I would like to know if people have rental car coverage in their auto policy?

What are the pros and cons of having/not having them?

If yes, whats the monthly rate charged by company for that coverage?

I currently do not have and thinking of taking it. Allstate charges 4/month.

Off topic but certain credit cards provide rental coverage for free.

Auto Rental Insurance
MasterRental® Insurance coverage (up to $50,000 per incident) is secondary coverage and is underwritten by Virginia Surety Company, Inc. Certain conditions, restrictions and exclusions apply. Not all vehicles and countries are covered. Details of coverage will be provided upon cardmembership.

I believe the OP is referring to rental car coverage to pay for the rental car if your car is in an accident.

Why dont you call your insurance agent to find out how much it's going to cost rather than guess its $4 per month or ask us how much it is?

We do have it. During a collision damage we gave the car to diamond certified repair center, which took almost a month to repair slight damage. The insurance company (Farmers) paid for the Hertz rental for the whole month. They had tieup with repair center and Hertz at the same location, so practically no paperwork. Its just $25-$30 increase in premium. So definitely worth it.

it is a good idea to take insurance that covers your rental car. Even if you are taking a complete coverage, there are some disadvantages. If you have a collision (rental car), then your insurance will take care of the damage but rental car company may charge your credit card for the number of days it takes to repair the car (loss of business), like 30$ a day ....or so..
Some rental car agencies might delay that repair and in that case you might have to pay for those days. This is not applicable to all insurance companies or policies. Each policy is different, so make sure you ask these questions before you take one. This is only a case !!! good luck

The coverage provided by some credit cards is only collision waiver...not liability

OP you need to clarify if you are talking about your car insurance covering damages to a rental car or the insurance paying for a rental car when you car is in the shop for insurance covered damage. These are two different things and judging by the responses it seems that I am not the only one who is unsure which one you are talking about.

There are situations where it makes no sense to get this insurance. My wife and I both live reasonably close to work and could take public transportation if we had to. We are in the city, so nothing is too far away. Since we have two cars, we could drop the other off at work should one of the cars need collision repair.

Let me clarify my question:

Its the "insurance paying for a rental car when the car is in the shop for insurance covered damage"

I think rental coverage is worth it. I recently had damage to my car from a pothole. The estimate came in at 2600 to fix it but Safeco came in and found scrap yard parts to lower it to 1600.

The problem though, is that it took about 3 weeks to actually get the parts taken off the salvage car, shipped to my city, and installed... and I had to pay for the rental car in the mean time. I think the insurance company would have a much bigger imperative to pay the claim off and get it repair quickly if they're on the hook for the rental car.

Maybe I didn't understand properly but did you end up paying the $1600 or did Safeco? If you paid it fine but I wouldn't let my insurance company get away with putting a salvage part on my car if they're paying for it.

Rental Reimbursement is one of the most profitable lines of coverage that insurance companies write. I'm sure you can get many anecdotes of people buying the coverage, then using it and recouping more than the premium they paid. But the premium you pay for Rental Reimbursement is mostly profit for the insurance company.

It's generally almost all profit because they get excellent rates from rental fleets. I don't carry it. In MD, UM insurance covers rental cars in case you are involved in a hit and run or an uninsured motorist ( I think up to 2 weeks). If I am dumb enough to get into an at-fault accident, I deserve to pay for a rental car for a few days/weeks.

Unless you buy their SLI or supplemental liability insurance.

sorry, wasn't trying to be an idiot. The rental car places have many confusing insurance options.

I go with AMEX premium insurance and SLI (if business rental) no SLI (personal rentals.)

why did u give a negative rating ?? to my message

arjung said: why did u give a negative rating ?? to my messageIt could be because you said, "it is a good idea to take insurance that covers your rental car," and you imply that one should insure cars when renting them, but

1) the question is not about insurance on rental cars, and;

2) paying exorbitant rental car company rates is generally a bad idea.

Verify the amount total and per day the insurance company will pay. My sister thought she had it, but when she hit a dear, the AARP insurance company would only pay $20.00 per day for a limited number of days.

Progressive was the other guys insurance. They paid for our rental car ... easy to figure out there guy was at fault .. wife was stopped at a red light and was struck from behind.

So, even if you get it ... you might not need it depending on the situation.

why are you wasting money on insurance when many visa and MC business credit cards offer PRIMARY CDW for FREE??
