Possibly this is old news but certain libraries have signed up with Freegal and if your library did, you can sign in with your card number and download 3 (Sony/BMG)mp3 files per week

This is awesome, a friend showed me this a while ago. I bet a lot of people will benefit from this post.

That's pretty cool...usually I'm the first one to know about stuff like that but I've never heard of it. It's unfortunate that it's Sony, though. Sony has a history of hating their customers (that DRM rootkit was only one of multiple examples) so I never recommend doing business with them.

Don't forget that if you're willing to visit the actual library you can borrow CDs and rip them yourself, and that's not limited to Sony/BMG...and it's not even limited to what your library has, most can pull stuff in from other libraries.

It pays to explore websites of your library and its affiliated libraries. You might find auto repair manual services from ChiltonLibrary or EBSCOHost Auto Repair Reference Center. You will usually find ebooks and audiobook downloads. You might find online access to magazines, foreign language lessons, or a million other services.

Clifton NJ library has itText

I just moved to Camarillo, CA, and found out their library offers Freegal!
