Thank you for the post. I have donated blood a few times as I decided last year that is was one way I could help others. Donating blood truly does save lives as my wife has to receive 3 units after an emergency surgery.
Please all go and donate blood and continue to do so every when ever possible. Here in Utah you do get all the free bottles of water, juices and bags of snack treats you can eat before, during and after donating.
saseboy said: Why give your blood for free, when they turn around and sell it to the patients???
Because some day you or someone you love may need that blood. Hospitals may sell it to the patients, as they should since they are in business to be profittable, but I doubt any will refuse to pay when it will save their life.
Keep in mind that you blood, once donated, has to be tested to ensure it is safe to give to others. This is all done by the Red Cross. They sell the blood to hospitals at no profit as they are a non profit organization. Staff has to be paid to take your blood, test it, etc.. That staff is paid and this blood cost money.
Keep in mind that all things in live required labor to produce, ship, sell, etc.. We all pay for that labor when we buy that product.

There is a lOT of profit in non profits, check out their salaries. Though I give blood, I should be financially compensated for it, its an hour+ of time plus cost of travel. I think $20-25 is reasonable.
I guess in the end, charity is not something we all have. My feeling is that I don't need to be compensated for all that I do. Sometimes a feeling good about myself and providing a service to my fellow man is all I need. They could pay you for the blood, it would only add to the cost at the hospital and raise the cost of healthcare.
I will take the good feeling and hope that it helps someone in the end.
Thanks for the input on salaries, but that does not affect my decision.
Want to watch movies in theaters for free? Want to help those in need? Well, you're in luck: those who donate blood in northern California during February "could be eligible for to win free movie tickets for one year, according to the American Red Cross." Four weekly drawings will be held, winners will receive 12 pairs of movie tickets.
Blood donors must be at least 17-years-old, weigh at least 110 pounds based on height and be in generally good health," reports BCN (via SF Appeal). "Donors that are 16-years-old may participate if granted parental permission."

Cascade Regional Blood Services - FREE PINT OF BEER - ONGOING STATE OF WASHINGTON
ABOUT Give Blood Get Beer is a theme for a series of blood drives conducted by Cascade Regional Blood Services that enables local restaurants and pubs to support our community in a unique and fun way. CRBS brings a bloodmobile to the sponsoring business for a Pint-for-Pint blood drive around lunch time or early afternoon. All registered donors receive a prepaid coupon for a pint of beer that can be redeemed beginning the day following the drive.
HOW IT BEGAN Cascade Regional Blood Services started Give Blood Get Beer with a Pint-for-Pint Blood Drive in September 2008 at The Swiss in Tacoma. Because The Swiss Pub was already supporting the community in a variety of ways, they were a great initial partner to help us promote the fact that blood donations are always needed. The calendar quickly filled that first year, with five other establishments booking Pint-for-Pint Blood Drives. Drives were spaced every 56 days to give donors the opportunity to donate the maximum number of times allowed.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE GOING TO A PINT-FOR-PINT BLOOD DRIVE ================================================================ MAKE AN APPOINTMENT: You may make an appointment by calling 1-877-24-BLOOD. Walk-ins are always welcome.
PREPARE: Before donating blood, be sure to eat well and drink plenty of non-caffeinated beverages.
AT THE DRIVE: The bloodmobile will be parked in front of, or near the sponsor’s location. When they register to donate, donors will receive their pre-paid coupon that can be redeemed for a pint of beer at the sponsor’s location beginning the following day.
REDEEMING YOUR COUPON: YOU MUST BE AGE 21 OR OLDER W/ PHOTO ID TO REDEEM COUPON, NO EXCEPTIONS! - As always, CRBS recommends abstaining from caffeine, alcohol or tobacco prior to donating, and at least 4-6 hours after donating. The pre-paid coupon is redeemable beginning the following day. The expiration date is set by the drive sponsor.
SCHEDULE YOUR NEXT APPOINTMENT FOR ANOTHER PINT-FOR-PINT BLOOD DRIVE: Be sure to schedule your appointment for the next blood drive! When donors register for their third Pint-for-Pint Blood Drive, they will receive their promotional Give Blood Give Beer t-shirt.

Defending the Caveman is a play that explores the relationship between men and women, and how we really haven’t changed that much since the days of the caveman. The show is set in a Flintstones-style living room, complete with stone table and television, where the actor Kevin Burke ponders the differences between men and women. In essence, he says, “Men are hunters and women are gatherers. Men are more singularly focused on tasks, while women imagine and arrange things in life, collections details and talking about their feelings.”

While supplies last, presenting donors will receive a free long-sleeve Red Cross T-shirt. From Feb. 10-14, all donors will also receive a candy treat for Valentine’s Day. There will also be Valentine’s Day “In Honor Of” cards to let the recipient know that the donor gave the gift of life.
The need for blood donations is constant. Blood is perishable and has no substitute. Red blood cells have a shelf life of only 42 days and platelets just 5 days, the Red Cross said.
All blood types are needed, especially type O negative. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate.
To make an appointment to give blood or platelets, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

AMERICAN RED CROSS - CEDAR POINT FREE ADMISSION TICKET OFFER ============================================================ During the summer “trauma season,” it is exceptionally difficult to connect with people who have busy summer schedules and are less likely to donate. Cedar Point has stepped up during this period to help give a little extra incentive to potential donors. By providing free entry pass and coupon booklet on entry to the theme park, Cedar Point allows us to offer a fun thank you gift at select blood drives for those who make the time to give blood in the summer. These incentives also help us connect with a key audience, young blood donors, who we usually lose during the summer months while schools are not in session. Cedar Point has not only assisted the Central Ohio Region, but the entire Ohio-Michigan Division, by providing these thank you gifts to those who donate blood at select blood drives. Their support as a community partner has helped us be prepared for the summer trauma season with a strong blood supply.
