kiddykid said: is this real? Probably is, I've also seen ads for free land in other states over the years. Sometimes the catch is it's in the middle of nowhere and no one wants it (for good reason) but if they give it to you then they have someone to charge property taxes too. In this case it looks like a genuine case of some rural areas in Kansas trying to promote their towns and get more people to move there. It does look like they expect you to plan to build a house on the property and move there though, so that's probably the "catch".

Last I heard all the old Minuteman sites have been destroyed/filled in. Some did get sold/given away and I've read stories of people who live in them and think they're just great. I suppose having a home that's also a near ultimate bomb shelter does have a few perks.

Government quit giving away free land years ago except for The State of Kansas. I'll stick with balmy breezes, swaying palm trees and hurricaines.
good one, OP. i heard about this months ago, but never thought to post it here.

Yea... I'm a native Kansan... Not native american, just a person native to Kansas. Anyway, I heard about this a while ago on the news. The towns that is giving away the land are slowly turning into a ghost towns. They decided to do this to try to attract people to go live there. And about the tornados, Bah, in the time I have lived here (21 years) the only way i have been even remotely effected by a tornado, was a house that my aunt and uncle moved out of was hit 2 years after they moved out. If you move to kansas... the tornados wont kill you... but the boredom will...

I have also read lately that there is free land in North Dakota as well as Montana with similar stipulations. I think there was a story on www.money.com last week.
I think the fed's are still giving away land in Alaska, however this land is very secluded and has more rigid stipulations involved.

I live in Kansas and I have visited/drove by all of these places at one point or the other... they are all pretty communities with antique shops and bed&breakfasts... great land if you want to drive an hour to find a grocery store.

I have lived here the last 21 years of my life as well... and its not as bad you think... as long as you don't to any of the afore mentioned communities.

not the ultimate freebie as many other states have this as well but there are stringent guidelines. still good to make people aware though
I would be there in a second if KS had the same weather as CA where I live now.

Those places aren't that far from civilization. I think most people commut that far back and forth to work each day in other states. I live in Salina and a lot of people come here from those places on the weekends to shop and eat. I think Salina has a pull factor of 1.5. They mostly want families with kids to boost the money per pupil so they don't have to consolidate school districts. Consolidation is a bad word in Kansas. If you knew how many school districts they have in the state for the number of kids you'd be amazed. Anyway Salina will be in the news for the up coming Virgin GlobalFlyer take off and landing. Here is a link to the websites for more info if you are interested:

It's not free land, they are just letting you build a house in their subdivision. You are not getting title to it, so anything you build on that land will not belong to you either. Right?
sounds like a good idea for those who live in the inland empire of So Calif. Most commute to LA or OC and have an hour or more drive to work on crowded freeways. At least in KS, they would have a nice interstate.
in the end, she clicked her heels and returned home. There's no place like home

I think it was last year that I heard on the news (KRON)that you can buy a lot for 1 penny in some remote areas in one of these states ( and of course you'll have to build and move in within a year or so). I think that would be the better deal since you will buy the land and get the title...I think that's still going on, but I can't remember what state....
will they welcome Habitat for Humanity to build housing for the poor there?
Free? probably not! they are figuring on getting money out of you somehow in form of taxes...and increase the short term building trade employment.
I long dream of living off the land, but you'd have to have ample drinking water...a friend of mine realized his dream of homestead by buying land not far from Orlando; warm climate and lots of rain in the summer. who would have thought of living off the land in the land of retirees

I can't understand why on earth someone would want to move way WAY away from everything, then live on a fraction of an acre. If I'm gonna get away from it all, I want 50 acres minimum.
Yeah, I agree, I already live on a lot like that in California. The weather is great, I have a nice gardener to take care of the yard, and I am close to all kinds of shopping. If I am gonna move to the middle of nowhere, at least give me title to a few acres of land so it makes some sense. I mean, you certainly can't expect that property values are gonna increase much if they are resorting to things like this to attract people!
Wow, check out the business directory....the only two things with a national name attached to them are a Radio Shack and a Pizza Hut! It would be nice to live somewhere without all the sprawl, but there is NOTHING anywhere near any of these towns!
Sound like one of those weird towns in the horror movies...
Heloooo...haa...Youuu rich city folks...welcome to our town...heeeeee..haaa...we ain't got no nothing in here, but we ain't no serial killers...come over wheneveeeeeer you need help...specially a little pretty thing like your wife...heeeeeeeee..haaa...

I just heard about this and I visit the website. They have a total of 7 counties giving land and some give a house too. I visit 3 or 4 links and some counties gives you 10 years of no tax property. Something to think about.... Probably a nice place to retire... BTW they have airports...

Without shopping centers nearby, you're pretty much SOL on many of the hot deals posted here. I'm not driving 100 miles to go to a Staples.
