What is considered taxable when calculating the final price of a vehicle. I am considering purchasing a new BMW and realized that there are many fees that are added in to the price of the vehicle before tax. Can the dealer tax you for the documentation fee? MACO fee? Training fee? Advertising fee? I'm in California in case it matters.
The reasoning is, that with taxes here almost 10% and the fees totaling at least 1k, thats almost another $100 added to the price.

I just bought a 2010 Lexus and I have my sale contract right here in front of me. I live in CA and there is sizable Sales Tax.
Sales Tax (on taxable items in A throught H) Well item A. Cash Price of Motor Vehicle and Accessories B. Document Prep Fee C. Smog Fee- N/A D. E. F. Theft Protection N/A G. H. Surface Protection Product N/A
Depending on the series of BMW you are looking at a Gas Guzzler tax (M3 esp!)

That's interesting. I live in CA but bought a car out of state last year (from a dealer). The dealer collected no tax. When I went to register it in CA, I only paid 'use tax' (basically the used car version of sales tax) on the actual price of the car. They specifically excluded the $300+ in doc prep fees. AFAIK, sales tax is only on products, not services. You pay tax on parts, but not on labor when your car is repaired...I would think the same logic would hold for a purchase.
Don't forget that new car sales tax is deductible...
