The other day at work, my boss came to check up on how are we doing at work. My boss saw me with my big personal bag and wanted to know what is inside my bag.
I told him that it's my personal stuff so I declined to show him. He started to raise his voice and demanded to see what is in my personal bag. I didn't want to get fired so
I showed him inside my bag and he got upset and told me to leave for the day when he found out that I brought my personal computer to work. He does have a written note
at his desk that we shouldn't bring personal computer. I told my boss that I was going to check my computer during my 30 minutes break time. He sent me home for the
day and now I have to write a letter to the upper management to let them know what had taken place.
My question is: If I do get fired, because I had brought my personal computer could I talk to the Department of Labor and file complain about boss forcing me to
open my personal bag to check inside? I felt that he is like a Police Officer searching my stuff.
Also is it possible to get unemployement?
I did apologized to my boss but he is strict and I know that I messed up. I already had lost several jobs to to lay/off of the economy.
I hate to be out of job during this uncertain times.
Please anyone give me advice that if I am able to hold my job then I'm happy and I do respect my boss too and don't want to get him into trouble as well but
I'm beginning to wonder if some of these outlandish situations being posted here are "troll" type jokes.
Sigh... do you also have a big position in metals?
--- Metamor(phosis)face, if you are a real person and that is a true story, this is probably the wrong internet discussion forum for you, and you are probably going to be fired.

Why did you bring your computer to work? Why does your boss explicitly forbid that?
I'm not sure he "forced" you to open your bag. Did he say he'd fire you if you didn't? Threaten physical harm?
It doesn't sound good for you. My assumption based on your sketchy details are that there's a good reason for the policy and the boss had good reason to suspect you were violating it.
but one gives people the benefit of the doubt for a while.

And when you used it on your personal break, I am guessing you were going to use your works network connection, right? Attaching that computer to the network opens up a whole can of worms. Maybe all your software isn't legal, maybe there is a Trojan or virus on your computer. It is a pretty standard policy. Write a letter saying you misunderstood the policy in regards to being able to use it outside of work hours. Then wait and see. If you are a useful employee they will let it go (maybe with a written warning or something), if you are very easily replaceable, or the company is looking to slash jobs, well onto your next job, hopefully a little wiser.

Swallow your pride and take your indignation out on a fence or something.

Thank you for everyone's reply. I had brought my laptop computer and meant to use it during my break time. I will write the apology letter and let them know that sorry that I am with the situation. Also my manager was raising his voice and keep telling me to open up bag so I didn't want to disobey. But I will learn from my mistake and that whatever this outcome of this just had to grow as a person and still keep smiling and not become a mean person to others. I will let everyone know in few days of my outcome. I just don't have a lot of experience in this type of situation since it was the first time that this had happened and will be last time that I will let this incident to happen.

You're doing fine, but need just a little improvement. Good luck.
Yeah, suck it up, apologize and grovel like the wage slave bitch that you are... No offense
What a lame policy. Do you have to prove your cell doesn't have a wifi before you can bring it in the building... Using company wifi is one thing, but having your pockets and bags turned out is another.
I have always assumed that when I was on my employer's property and particularly during company time, they had the right to look into whatever bags I was carrying.
Yeah, there is probably something in your employment documents about them being able to search anything you bring onto their property. Chalk this up to a dumb mistake and start looking for a new job ASAP.
I'm reminded of the hillarious episode on Taxi wherein Louie departs from his job at the crooked office job he had and cleans out the office of all their stuff. Including the keyboards.
Beg for your job back. Don't do it again. Look for a better job.
The more you are worth to the company, the less the rules will apply to you.
As to unemployment, most states won't give you any if you are fired for cause. You might need legal advice (from a lawyer, not a FW member) on this one.
Good luck.

Get fired. Get on Unemployment - it should last about 1.5 years given our current administration.
Get TRAINING/degree in ANYTHING better than what you are in now ------------> Health Care.
Be grateful you boss assisted you in getting out of that hell hole.
Your state pays unemployment when you get fired?
In my state it is pretty hard for an employer to win unemployment claims, the employer has to have all of their ducks in a row and even then it is a crap shoot. A friend of mine fired an employee because he didn't show up to work for several days, but lost in the unemployment appeal process because he didn't document it well enough. If the OP didn't steal the computer from his employer or commit a felony while on the clock he probably has a decent chance of getting unemployment.

If your boss calls you in his office you can always fake a fight, be sent home as a work @ home employee and start an underground anti-consumerist organization that plays pranks on corporations
