In past years, various institutions have offered free versions of TurboTax, both online and downloadable. Ones that I remember are State Farm, Fidelity and Vanguard. Vanguard has already announced they will offer TurboTax, online and downloadable versions, free to their investors with Flagship status:

Vanguard TurboTax

I propose we gather all free TurboTax offerings into one thread for easy reference:

Institution Online Downloadable Requirements
Vanguard Yes Yes Flagship status

1-23-10 revised title to reflect discussions of discount offers.

Don't know yet about this coming year, but in the past T. Rowe Price has offered free TurboTax to their "Personal Services" clients, both online and as a CD.

can't we just run the update on last year's version?

I got 30% off with Fidelity last year.

I pay $12.95 every year for state and federal with online TaxAct --- I hope I am not missing something

To get Vanguard Flagship status you need $1 million or more in Vanguard mutual funds.
I'll just hope State Farm offers this again this year.

State Farm doesn't usually announce it until mid-December, so hopefully it is still coming. I was going to send a secure E-mail from my account to ask, but I can't get to it for some reason.

Could this thread also include a reference to the rebate deals?

Also I have been a fidelity customer for ages. I never used their free tt. I am not sure if that is because they only offer online version or the basic version.

Last year State Farm changed their free TurboTax qualification - used to be you just had to have an account there (like insurance) --- last year you had to have a bank or investment account to get it free.

I got 25% off with US Bank in 2008.

you can also buy on craigslist or eBay after jan-feb timeframe when you can get TT premier for $20 or so. I did this once and was able to do free fed e-file and had to pay for state efile (or print and mail it out).

Many people qualify for free e-filing and the online version through www.statetaxfreedom.com . This one gives free state and federal if you qualify and is better than the federal only edition.

I just checked Fidelity, T Rowe Price and Stat Farm websites to see if they mention TurboTax yet.

I could only find on Fidelity:
"Do Your Taxes With TurboTax and Receive a Discount

* Coming Soon!"

Fidelity

When anyone finds anything more definitive, I'll start the Quick Summary.

I ended up paying something like $170 last year with TurboTax... WITH the 30% Fidelity discount.

Is there any advantage with TurboTax over Taxact for a sole prop?

I got my 2008 TT from eBay as well, but it was not genuine. I was real apprehensive about efiling with it, not knowing whether it was hacked and will also efile to someone's email address as well as IRS.
If you go this route, check product against TT's web page idscussing genuine product verification, i.e. hologram on cd hub, printed artwork quality, ... Report illegal copies and get your money back.
Happy hunting.

Fidelity has 25% off the downloadable versions of TurboTax this year. TT Deluxe with Federal E-File and State is $44.96, for example.

Discount applies to the online use of the product also.

Why do they charge more than 2x as much for the online version? The only advantage I guess is that they archive your returns.

15% discount from Penfed.

State Farm has free Turbo Tax available now. There is a banner link after you login, if you have at least one banking product. Basic and Deluxe online versions are free.

If you want the actual program to download, the Basic version is available for free (click the Downloads link at the top). The Deluxe version is only $20 though. Last year both were free.

+1

Currently it says (looks like a price increase for 2009 returns):
Free edition: Fed free, State 14.95
Deluxe edition: Fed $7.95; plus $10 more for state

One hazard with a free on line State farm is that at some point they eliminate the record. I was slow filing on year and after doing a vast amount of work, the on line record disappeared. Would have been well worth having bought it.

The State Farm deal of $20 for the Deluxe version is not too bad, since you get a free state product included. I don't trust the online versions. Too bad its not free like last year.

Weird, I just got a mailer from Intuit with a free TurboTax for Business CD with free federal e-file at my business address. I wonder if that's to go along with the free copy of QuickBooks Pro 2009 that I got at Staples at the end of 2008?

How slow were you? Were you past the filing deadline? Did you file for an extension? (if yes, did you do it through Web TurboTax?)

I've been using it for several years, and like it a lot. I especially like that I don't need to install anything on my computer (hate installing complex software that has very limited useful life) and don't need to migrate any data when I replace my PC.

I just logged in and saw the same thing. How can you use the Deluxe version and NOT download? Can you fill it out online?

Edit: Sorry, didn't see the previous post - that answers my question.

With state farm, it looks like it's $20 for Deluxe, and you have to pay for a state Efile too...at that point, TaxAct is probably a little cheaper. Good deal for simple returns, though.

The State Farm download version has free fed e-file

$59.95 $20.00
Federal and State
Federal efile included

Geico also is offering the free basic federal with efile. ~$22 for deluxe (not including state).

What is the difference between Basic and Deluxe edition? Does Basic edition has form 1040?

As I remember it I was passed the filing deadline and did not file for an extension. Due to very large Katrina flood losses I knew they owed me money (when means no penalties) and the trying to do that part delayed me. Once all the records vanished I was dealyed even more though.

It would be useful to know exactly how to find the Geico deal (I did not see it on their web site). I have a policy with them and had kept $100 on deposit with State Farm Bank in order to get the free TurboTax download (the value of which was a respectable interest rate), and if Geico gives the same thing, perhaps I should take my money out.

Geico Turbo Tax Offer

(Sorry ... was in a hurry when I posted before and meant to come back and add the link.)

Same here... I filed about a week before deadline, and when I went to check out, bam from what I remember >$200. So before clicking "process", I called up an agent, told them my issue: I started filling out my taxes through link that was FREE Fed and $20 State. I even provided link (which was no longer even working). Agent on phone said to go ahead and checkout, pay, and we'll reimburse you. Needless to say, I got the operator to send me an email with this so I had confirmation. ~Two weeks later, after I still hadn't had the reimbursement, I called them up and they had no idea what I was talking about. No to belabor this story... it ~2 months to get reimbursement and a lot of noise So I'm skeptical this year. We'll see.

They're doing it again this year. TurboTax Deluxe online and download are free for T. Rowe Price "Personal Sevices" clients (i.e. you have lots of money in your TRP accounts).

Is $20 for the download version of TurboTax Deluxe a good deal? I can get it thru State Farm since I'm a banking customer with them, and I'm only interested in the download version so I have the software on my own PC. Not sure what kind of deals there are usually for TurboTax Deluxe. I think Costco will have a coupon for it later (they seem to have one every year), but can't recall how much the price was after coupon.

How do you get the software? Do they send you an email? Provide you with a link when you log into your account?

Skipping 87 Messages...

I just talked to State Farm Bank and learned that their free TurboTax offers expires April 15. This means that if you have started a return with them, you will have to either start a new return or pay Intuit to continue your work unless you can finish the job by April 15.

No where on their site do they mention this. The representative I talked to said a notice to this effect had just come down.

I mentioned earlier in this thread the problems I had when I started a return with them, was hit by Katrina complexities and did not file on time, and then could not retrieve the return, something that cost me vast aggravation and very large amounts of time.

I view this as rather tricky marketing by Intuit and probably State Farm. I had opened an account with State Farm and kept it just for this benefit, which I now learn is not one, since I will probably lose some work.

Those with any data in the system may want to figure out what to do. If you do not want to just pay Intuit you may be able to print out return so you at least have the work done and in your files.
