Popular Mechanics Review

I do have to agree with them where they said they're slow to warm up. The color is good but they definitely take a little bit to get to full strength. In my living room and kitchen I can only replace every other because it's too dim when you first turn it on with all CFL's.

That being said, a free bulb is a free bulb. Sweet!

Might be useful in places which you may visit during the middle of the night (e.g. hallway, bathroom)...as they won't blind you right away.

When they're turned on for the first time, they do start rather dim. But I've noticed that goes away after a
couple days. Maybe they need that time to "break in"? The ones I use are the same n:vision brand.

kenmarks said:Funny, I just bought and installed 45 of these in my home in the last 2 days. I bought this brand from Home Depot and tried them out first before going hog wild. Color is acceptable and buzzing is minimal (less than any other I have tried). Warm up is slow, but OK. I am waiting for 8 more of a particular type to be shipped to complete my project.
They have some good markdowns on these right now. 4 100watt equivalents are $5 plus some change.

Wow! Major green for you! If only the rest of the world would follow and make even the smallest changes, we can leave a better earth for our kids!

Thanks for bringing this point up! The EPA has addressed this issue. Please see here: Link for facts and disposal tips!

Just came back from my HD. The CS counter girl had no clue, so I just walked to the cash registers figuring that if it's free giveaway, it'd likely be there. So low and behold, there was. A old granny was guarding 2 whole cartoons of them and no, she told me, you don't need to buy anything to get a free one. She handed me one and then took down my name and zip code just for her record. No ID needed. The single-pack bulb had "for promotional use only" printed across bar code and was retailed at $5.97 in their ad, but we all know what kind of mark-up HD usually has.

Is Lowes not doing anything similar for Earth day?

How many watts is the bulb?

Well of course no one had any idea about the promotion despite having a big HD ad with them. There was a bunch of people wondering where the bulbs were. Finally they just told us to pick one up on the shelf of CFLs and then they didn't scan it on the way out... This is why I normally don't go to Home Depot.

Again what wattage is it?

Great bulb! Thanks

The bulb I got was a 60 watt equivalent.

Thanks.

HD sucks!
As I expected the Home Depot in Yonkers NY had no clue about any of this while I was there today. None of the sales associates nor the [dis]service desk knew anything. WTF!

When I got home I called them and after being transferred around the store to various departments (millworking was my favorite) the service rep came back on the phone and said she was told it's only on the internet and not in the store (like that would make any sense). These people are professional idiots!

I agree with alot of people, I hate the store and will go out of my way to shop elsewhere....

*Wasn't there a web site/blog that HD had and people blasted them and finally the new owner of HD read all the posts and said "We/I hear you and things will change"....where is this web site as I'd like to make use of it.

*Update: I called the HD 800 customer service line and gave them a piece of my mind...the rep said from what she heard a lot of stores were to start their give-out of bulbs at 1PM today (Sunday). That's all fine and dandy but store personnel should know this instead of playing dumb and/or stating flat out wrong information.

OK, I got one (name and zip code at checkout line) about 100 on hand, Of course, it is 60 watts. Hope I can return for a 100 Watt CFL and pay the difference next week, because 60 W is not enough for reading.

BTW, very few customers seemed to know about the giveaway or even ask for one when they saw the table, i.e. no lines.

I just got back from a HD in St Louis and did not see where they were giving these out. After walking around the store for a few minutes, I was ready to leave and walked by the customer service desk and no customers were there. Just as I was walking up to ask the csr, she asked me if I wanted a free light bulb. She must be a mind reader.

These things are rated as hazardous waste in California. Must be taken care of as such. I wish they wouldn't call them green. I guess it's a matter of perspective.

got 1 in front the store entrance. sign your name to support the use etc and thats it. lots more bulb available stacks of it

My Girlfriend and I have a total of 6 lamps in our apt. We went to 3 HD's and got 6 bulbs! - By the way if you look at these bulbs on the shelf - they have a 9 year warrnty and are designed to last that long!!! (Tripled Up Thanks to OP)

It is an admirable gesture for Home Depot to give these away. I just hope that people don't think that all CFLs are dim because these are only 60 watt equivalent bulbs. For practical use I used mostly 100 watt and some 75 watt equivalents. The only 60's I used are for 2 reading lamps in a room with four 100-120 watt equivalent bulbs and for bathroom lights in a strip of four 60watt equivalent globes. My dining room ended up with 5 40 watt equivalents.
Take a look at the package of 4 100 watt equivalent bulbs. They are on sale for $5.97 (at least at my local HD) making them a very good value.

With regards to the comments about how "green" can a product be that contains mercury... The energy savings and the replacement lightbulbs and packaging that these save over their 7 to 9 year guaranteed life span (save that receipt) far outweight the negatives. Just dispose of them properly when you are done with them.
