Chase decided to change my rewards

So I have a Chase Freedom card which gives me 3% CashBack on Gas, Fast Food, and Groceries, which was really good since I spend a lot on those. I would also get a $250 check once I hit $200 in CashBack, so a $50 bonus for waiting to cash out my rewards. Needless to say, I liked this a lot. However, I logged in today and they changed by card to a Sapphire, with some lame reward points. I don't get any of the extras I listed above. I was pretty pissed and called chase to figure out what happened. They claim they sent me a letter telling me about the change, and if I wanted to keep my old rewards that I would have to call. I never received this letter. I asked to go back my old rewards. Customer service says not possible, I say let me talk to Manager, Manager says she can't do it. If it was possible for me to keep old rewards program, it is most likely possible to go back to the old program. I tell the Manager this, and she says they will put in a work order and will let me know by mail of the result. I think this was just a tactic to get me off the phone and I am going to get a letter in 2 weeks saying that they can't do anything. Basically my question is, what can I do? I am pretty livid about this, and if I don't get to go back to my old rewards program, I want to take some action. Aside from contacting the BBB or stop using chase, is there anything I could do to get my rewards program back, or some compensation? Thanks.

Yea, they switched me right at $180.

apply for a new chase freedom card?

OP, search for "chase freedom", there are several threads about this. Chase send letters about the change, although there are reports of people not getting letters. Some people were able to opt out of the "upgrade" to Sapphire, but not after the change already happened as far as I know.

Can't apply for a new Chase Freedom card since they don't do it anymore. Hence the "Upgrade".

Yea someone pointed that out in an earlier post. Wouldn't have opened up this thread if I realized it was a widespread issue. Obviously I didn't know this "upgrade" was happening until it happened. Which totally screws me over.

The credit card company (all of them not just Chase) has the right to change the Rewards Program at any time the want to...so putting in a complaint with the BBB will basically be a waste of time....it's even stated in the fine print when you originally applied or/and received your card.....

Most of the card companies are either reducing or changing their rewards in one way or another these days...so unless you find some other card that you like far better...you will have to basically "bite the bullet" and accept it.....if you want to have a credit card with them....

You may be able to switch to the new freedom, which is decent if you have a chase checking. It's 1 point/dollar, with a 10% bonus on points and 10 extra points per purchase. If you use your card for lots of small purchases, it actually works out pretty well as a reward card.

I don't see this new freedom on their website. I was just about to open a chase checking for the free $100, so it would be worthwhile. They told me on the phone there were no other cards...

Nevermind I found it. So why would they change me to a Sapphire, why wouldn't they just change me to the new freedom. This is obviously just a way for them to confuse people and try to save some money on rewards.

Nothing you can do except throw the card in a drawer. Just about every bank is killing their rewards programs these days. We had a nice little racket going on until about 6 months ago.

You should change the thread title to "I decided to ignore the letter Chase sent me." Seriously, just admit that you don't read every last piece of crap Chase sends you every week... no need to lie to us on FWF. I got the letter months ago, called the number and within 5 minutes I prevented them from changing my Freedom card to Sapphire.

You are better off contacting Triple B than the BBB, i.e., don't waste your time...

I do read every piece of crap from Chase that reaches me, but the particular piece of excrement that you imply everyone who was so-called upgraded must have received, that particular one did not. Get over the unwarranted assumption that the only way to miss some notice from Chase is through the customer's fault. Other ways come to mind, like notices never sent.

Yep cause I feel the need to lie to you. Or perhaps I am telling the truth and I do read everything that my Credit Card company sends me, since it can actually be important. Just because you don't read it, doesn't mean I don't. I also read everything my mortgage company sends me, utility company, city, bank, and basically any other big institution.

Can I call bullshit on you then?!?! According to chase, the $250 check program is "off their system" and there is no way to either "sign-up" for it or "go back" to it...

Yeah, but for people whose accounts haven't been changed yet, they still could be grandfathered in, at least for the time being.

I got my letter in May or June and the account was converted July 31. If I would have known I could have kept the same terms by making a simple phone call, I would have done that. Too late now.

It's obviously not off of their system. I just requested another $250 check for $200 in rewards last week. My freedom card is still paying extra rewards on my top five categories.
