if you open a new card, and then close it. Would closing the account allow you to apply for another credit card without hurting your chances?

Ex: You open a Juniper credit card account. If you tried to apply for a second Juniper CC account, your chances are weakened.

Now what if you close your first credit card account, and applied for another Juniper BIZ Credit Card account? Would it be as if you had never opened that first account?

Would it make a difference if the 2nd Juniper Biz CC was BankAtlantic's Biz CC? (Both are Barclay bank)

If you have a card with an issuer that you no longer want and want a different card with the same issuer, it would be better to call and see if they can simply convert your current card, which may save a hard inquiry, preserve your average account age, and be a smoother process on both ends.

Well I tried that, and they won't let me convert the card to a business card so that's why I wanted to see if closing the account would help biz card application.

Either the bank allows multiple accounts or it doesnt; your "chances" for a second account are either 0% (if they only allow one) or unaffected by the first account (if the allow multiples). Note, if approved your new credit limit may be affected by other accounts at that bank, and some banks may move existing limit to the new account instead of increasing your total credit available.

If Juniper/Barclays is the specific bank you are wondering about, you apply for the biz card and are either approved, or if denied you call in and ask to use your existing limit to create the new account.
