Must pick up by Sat? Usually, they allow the freebies to be picked up whenever and it only matters when you order it... The offer sent via email is a little confusing Quote: "Order & Pick Up This Thursday, Friday or Saturday" I just called our local Walgreen's and the Photo Dept. said they could be picked up at a later date without charge. |

I picked it up Friday evening. Pictures came out beautiful. My sons were thrilled, they each took a 5x7 for their rooms of the 3 of us, I got one for my purse album and nice 8x10 for my living room wall. Well worth it! Will be keeping a closer eye on Walgreens emails for specials like this. I usually don't read them lol Thanks again OP |

What a jerks. The wife went to pick up my order and the lady complemented that the photo looks very nice and asked if it was taken at home or at a portrait, and she innocently told the truth that it was a portrait. Immediately the lady changed her tone and told her that she won't be able to give the order because they are not allowed to print scanned portraits as this will result in a loss of income for the company that did the portraits. After a bit of arguing, she agreed to give the order but demanded to make a payment. The wife didn't give up and finally got the order, but she must have had to spend a lot of time. I would never use their photo service again. I was in fact thinking of switching over from riteaid to walgreens for prescriptions, as I find people at riteaid extremely inefficient (by experience from 3 different stores), but now I am wary of doing this as I wonder if their pharmacy will also be full of crooks. |

That is true for all places. I've had this experience also at WalMart. Never say that it's a scanned image of a portrait. |

Most places do this, or are at least supposed to, as the picture copyright is technically owned by the studio/photographer that took the picture. No difference than a copyrighted movie being owned by the studio. Most places realize that they have started to lose business to scanners, so they now offer a CD with all the pictures which includes a copyright release form allowing you to make your own pictures. But instead of paying about 12-15 bucks for a 5x7 you pay about 100 bucks for the cd. It makes sense if they took alot of pictures that you really like, but that release then allows you to go make all the copies you want at places like this. Back on topic, thanks to the OP, got a great set of prints. |

You can't fault Walgreen's for upholding this copyright policy. It's the law. Just like you can't scan a picture of some movie star and go in and get prints. When you upload the image, you have to check to say that you hold the rights to the photos. Walgreen's is not the crook--you guys who are stealing from your portrait photographers are the crooks! |

Ok agreed, walgreens is not at fault then, but this is new and very strange to me. What is the policy about scanning and printing at home? I would assume that is OK, as it is normally considered OK for ripping your own CDs to listen on your mp3 player. You guys seem to be knowledgeable so not to really question, but extending the previous concept, I am only printing copies at walgreens for my own self, not really to sell them, so wouldn't this be considered different from say, a model who gets her photo shot and later makes copies to create a calendar and sell them? PS: Thanks for correcting me. |

I am a model and I have worked with a lot of photographers, it varies by photographer how they handle it and what the agreement was. I might not be able to use certain pictures of myself for certain applications (example, the Hometown Hotties contest only wants pictures with no copyrights and no other people in them), whereas other pics I can use all I want. The rule is, if you use it, you have to have the copyrights to it, and that goes for the photographer too, if I shoot with someone and then find myself unexpectedly on a billboard without my permission, the photographer is liable. If you go to a photo place, they can only release your photos to you, they can't post them in their office unless you sign a form, just as you cannot use them for anything other than what was agreed to. |

PS: Thanks for correcting me. It is kind of like the cd issue. However, when you rip a cd to mp3, the mp3's are considered an inferior copy. If the prints you got from scanning and printing were an inferior copy, then it's getting closer to legal, however the copy is almost identical. The ripping/copying of music is something that you do by yourself and don't involve any 3rd party. Walgreens is providing a service similar to that of companies that convert home VHS videos to DVD's. They would never convert a VHS Blockbuster to DVD, the same as how Walgreens won't print a professional picture. As stated by the model, many times they don't have access to the photos they were in. Typically when someone models for a campaign, they will sign a release saying something to the effect of "In exchange for considerable compensation I release my images to photographer so and so." Pretty much letting the photographer do what they want with the pictures. Some sports go the opposite direction, and claim ownership to any pictures taken by any media. The PBR (Pro Bull Riding) claims ownership of your photos and forbid you using them for any reason unless they approve it first. The believe the PGA and WPGA have tried to implement similar policies. I only know this as I periodically do freelance photography and have been shocked at some of the conditions companies put in their media credential request forms. |
