Taste The Waste Film/ Q&A Thursday, February 2nd 2012, 7:00 p.m. Dir.: Valentin Thurn, Germany 2011, 88 min., German with English subtitles A documentary about the worldwide destruction of food Why do we throw away so much? And how can we stop this kind of waste?
More than half of our food goes to waste. Most of it is already lost on its way from the field to the store before it ever even arrives on our tables. Every other lettuce, every other potato and one out of 5 loafs of bread. The system reaches around the world. Everything needs to be available at all times, supermarkets offer the full range of products year round.
In addition everything needs to look perfect. One sagging leaf of lettuce, one cut in a potato, one dent in an apple is reason enough to reject the product. As scary and horrifying this film is, it also shows that people’s mindsets are changing and all around the world movements are under way to find alternatives to this insane wastefulness.
Discussion with director Valentin Thurn and reception after the screening.

“Justice League: Doom” will make its West Coast premiere on Feb. 16 with a Hero Complex screening at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills with a limited number of free tickets available for fans. Hero Complex lead writer Geoff Boucher will moderate a Q&A with the filmmakers and members of the cast after the screening. “Justice League: Doom,” the latest DC Universe animated original movie from Warner Home Video, takes its core plot from Mark Waid’s memorable “Tower of Babel” story arc (which was published back in 2000 in the pages of DC Comics) although there are considerable differences. In both the comics and film, the world’s greatest heroes are all placed in danger when villains get their hands on Batman’s secret files — which indexes the weaknesses of all his teammates and precise tactical plans for taking them down.
