http://www.free411.com said: The name says it all. 1-800-FREE411 is free nationwide directory assistance. And it’s free from any phone. Cell. Home. Work. Wherever. Of course, you may get charged minutes on your cell phone (like most calls), but we won’t charge you a penny. Here’s how we do it. Our sponsors cover the service cost by playing short advertising messages (about 15 seconds) – ads usually based on your search request. Say you’re looking for a local pizza place. We might play you a special offer from Dominos. And we’ll even connect you for free. Of course, you can always just get the original number you requested. Best part is, a typical call to us lasts about the same amount of time as a paid 411 call.
Thanks..my phone co. charges me $1.50 per 411 call.

Another free 411 service without any advertising messages (as of now) is Google's GOOG411. Just call 1-800-GOOG-411.

+1 to OP and arunfat. I have tried both services, and they are both good. IMHO, Google calls generally will take fewer minutes than free411 calls. But both services are better than the ridiculously over-priced cellular service networks 411..

I've used this before and it's very handy. I usually don't mind the ads (although I am going to try google 411). They also have a pretty funny ad on You Tube.

Told my daughter about 800free411 and here's her response to me:
I have this on my phone, but now they charge to talk to a live person – have to set up an acct. Most times, the computer generated person doesn’t understand what you’re saying.
So I gave her the google number to try. Thanks for all the information.
411 goog is awesome been using it for several months now. yes the 411 free can get annoying and their voice recognition doesnt always get the right name/ place you are trying to find.
